In the Japanese subtitles, it says "Dang Thai Son was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1958. He started learning piano from his mother at the age of 4. He entered the Vietnam National Academy of Music at the age of 7 and studied there for 11 years. During the Vietnam war, he practised on lined-up wooden planks on his bed. In 1977, he entered the Moscow Conservatory of Music. In 1980 he won the 10th Chopin Competition."

Well, you should not. The pianist himself got no support from Vietnam from the beginning. He was born in Vietnam for sure but it is very unfortunate that he had to walk the path himself without any help from his home country. They only saw him when he won the first prize in this prestigious competition.

@@thanhgiau I agree that the bereaucreacy from the gov is something inexcusable. But by looking at the bigger picture, it was not just "the war" at that time but "the WARS". Vietnam in 1980 was in a huge different situation from now, fighting against China, Khmer Rogue and dealling with economic difficulties were indeed a more live or dead matter than a pianist participating a competition, not mentioning communication infrastructures weren't as advance as nowadays.

Still wondering how he actually won that most controversial year (and of course competitions are never fair or subjective but that year 1980 was truly special with Argerich could not stand it and simply walked out ...), Mr. Son plays clean and he looks like a very obedient student for sure, but there seems to be lacking of convincing musical character or originality ... and do not get me wrong: no doubt he is a very clean and fast piano player!
