Went to Chiang Mai for what was meant to a one month trip and ended up staying 10 years. Great place! Going to buy a condo there this year. I remember going to Nimmen for the first time in 2003 and there were still bamboo-walled, open-style, cafes, and there was one Wa Wee Coffee (the only place with real coffee) which used to have three or four farangs and a couple of Thais at a time. The reason that coffee really took off in CM was because the Queen Mother, Princess Srinagarindra, at 88 years old made it her mission to have the farmers of Doi Tung particularly replace opium crops with coffee crops. Wasn't hard to convince them as they made a LOT more with coffee. From the early 90s to the early 00s, more and more coffee was grown, eventually completely pushing opium out. PM Thaksin's push against drugs in 2003 (approx. 2800 (supposed) drug dealers summarily executed by gunshot by police during October 2003) had an effect too as did the capture of Khun San (the Burmese drug lord). Now, outside of Melbourne, CM is consider one the best place for serious coffee drinkers on Earth. Enjoy that coffee.

@@markseymour8365 global averages have calculated about 1500 hours to basic fluency in the THAI language. So you could learn it in a year if you spent 5 hours a day Every day in language submersion. But most do a couple of hours a week ,that's 15 years according to statistics.NOT my opinion , but a fact , unless you discredit the global averages,some.people will 🙃 . I am fluent and can read and right Thai ,so I have a decent take on these statistics. Remember not all humans are born equal and some will not be able to learn fluency in Thai in their entire lifetime ,others will learn quicker . I know personally only Two Westerners that are fluent in Thai after living here for 15 year's.. that's how easy it is.. maybe your a quick learner with a specific language gene 😶 Stuart Jay Raj said he reads a dictionary and remembes 100s of words a day... My boyfriend and I have been living in Chiang Mai since last year and will be here till November. Before we came here, I watched this video and I remember I had a different perspective to now, having never been to Chiang Mai before. Watching it now, seeing you walk down the street we live on and around Nimman, is such a strange feeling! The fact that you were visiting, after having lived here years ago, kind of made me a bit emotional 😅 and just extra appreciative to be here now! Because one day we will also come back and look at it as the city we ‘used’ to live in 🥹 The time is going so fast!

Squeeze lime into Pad Thai, put bean sprout in, and sprinkle dried red chili a little bit or more to enhance spiciness favor. Eat Pad Thai with fork and spoon and occasionally pick green veggie and chew it. When Pad Thai was promoted by Prime Minister Field Marshall Pibulsongkram during WWII as a national dish, it was supposed to be cheap but delicious. Nowadays the price can be dirt cheap about US$1 on the street up to $10 in 5-star hotel. You can buy one at the price of $1 (35 baht) freshly cooked on local market but with no prawn as prawn is expensive. Pad Thai with 2 prawns can be had on the street at the price around 60-100 baht ($2-$3).

Aussie here. Moved permanently to Chiang Mai 6 yrs ago. Been bloody fantastic. BUT, CHIANG MAI 2024 has turned into BEIJING. Chinese EVERYWHERE. In the past 6 yrs I have NEVER seen CM as BUSY as it is now. Loi Krathong last weekend was OVER THE TOP with TOURISTS….. the traffic was like Bangkok. Normally it gets busy a week or two before Xmas/New Year but it’s 3rd week in November and it is MAXED OUT with tourists already. An ex-pat consensus is that we have seen the best of CM and it ain’t coming back. The Chinese are buying up all the Condo buildings, commercial buildings and warehouses and pushing sale and rent prices SKY HIGH, double to triple what they have always been and only selling/renting to fellow Chinese. Yep, CM has had the prawn. And you gotta ask, what’s it going to be like in 5-10 yrs time. The increased population and traffic is way OVER THE TOP NOW. Chiang Mai is DONE!!!! And observing the foreign tourists, media posers, COVERED IN TATTOOS, OBESE, with self indulgent arrogant attitudes, all a far cry from the gentility of the Thai family culture. It’s why we escaped the west years ago, and it’s now permeating CM…. turning it into ANOTHER HIPSTER TIKTOK LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME CLONE CITY OF WESTERN DEGRADATION……. Many original expats, including moi, are MOVING OUT. It’s ALREADY DONE… so yeah, in another 5 yrs it will be just another BANGKOK coffee shop tattoo shop CLONE. We LOVE (D) CM, but who wants what it is turning into?? The laid back quiet traditional Thai charm is RAPIDLY BEING DILUTED. We are thinking Siem Reap in Cambodia or Rishikesh in India ….. anywhere that’s far far away from this Chinese TIKTOK INSTAGRAM WESTERN PERVASION invasion…….

