This plane took me several days to build and get ready. The battery placement is a real issue. I would recommend this plane as a gasser rather than a electric powered one. However she looks real good and flies ok. But in all fairness this video was done on a very windy day and I am NOT an experienced builder with ARFs. All the trims seemed neutral and the cg was perfect with a 3600 4s shoved as far forward as I can get her.
This plane would be better for someone well versed in ARF building and design.
To get this plane go here to BiGo Hobby where I purchased her: www.bitgohobby...

Just noticed your video (KZbin recommendations), and you seem to have had the same, less than desirable performance from this plane. I wanted her to do so much better, but she just didn't. Your crash landing was so close to mine, but my storch didn't have any damage inside...just my pride - LOL...but just wondering if you're taped wings helped... I left my wings "pinned" by the spar, but they still slipped back some and just made the plane fly weird. I want to try on a less aggressive pitched prop, but fear she'll just be too slow then to even fly. Too long of a build to just let her collect dust, and she is a looker, no doubt. Wonder if she's worth another 2-3 hours of salvage work. We spend something like 25 hours on ours...too long!

I agree I have built a bunch of ARFs before but never this much of a headache. I believe DW is the Dynam of balsa. The Tape on the wings was gorilla packing tape and yes it held them in place even with the crash so instead it shattered the wing spar and surrounding structure. But the wings were fine.....LOL . needless to say the planes servos , esc, and motor all now serve in other projects. The Storch has it's new address at the county landfill....lol. Next week I am getting the Dynam SU-26M Blue because I hate myself and love to have to keep the swear jar busy....lol FYI in my videos I keep telling you in my unboxing videos, "Oh look Brian Phillips the manual is not folded, now we are both happy" I hate folded manuals.!!!!!!!

Which is why at 77 years of age and just under 2 years into the hobby I'm afraid to fly paper and stick RC planes. [As a kid in the fifties I used to build paper [we called it Japanese tissue paper] and stick [balsa] rubberband planes over the course of several weeks and totally destroy them in minutes.]

Should be easy to fix, Hobby Lobby has a great selection of balsa and other modeling wood. You can cut and peel back the covering, do the repairs, pull the covering back. You can use a hairdryer to warm up the covering to loosen the glue. If you don't have any covering if you need it for the repairs, use blendem or scotch tape. Even paper tape will do and you can paint it, Jeff in LA USA

I think one of the biggest issues this plane has is that it calls for the smallest servos on the market, the control surfaces are large and it's easy for a plane this size to fly just fast enough o put the surfaces under compression so the tiny servos can't move them. I purchased an assembled DW Storch from the ceiling of the local Hobby Shop. first thing I noticed is that the wings will swivel back a bit so I'd advise the builders to install removable wing root bolts ahead of the wing spare. Mount your receiver high above the servo deck and run your antennas back into the rear of the fuselage, the servo deck is carbon fiber and that hinders reception for the receiver. Using long Y harnesses for the wing servos allows you to route the wires out of the way for installing the battery., speaking of which, the battery box is also the motor mount box, get it set into position and instead of using the screws and angle plates to hold it in place, epoxy it in place, that way it won't shift and the battery box will be clear of the two pieces of wood the screws anchored into. Now to the afore mentioned servos, install HS 85's for the tail control surfaces and HS 65's for the flaps & ailerons. HS 55's will work for the leading edge slats, but restrict the lift of the slats to 4mm, other wise they distort the air flow over the top of the wing leaving you with stall issues. You can flip the servo plates around on one wing so that they don't need separate channels, they can work off a Y harness no problem.

From watching your , and other flier's DW and even larger Storch models, it looks like they are too heavily wing-loaded for scale-like STOL slow takeoffs and landings like the full scale planes. The high aspect ratio skinny wings probably need differential ailerons on separate channels giving up but little or no down motion to get better lateral (yaw) stability. Maybe angling ailerons slightly up would also help lateral stability. The full scale Storch top speed was 110mph and they could land and take off like a butterfly in very small spaces.

Even thou I built a # of balsa kits in the 90's I find these balsa and wood ARF's present some challenges and take much longer to built than I anticipated. But, I have lots of stuff in my stash now and balsa does fly better so it makes sense to start building wood ARF's and the Flite Test foam board planes. Due to similar wind conditions here in East Central Fl as in AVON Fl way too high to be thinking of a maiden. I will fly planes I am familiar with in this wind like my Efilte Valiant and my FT simple stick.

Good luck on repair. When I saw this plane for the first time I love it, but it would be a pile of stick’s by now. A foam one about 1100mm would be nice scale to my WWII Warbirds. Maybe a bush plane about the same size for a gear mod👍🏻✌🏻🖖🏻Think about it😳

Well, had some wait time for another ARF to show up, a GP D.R1 for an electric conversion so I spent the time putting the fuse back together, learning some covering technique now all that's left to is untangle the spaghetti that used to be the landing gear. I removed the slats and servos from the wings, and I'm going to give this plane one more try. If successful I'm going to add fixed shaped slats to the wings off of a turbo timber I used to have. It will take two sets to be able to do both wings. @@FatGuyFliesRC

Doesn’t fly like a Storch at all, far to fast, the real plane was very much a STOL aircraft, slow and stable for observation roles, low stall speed could practically hover in a head wind. This one is flying far too fast, admittedly you didn’t have the leading edge slats, but even so it seemed over-powered, I wonder whether it would be better on 3S. The real design of the Storch is always going to make it a fragile model.
