Its even more tragic because they were killed on their 30th and final mission of their operational tour. Norman Jackson had already completed his 30th mission with another crew 2 days before but volunteered to go out on another op so his crew could all finish their tour together.

I April 2004, Jackson's Victoria Cross medal was sold at auction to Lord Ashcroft for £235,250 (GBP) against a pre-auction estimate of £130,000. His family were upset because the medal went to a private bidder rather than the RAF museum at Hendon. They had planned to give their father's medals to the museum, found they could not do so under the terms of their mother's will and the museum was outbid. His Victoria Cross is now on display in the Lord Aschroft Gallery at the Imperial War Museum, London.

Don't get me started, I used to organise Armed forces events in Devon up to 2018, then Covid and old age/ infirmity took it's toll on our association. We interviewed veterans post 1945 before they died or got dementia, displaying around 1500 personal photos. With captions or stories, plus sourced equipment featured, we put on an exhibition covering British, WW2,WW1 and Cold war era items and kit, we didn't cover too much conflict but the artefacts we have are really good. Upto 2500 school pupils attended our exhibitions, along with military personnel and 2-3000 members of the public. Our issues came from Remoaners and lefty liberal teachers, who quite frankly were proved to be disgusting creatures. Promoting war, baby killing and racism was often thrown at us

I went to school and later worked with one of Norman Jackson’s sons. He was justly proud of his dad’s bravery and the VC he was awarded. When Norman was first taken prisoner he was treated appallingly. Despite the injuries to his hands Norman played a mean round of golf. One in several million.

Because of him, the majority of the crew managed to survive. It is unfortunate that the pilot and tail gunner didnt make it, but at least they rest easy knowing they did everything in their power to save the stricken bird. These stories, from both sides of the war, really bring the human aspect to it. It's not just "3 bombers were downed", you guys tell us about the MEN inside them. That is really admirable. In 1941, New Zealander Flght Sgt James Ward of 75(NZ) squadron did much the same thing in a Wellington Bomber over Germany. He did not have a fire extinguisher, just a canvas, which he used to manually smother the flames by depriving them of oxygen and airflow by filling/covering the damage hole with canvas. He was awarded the VC. He saved his aircraft and his crew and also was awarded the VC, only to be KIA about 4 or 5 months later.

My Father was a bomb aimer serving in 467 SQN RAAF flying Lancasters. He and his crew were shot down over France 2 months after the date of this story. He evaded capture and made it home.

Frederick Manuel Mifflin was a Canadian born in Newfoundland. He was 21 years old. For a long time he felt uncomfortable in the RAF, in a foreign country. Every mission was a monstrous stress. He was even briefly suspended from flying to deal with the strain. He found friends and support from the members of his crew to whom he was deeply attached. The race with the Germans in radar technology made night bombing either relatively safe or completely suicidal. Unlike the Americans who fought in daylight, the Lancasters could not help each other. Each was on his own and could only hear on the radio the cries of comrades dying in the darkness.

A truly amazing story of bravery. It’s similar to the RAF Bomber Command VC received by Flt Sgt John Hannah, a Glaswegian, in 1940. My own father was also from Glasgow and in Bomber Command. He had the same surname and was frequently embarrassed when people thought he was the recipient of the V.C.! My father flew Wellingtons, Blenheims and other aircraft, but he was eventually shot down in an Avro Manchester while returning from laying mines in Kiel Canal. Two crewmen were killed and two others badly injured.

Pathfinders. Airborne troops that would go in very small teams to get recon on drop sites and bomb sites. Super deadly job. Most died. Pathfinders were some of the first “Special Operation Forces”.

This KZbin Video is completely erroneous. The Official Report was that during his attempt to reach the fire between the two engines he LOST the fire extinguisher he had tucked into his vest, therefore he was unable to extinguish the wing fire and due to burnt hands and further gunshot wounds received, he was swept off the wing and parachuted to the ground where he was captured by the Germans and remained in a hospital bed for 10 months before being interred in a German POW Camp. Upon allied liberation at the end of the war, he received the Victoria Cross Medal for his self sacrifice and gallant attempt of extinguishing the fire. The witnesses to his action ( other crew members ) who had witnessed his actions resulting in the awarding of his VC in late 1945. Incidentally the Liberator crashed and both the Tail Gunner and Pilot died in the crash. KZbin sadly just had to embellish his story by saying he EXTINGUISHED the wing fire. SHAME ON KZbin ! ... I remember having the Hamlyn book of True Adventures back in the 1970s which included the story of a Wellington bomber that had been hit and the wing was burning. One of the crew, I think attached to a rope, as he couldn’t fit through the aero hatch with a parachute, crept out onto the wing and had to use a rag to plug the fuel line to stop the fire as the extinguisher was ineffective. They managed to land the Wellington back in England. Unfortunately the tail gunner had also been killed. Incredible courage to all involved.
