Taiwanese here, just wanted to point out that everything he ate was very typical local dishes of what people would have everyday. The breakfast sandwich and the burger are not the ones you’d have imagined, they are very (and I mean *very*) cheap in breakfast restaurants. Usually for students or ppl who want to grab and finish them quickly. Oh and the word _toast_ means the kind of bread in Chinese, not the action (or the result of that action.. you know what i mean). Personally I think the meals look way better than the other vending machine ones in other countries (no offense). I think mostly because these are served fresh and hot (ppl working there usually order them in groups/batches for lunch anyways) where as the other ones are just microwaved meal. Cheers

Just a note, due to the commonality of convenience stores in Taiwan, vending machines like this are rare sights. The aimed consumer group for this is not the public but people working in the building in order to save them time and money (less on the latter part, mainly because it's on the more expensive side compared to the cheaper options even for downtown Taipei)

Had something like this at one of the IBM facilities I worked at in the NY/CT/NJ area. They had local delis come in and stock the machines with fresh food every day. Usually, by morning, they were mostly empty because all the late night changes after business hours. It's hard to find meals when you work late into the night and early morning. You know, when you get paged out for an outage at 1am and you know you're going to be there for hours... it was the perfect way to keep us happy.

Vending machine cafes were once really common and popular in America, basically the predecessor to fast food. We had them in the 1940s and 50s, and we called them automats... short for "automatic cafe". There is only one automat left in America as far as I'm aware, and I can't be certain, but I think it's in Boston. Seeing automats all over Asia, like in Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore makes me wish they'd come back to the US.

I think he was referring to a lot of micro transactions in a short time. Often credit theft will begin this way then there will be a big payment later.

The last red meal box is a classic train bento people used to sell at 福隆train station hence the locomotive drawing on top Directly outside of 福隆Train station is a public beach thats why people get off at that station and when its lunch time they will go buy one of these and I've been there a couple of times and have fond memories when seeing this

Taiwanese here.... that's not a credit card. That's our subway pass (EasyCard).... we use it mainly for transportation (subway systems, trains, ferries, taxis, buses, bike share and parking meters all take easycards), but convenience stores like 7-11 and some vending machines also take easycards. Taipei Zoo and some events also take easycards as tickets or coupons. Hospitals also take easycards. They come in regular credit-card shape with different designs and also irregular shapes like keychain tags and buttons. It's much more useful than a credit card and it's something I would have on me before even thinking about bringing my credit card...

Wow, this is amazing. We had stores like this in the USA in the early 1900s. They were called the Automat. I guess everything old is new again.

You can also go to the basement of Taipei 101 where there's a giant food court or a few streets over there are restaurants selling the same thing made fresh. This is really about time/convenience.
@robertzeurunkl84012 жыл бұрын
Those all look quite tasty, and those prices are great. 50 ND (assuming that's the currency) is about $1.75, and anything of that size or quality in the vending machines we have here at work cost $4.25 to $5.00 (118 ND to 140 ND)
