In the Japanese subtitles, it says "Dang Thai Son was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1958. He started learning piano from his mother at the age of 4. He entered the Vietnam National Academy of Music at the age of 7 and studied there for 11 years. During the Vietnam war, he practised on lined-up wooden planks on his bed. In 1977, he entered the Moscow Conservatory of Music. In 1980 he won the 10th Chopin Competition."

As far as I know, he is the first contestant to win the piano concerto No. 2 at the Chopin Competition. When everyone chose Concerto No. 1, he chose No. 2 and even won the championship. It's an amazing skill.

Well, you should not. The pianist himself got no support from Vietnam from the beginning. He was born in Vietnam for sure but it is very unfortunate that he had to walk the path himself without any help from his home country. They only saw him when he won the first prize in this prestigious competition.
@minhthongtraquang4894 Жыл бұрын
@@thanhgiau Without any support, how ignorant are you to say so. Please be reminded with the support of whom did he get the scholarship to Russia Conservatory to study and leverage his skills up to this level. It was the right the end of the war, the country was devastated by the war yet he was still able have to such privilege which much proved the profound recognition of Vietnamese government for his merit already.
@thanhgiau Жыл бұрын
@@minhthongtraquang4894 Dude, they did not give him any spirit support neither. He needed money and document from the government. He got none. The war is not the good excuse for that.
@minhthongtraquang4894 Жыл бұрын
@@thanhgiau I agree that the bereaucreacy from the gov is something inexcusable. But by looking at the bigger picture, it was not just "the war" at that time but "the WARS". Vietnam in 1980 was in a huge different situation from now, fighting against China, Khmer Rogue and dealling with economic difficulties were indeed a more live or dead matter than a pianist participating a competition, not mentioning communication infrastructures weren't as advance as nowadays.

Impressive performance! It's remarkable how a pianist, with only three years of training and no prior experience playing with an orchestra on the stage (as mentioned in a 2011 interview with Dang), could claim the first prize. Isn’t it just as interesting that some pianist and his supporters took advantage of, in the 1980 Competition, a "scandal" to launch his career and to overshadow Son. It appears as ironically that his fame was boosted by his elimination😊

Still wondering how he actually won that most controversial year (and of course competitions are never fair or subjective but that year 1980 was truly special with Argerich could not stand it and simply walked out ...), Mr. Son plays clean and he looks like a very obedient student for sure, but there seems to be lacking of convincing musical character or originality ... and do not get me wrong: no doubt he is a very clean and fast piano player!

It's a little bit innacurate. After winning the Chopin competition, he deciced he wasn't yet ready to enter the world of a soloist and decided to stay at the Moscow conservatory and finish his studies even though he coul've toured all over the world and become a world class soloist. Once he graduated, several years later, he was forgotten...
