Special thanks to user "symmetry543" for giving me this game! You'd think this would be a non-canon spinoff, but you're completely wrong - this game is influential for both the anime and takes place between Danganronpa 1 and 2. This game isn't as low budget as you'd expect either - it has a complete campaign with uniquely-designed levels, though there are times where you need to backtrack.
There's a lot of enemy variety and in-between combat sections there are puzzle sections that required you to find a child or destroy all of the enemies at once. There are very lengthy cutscenes, especially at the end which had a lot more plot twists than I had expected. I really enjoyed the character's expressions - a lot of detail was put into them and they actually show the characters hands and posture when talking - it's not strictly copy and paste and add faces. Both of the protagonists likely have about 20 unique facial expressions each.
I've never seen a character in media as evil as Monaca either - Monaca makes John Kramer/Jigsaw look like Mickey Mouse. These kids have really sad backgrounds and the plot was handled really well for this game. What really made me mad, though, was (spoilers don't continue reading if you're watching the anime) how Monaca ended up becoming a "space NEET" rather than actually following what was shown in the ending of this game. Wasted plot development and a rapid change in direction.
