My fondest memory of Dandenong station was this guy who used to get off the train and barrel through any person who was in the way. This one time, it was a woman with a stroller. He literally grabbed the stroller and moved it out of the way. He was getting out of that station first, you could bet money on it. I saw him do this so many times, and I just laughed. I think he did this because the buses were notorious for exiting the bus area just as your leaving your train. So many times you'd watch your bus disappear helpless. This guy was just very serious about getting to his bus.

Great video, mate! Dandenong station was like Flinders Street Station number two-it had everything and remained busy. Even though all the stock sidings are gone, it still is a dump. Dandenong Station will need a facelift and an urgent upgrade in the coming years. Your videos are amazing, and I congratulate you on your effort to make them enjoyable. Keep up the amazing work, mate. I can't wait for the next video.

2:37 The section of the South Gippsland line to Cranbourne never actually closed. So, Dandenong never actually lost it's junction. It was only the passenger service to Leongatha which ceased to operate in 1993. From 1993 to 1995, the line from Cranbourne to Dandenong operated as a diesel-hauled shuttle whilst electrification work was underway. Also, apparently freight services on the South Gippsland line ran as far as the Koala Siding (near Nyora) until 1998. Great video though!

Personally, I love the fact that these tram squares existed. We would never build them today. And some of them seem ultimately pointless. Imagine how many decades the Frankston line had to pass over one, just so the tram could end another 1.5km further.

@ 0:20. I can assure you that’s not Dandenong 1979 in that photo. It’s likely Dandenong 1960. There is no Myer store (1974). No Endeavour Hills (it occupied the land behind and started early 1970’s).

Hello, one thing you didn't mention was brake vans. I remember many sitting near the bacon factory. If I remember right, there were usually 4 or 5 there most days in the 70s.
@VictorianTransportHistory2 ай бұрын
When trains where being shunted in Main Dandenong yards the break vans would usually be shunted into a separate siding, to get them out of the way. Come to think of it this was probably one of the purposes of the 2 random sidings, to store Break vans. Trains which terminated at Dandenong would also leave behind there Break vans, this would result in several Break vans to stack up, and some Break vans to be deployed on another train that they arrived on.

A couple of comments. The rail to Yarram was known as the Woodside track. You have also not mentioned that the rail went through Nyora to Wonthaggi.

@@ianmontgomery7534 Thank you, I didn't know the Yarram line was called the Woodside track, as for Wonthaggi I didn't mention it as it wasn't really relevant to Dandenong, although it was where most of the V.r's coal supply came from. @@ianmontgomery7534 Probably not, in 1979 the last steam engine was withdrawn (K162) and the state coal mine was closed a decade earlier, so I doubt the sidings had anything to do with Coal workings. General goods would have just used the main yards.

@@roadwolf2 While most are permitted, only Hcmt make a daily appearance. I am aware that Comengs sometimes run to Westall depot (one did yesterday), and occasionally make up 1 or 2 services (one Comeng went to Cranborne last week). However these are few and far between, and usually not scheduled. Such as the week where the Pakenham line was closed because of the Lxrp, several Hcmt's where trapped at East Pakenham and several peak hour services where operated by a pair of 6 car Comrngs and 6 car Siemens. But again this was a special occasion.