Singha beer in brown bottle was introduced/produced into Thailand about 100 years ago using German recipe by King Rama VI court official Pirompakdi family ancestor. It was highly appreciated by both Thai and expat drinkers. Even though other local brand was introduced one after another but could not shake Singha's dominance and died away until Thai Beverages, the largest and most dominant liquor producer (mostly rum and white spirit) in Thailand, decided to partner with Carlberg to produce the Carlberg brand locally to compete with Singha. It also resulted in a failure to challenge Singha. Both sides gradually drifted apart and Carlberg was eventually no longer produced locally. Before the final breakup, Thai Beverages introduced Chang (Elephant) beer in green bottle, which was much cheaper to gain market share from Singha. It was successful in a few years after heavy promotion and discounted price, and became No.1 seller. This was the reason that Carlberg decided to quit the Thai market as it seemed its Thai partner did not care to promote Carlberg anymore after Chang beer was successfully introduced. Singha did not give in and introduced Leo in brown bottle at the same price of Chang and it instantly became a success as well. Now, Chang and Leo are neck and neck, dominating local Thai beer market. Owners of Chang/rum/white spirit and Singha/Leo are Thai billionaires. Note: Alcohol sale is banned on religious holidays and the evening prior to general election day and the election day itself. On a regular day, alcohol sale is available from 11.00-14.00 and 17.00-24.00 at 7-11 and mini/super stores, Lotus or Big C. However, this is Thailand and you can always buy your favorite beer/liquor at your small convenient store in your village at all hours (if the store opens). Some shops stay open until 2 am on Friday and Saturday in some villages. Don't know why the police ignore those small shops selling alcohol at all hours. BTW, Chang/Leo in 350 ml can costs 35-36 baht at neighboring village store but 39 baht at 7-11.

Wow.thanks for your writing.

Chang and Leo are both quite disgusting in my opinion, especially Chang which upset my stomach every time I drank it. They are both aimed at the poorer end of the Thai market so it always looks quite odd to me when I see Westerners drinking it. And at 6.4% when introduced, Chang was aimed squarely at the alcoholics, much like Tenants Super in the UK. I did used to like the taste of Singha but when they reduced the A.B.V. from 6% to 5%, they spoiled it (again IMO). The best lager in Thailand today is, as it has been since I first moved here, Beer Laos (Dark). EDIT: And if you live here, you ought to know exactly why the police ignore some law breakers and not others.

ah.. so much difference.. first time i was there for 3 months back in 2005.. then went back in 2018. having no mobile internet, no vloggers, no google maps, no dating app, no online booking makes a huge difference. 😂😂😂

I'm also returning to Chiang Mai. interesting to hear about how things where before. My first time in thailand last year I stayed at palm springs 9 months of traveling I came to Chiang Mai because its the most peaceful place and I needed to find myself

Wow, the prices that you mentioned seemed very expensive to me? I probably had the wrong idea but 600 CAD/month for an apartment? 5.33 for two coffees? What are people making there for hourly wages and how are the taxes? What about building permit®ulations when you ant to build yourself?
@DaneAndStacey9 ай бұрын
A lot has changed over the years and prices have definitely gone up. Don't forget this is a very touristy area - expats, nomads, travellers - so the costs are higher.
@fabiancanada88769 ай бұрын
@@DaneAndStacey Yes I understand. Things have been getting quite bad here in Canada over the past years and we started looking at other countries. But the more we look the more we see how rules®ulation are everywhere and that there seems to be no escaping. A lot of places have become expensive to live. For people with children and no retirement income or online income it seems very difficult to find a good place now?!

Hi there, can you do a comparison between 2019 or 2018 and Now for Chiang Mai? Actually, I visited Chiang Mai in 2019 November for just 4 Days 😊

Chiangmai is one of our favorite places. We spent 1 month there in 2014. Always planned to return but because the world got crazy we haven’t traveled all that much lately. Seems prices have increased quite a bit but that’s everywhere it seems.
@DaneAndStacey Жыл бұрын
Yeah fairly similar to most places we'd say - still highly worth going back when you can

I’ll watch it later but I was surprised to see Japanese snack bars in Nimman. But when I talked to the mamasan she told me wanted Chinese businessmen. I’ve stayed at sabai Sabai before. Nice place. Weed was everywhere in 2018 but now it’s legal. The bar that used to specialize in it 2017-19 is now out of business.

Can you live in Chiang Mai on english only or do you need to learn the language right away?
@DaneAndStacey Жыл бұрын
You can easily get by! No stress at all there - though a little goes a long way in terms of language obviously

Perfect timing! I was supposed to go in 2019 - but got diagnosed with a chronic illness and then covid hit. I've been wondering what's changed and if it was still an option. Because I'm ready to get back to traveling again. So many of the travel vids are from years ago. I'm SO glad you guys are back and made an updated video.

Do you need to show that you have health insurance in the customs in Thailand, and do you need a "covid vaccine passport"
