Such important advice for those "in the back". You never know and ya gotta be ready. Dancers that "are ready" are some of the most valuable in any company. Such a great post Katie!

Gotta wonder; do you think Peter was testing you to see if you really wanted to play Juliet bad enough? Maybe this is his technique for determining how much effort a ballet dancer will put in performing the role. 🤔

Yes! Katie your hair looks so pretty in this video I hope you are doing well. Also would you ever consider dancing with the New York City ballet again and if you could what ballet would it be? And what are some of the ballets you have always wanted to perform but never have?

Peter Martins has always been one of my favorites ever to do ballet. Everyone who knows ballet--has ever been any kind of fan--considers him one of the best ever to have anything to do with the sport at all. But many of those same praisers were unkind when he took over for George Balanchine--his company and his school. They were especially not happy to see his choreographies. People can be purists. It didn't matter who took over at the New York City Ballet. All people are going to say is (or rather, whine), "It's just not the same..." I wish he had danced longer... and I wish more would have accepted his attempts at choreography... and his rule in ballet overall... Still, to Kathryn Morgan... thanks for making sure Peter is not forgotten... and respected for what he has done...

I was in NYC at the beginning of March and had the honor of seeing NYCB’s Jerome Robbins show at the last performance. It was one of the best dance performances I’ve ever seen, and I was so happy to finally be able to see live the company you’ve taught me so much about. I love hearing the behinds of the scenes like this, please keep them coming!

Hi , Katie I am a professional ballet dancer and I have experienced every single word you have said about being in rehearsal and learning “in the back ". Sorry for my English I am Italian... My problem is that when the director asks me to show him the choreography I get so nervous and often I forget the steps or I do them really bad. I ended up crying for not being able to show that I actually knew it perfectly. After it’s hard of course to get the role and easier to get fired too... do you have any advice on how to be confident in those situations and how to calm down ? Thank you ! 😊

Question from a non-dancer...how do you learn the dances by standing in the back? Do you do the steps along with the others or do you really just stand and watch and maybe take notes? Do you then have to practice on your own time? How do you get used to the partnering or build the endurance to get through the whole performance?

Katie, I just have to leave you an encouraging comment. I was drawn to your channel when you were making videos about your health crisis. I am 57 and over the past 15 years I have been diagnosed with a life threatening autoimmune disease that requires me to take steroids daily. I suffered with you as you dealt with your weight gain.... I know exactly how you felt. I also relate to you as because of health issues, I had to retire very early from my career as a professional violinist, teacher, coach, judge etc. As I am not on social media as much as most, I lost track of your channel and have just watched your video about your divorce. My heart just aches for you... but I believe that everything happens to us for a reason. And, you have shown us all that you have become the person you were always supposed to be. Stay strong and know that your story at this point will affect so many people in a positive way. Your work ethic, positive attitude, ability to know when you need self care, and your ablilty to prioritize your life. Just think of how many people will be inspired and possibly comforted by your story that you are willing to share.

Hey, Katie, so glad your back! I had a question I'd love your input on: I help teach the younger classes at my studio, and one of my students is really talented and I think she could definitely go professional. She's 11 years old and has a great work ethic and she takes and applies corrections really well. Do you know what I can do to encourage her talent? I've spoken to her and her mother and she says that she'd love to pursue a career dancing professionally. Just hoping you have some advice for me to help foster her talent (short of offering more classes, the options at our studio are kind of limited) Thank you so much for everything you do; you've been my biggest inspiration for my dancing and thank to you I was accepted to USC's Summer Dance Program!!!! Ilysm!! (Sorry this is so long, lol)

You should focus on all your students, not just on one who you think might make it to be a professional. Someone who may not be as good, but still wants a career, should not be focused on any less. It seems as if you're comparing students to each other. It's good that she's good and really likes ballet and would like to pursue a career doesn't mean you should focus on others any less. "One of my students is really talented..." You see how that sounds kind of like you think she's the only good one in you're class? No hate intended.
@kathryn_morgan
@kathryn_morgan 5 жыл бұрын
I definitely would encourage it but not in a pressure-filled way. She is still very young at 11, and a lot could change. If she was 13/14, I would say you should sit her down and tell her the potential she has etc. But at 11, still keep things light. I would start by encouraging her to look into summer program auditions. That way she can get a feeling for what's out there. If she enjoys that process and ends up going to one, then she can get the feel for the dancer life. I would start there and see what happens!

@@citizenofvelaris I love and care about all of those girls, but I dance at a recreational school, and most of the class wasn't even dancing before this fall, so you see how I might say one stands out more? I never brought it up in front of the other girls, and I treat all of the same in classes. But thank you for you input :)

Hi Katie, I have a video request (if you can't make it that's totally fine) Could you make a video on weight in the ballet world? Like how much is too little or too much, how to get thin, how to lose weight and look like a ballerina. I want to be a professional so badly, and I'm not overweight, (I'm 5'5" and 136 lbs) my goal is 120 lbs, and that is about the perfect weight for me. I've heard many opinions that 110 lbs is the ideal weight for a ballerina, but that weight is underweight for me. I could really use your help. Thank you so much I love your videos xX -Liz

Hey Kathryn! I’ve had an issue recently, two of my toenails fell off while I was practicing pointe at home. I’ve looked it up and I’ve figured that it’s because my shoes are too old and are most likely dead. For right now, I can’t buy a new pair and I’m too scared to practice in the old ones. I’m off dance class for almost two weeks for spring break and I really don’t want to lose the progress i’ve made on pointe, what are some exercises I can do to keep my feet and ankles strong?

Hi Katie! What year was this? Do you happen to remember the dates (ish) you played Juliet? I went to a NYCB production of R&J several years ago and I’m wondering if I saw you perform! I can’t find my program, but I still have the ticket and I remember noticing that the girl playing Juliet wasn’t a principal or soloist.

Just curious why you did not dance the Martins' version of Balcony pas de deux rather than MacMillan's in your recent video? It is the version I grew up with at the Royal Ballet, but I wonder how it is outside of London. Is it the best version, for you?

Great video as always! In 2015, my ballet school performed Don Quixote (act 2 or 3) and I was recently watching the recording, and the person doing the role Cupid was about my level a few years back. Although, I don't know if we are going to do it again, I am starting to learn the Cupid variation on my own. Have you ever danced Don Quixote?

I am in Junior Company at the dance school I go to. Senior Company auditions are coming up later this month, but I’m not sure if I’ll try. Me and my family are moving next month, and by the time we are moving by, -if I would make it- Senior Company classes wouldn’t have started yet. But it would also be a good experience. However, I don’t know if while moving, knowing I could’ve been in Senior Company if I could stay is something I want to know, if that makes any sense. Any advice?
