When I was kid (and yes I’m aging myself) lol it was towards the end of decent train food service early to mid 70s I think. I used to really look forward to traveling by train back then
@Emeraldwitch30Ай бұрын
@georgedavis946 the only decent food on trains now is going on the big cross country ones like from Chicago to Seattle. My in-law often went on that one to visit family in Washington state. I think it goes through the mountains and they slept on it. Or if you go to Michigan there are a couple mystery/ fall color tour ones with a meal but you're really not going anywhere. The US is so huge it was car centric from the beginning of the auto industry lol But I do like train travel. We often took the train from Grand Rapids to Chicago when I was young and into traveling but you almost couldn't afford to eat on it and it was meh food. I just packed lunches

No food, no toilet, no personnel, sometimes no shelter or anywhere to sit, unreliable trains, no AC, constantly rising prices and convoluted pricing system... "B- b- but why aren't people taking the train??? "

is this America???? that sounds bonkers . in the UK there is food on some trains but always food on station platforms, toilets, AC, shelter, staff if they can walk down train. cuts have made them very busy and undedstaffed recently but they're maintained well and run okay 80% of the time (in the north) @@GerardMenvussa

Bentos really are just one of those things that I'm consistently jealous of as an American. Our on the go options are usually just variations of Meat, Cheese, Bread, and maybe Egg or Potatoes. Seeing boxes full of lots of different items, commonly sold and in such variety, just makes me so envious.
@zombiegoddess1524Ай бұрын
Idk where you live but we have bento boxes in Cleveland, ohio and lots of other states. Also they are not expensive to make. I don't know your situation so i say this with respect.
@MrYfrank14Ай бұрын
I live in Connecticut, and I never saw them. Do you live in an area with a lot of Japanese immigrants? The stores may stock them just because there is a demand in that area.
@MrYfrank14Ай бұрын
The thing I am really jealous of is the self heating meals. Just pull a string. Closest we get in the US are Army MRE heaters that you have to add water to.
@ohnosmoarlulcatzАй бұрын
@@MrYfrank14 From what I see, it depends. I live in an area with a lot of Chinese and Vietnamese immigrants and we've been seeing more variations of them pop up over time. There's a small Japanese market in my area that has a few limited varieties of teriyaki, curry, or garlic chicken and the occasional tempura and a spicy tuna one you can get made to order. The Vietnamese ones have rice or rice noodle ones with your choice of chicken, beef, or pork. The Chinese ones have barbecue and roast pork usually though some have begun to serve eel in theirs. The self heating meals are usually the same as the MREs as well. They add the chemical at the line so when water reaches that point, it starts heating. It's not very common in a lot of western packaged foods, but you see it pop up a lot more in premium Asian brands.
@deepstonecostcoАй бұрын
@@zombiegoddess1524 I was less thinking on the bentos themselves and more just bemoaning the fact that options on the go for americans is way more limited. I drive a lot and the options are kinda sad

Japan is next level at this kinda thing and it's one of the many reasons I love Japan. They take food so much more seriously than we do here in the US--for those who don't know? That's why it's considered extremely rude to eat while walking, because it shows disrespect to the people that made the food you're eating. So I've heard anyway. Next time I go there I've got to get me one or two of those bento boxes.

I love love LOVE that some of them (e.g. 12:04) include meats on the list of potential allergens. I've never seen that here in Australia and I don't believe it's a thing in the US either, but it's very kind of them, although it could be an industry regulation in Japan... either way, very considerate. Not just for people who don't eat meat at all, but also for those who have red meat allergies, and for the example provided, people who consider the pig and/or the cow sacred animals that should not be consumed. Not sure if I would've done it like this though! 😅Hopefully the cute ones were aimed at children because that's a lot of food go through and try. I would've probably brought them home and filmed over several meals. Hope you didn't have any discomfort after all of that ♡ sucks to travel and move with too full a stomach. Love this channel! I keep going over the ones from 2-3 years ago. I love the supermarket convenience meals, the cheap candy and the expensive convenient delicacies. Edit: and very cheap for the amount of food you got! Wow! And I hope you had a drink with you :) lots of salty, savoury foods here. I did notice that you didn't really try the carrots though. If we ever meet on a train like this... y'know... I'd be very happy to take that off your hands haha. You can have my tofu!

Thank you for this great video ! I have subscribed to your channel just a few days ago, and already love it. Your content is really good and the quality of the videos is amazing. Those bento boxes look all quite interesting. Myself, the JR Cargo bentos look like the tasties one, and the containers will certainly be useful in the future. Where can you buy those bentos ? I have been to Japan several times, and always travel by train, but I have never seen any of those bento boxes at train station shops.
@swissfoodie3542Ай бұрын
My favorite bento box on a train, was in Beppu last year. I dont remember the name of it, but it was in a beautiful container with about 20 small separate "windows", and each one contained another food. It was not only beautiful, but also really tasty. However: I have still not gotten used to eat food, that should be eaten warm, cold. So, if I can, I will always prefer to eat at a train station restaurant before or after a train journey. So that the food is warm.

Oh so I am craving real Japanese food! I was stationed in Japan, in Kami Seya , when I was in the Navy. There used to be a Navy facility on Kaigun doro , in Kami Seya. I loved the Japanese food! I would eat out in Japanese restaurants every chance I got. And I fell in love with Japan. I’d love to go back if I could. When I came back to the US I searched out the good authentic Japanese restaurants. I even learned to cook a couple of dishes myself. Where I live now doesnt have anything that’s authentic. The flavors are off, the food is not cooked like Japanese food , there’s too much “fusion” of Japanese flavors and ingredients wirh other Asian cuisines.….. even tho the restaurants say that are Japanese cuisine, they are just so disappointing.

They also have ice cream or Dahi, too . Sometimes, they r included in the package, or they come to take orders. In some trains, evening snacks , breakfasts, and tea are also provided
