Any travel research for things to do in Taupo New Zealand will likely feature the Huka Falls jet boat near the top. Despite a massive amount of iconic things to see and activity options the jet has held a spot on that list for as long as we can remember, so for this little Taupō roadie we knew it had to feature! But enter a new and even more hilarious contendor for the top spot - the doughboat on Lake Taupo!
Doughboats are essentially doughnut shaped boats that you take out on the lake. Armed with a bluetooth speaker, a heater, a radio and ideally some food (and or booze) you get to see Taupo from a different angle exploring on your lonesome. It's random, hilarious and one now one of our favourite things to do in Taupo!
So which would you pick? The calm of the doughboats humming along on Lake Taupo or the speed and adrenaline of the mighty Huka Jet boosting up the river?

Can't wait to try out the Doughboats next year. We did the Huka Jetboat in the rain ten years ago. It wasn't so much fun getting hit in the face by the raindrops at that speed! Loved the Shotover Jet though and looking forward to taking the kids on it this time! 🙌

We visited NZ at the start of winter, much the same weather as in this series. AND we did the Shotover Jet as well. BUT it was the Jet ride in Fiji, much warmer. We had 22 days Fiji, NZ, then OZ. NZ was great fun for us. We took our youngest, our only daughter, with us on this trip. The older kids, all boys in their teens declined. When they saw the videos, opinions changed... 😉!

It’s always good to keep something back for next time! I can recommend Barbary tours yacht on L Taupo for a trip out to the Maori carvings, although nice weather helps, as you can then swim off the yacht in Mine Bay near the rock carving! Enjoy, and thanks for the kiwi fix from the UK

Yes we were actually supposed to do that but the lake level was too low so our tour got cancelled. Looks like we'll have to go back in the summer 😊
