UMK / UPPER MIDDLE KAWEAH 700CFS
The UMK is still to me one of the best day runs out there, California or elsewhere. It has such a nice trail to hike to the top, then it's nothing but sick kayaking all the way back to the car. As we were getting to the end of the Cali trip we were getting anxious to head in as it's such an incredible section we didn't want to miss. Although it was still holding on the high side, we decided to try pushing it a bit higher than we have before. Probably would have been better to wait a bit longer, but in the end it was still as EPIC as always.

😂😂 Btw what day were you guys in there? We went in August 27 and it was about 400 on the dot. Great first time flow (but could have used a little more for sure).

Hospital Bar was a bucket list for years. While those days are gone, I certainly appreciate being able to live vicariously through these video and reminisce about what was.

Those canyons are so gorgeous (no pun) with the water like that, I would want to just sit in the pools along the way and the team would hate me.

That was saucy! What a ride! Bren is a really strong paddler, but the flow was so powerful in that place where everyone was getting pushed into the wrong side that the water pretty much had his way with him every time he tried to paddle across it. That is enough to tell us all just how strong that rapid is. The two out of it sure looked like a blast though. Stout, but a pretty piece of water too. There were some pretty sick lines too. Great edit! Dane, regarding the rattlers, the ones there aren't like the timber rattlers back east. They don't want any part of you if they can avoid it, and most are probably long gone and hiding by the time you get to where they were. The thing you have to be careful of is around the boulders. They will get under those to hide, or to cool off in the heat of the day. It's always a real good idea to look under the rock before you reach a hand under there. When you're setting up straps and lines, or if you need to climb out of a tight spot, look under the rock first. That way you can avoid an unpleasant surprise for both you and the snake. They will also hide out at the base of thick bushes or in the yucca fronds. I doubt you'll be kicking around in any of that tough. We don't want to see the world's favourite kayaker and coach get bit and have to sit in the hospital for several days while it runs its course. That would probably make the world's other favourite kayaker and coach sad. Have you ever seen a sad ginger headed guy before? It's a real heart-rending thing to see. Keep stoked, and keep safe (but keep doing outrageous laps)!

I learn a lot from these videos, been surfing for 50 years all over the world and got into kayaking later in life and realize I need to be more scared. Watching you pros run these rivers, discuss lines and portages has opened my eyes to situations that are more dangerous than I thought. Been hiring guide/teachers to help me learn quicker and have never run higher than a class 4 so far.

That rescue from the left side eddy at Rusty's was so well thought out and executed, and they looked like they had a blast skidding over the current into the right side eddy. You'd almost think that they would be doing that just for the fun run out of the eddy! Well done! What happens with the video at 15:18? It seems to freeze and underwater sounds are heard?

A couple things... One, Hospital Rock is good down to 400cfs. Two. That hike is closer to 5.5-6 miles with that extra hike, not 4 miles 😂😂
