It is a shame a lot of the back routes are useless or unneeded, some of the dialogue is good, especially case 3's first back route. Gonta and Miu's dialogue and then Keebo having a nervous "breakdown" (by apologizing and then suddenly turning on his light...TWICE) about lying is just gold.

​@Celes thats a good concept but...you'd still have to overcome the many new voicelines and branching paths+outcomes that'd come with this concept, and thats just too much writing and work. and yes the "Makoto's imaginary bad ending" in D1 is a good example, but that was more smallerscale+easier to do compared to something as complex as having the players actions choose who basically lives or dies. (But seeing the unused execution concepts used and animated for this would've been really nice though...) (tbh they can only pull this off in V3 and D2, def not D1 as that would affect future media unless they put a "canon route", which theoretically would make this concept pointless.)

If you're saying you want routes where you can go "I want this character to live so I'm gonna go with the route where this character lives!", then nah, I'm good. But if you're talking like YTTD where some characters will die no matter what, some characters you get to choose but even if you like a character over another you can find merit in letting that character die, then yeah, now we're talking.

Fun fact: Tsumugi rarely argues any actual points. When she does it’s mostly to get people back on track, otherwise it’s references and meaningless garbage. Other characters do debates and argue over the truth, while Tsumugi just kinda quietly stands there. She doesn’t do major debates, mostly just commenting “oh what a mystery” or making a one off comment.

@@ShikuQuaza I agree with this mainly because I think Uchikoshi writes better main characters. The only times Kodaka excelled at his main heroes is with Komaru and Toko in UDG. Kodaka can write great side characters and I think his villains in Junko, Nagito, and Tsumugi are better written than the Zero Escape Antagonists, however I think the antagonist of AI: The Somnium can stand with them as a great Antagonist. I will say that Kodaka was at his best when he was using Uchikoshi's tropes (DR2), and Uchikoshi was at his worst when he was forced to make his game more like DR to be successful (VLR).

They play off each other very well. While I love Danganronpa, I do think Zero Escape overall is a better series. But I agree that the villains in Danganronpa have a greater presence overall and that kinda fits Kodaka's relatively realistic settings. But the games are pretty different overall, the branching paths fit in Zero Escape because that's the whole point of the plot. Even in AI, where they weren't as necessary, they still felt really good because the branching paths helped flesh out side characters and add more to the overall mystery. For Danganronpa, I wonder if it would feel out of place if each trial had multiple endings that affected which characters got to stick around longer and whatnot. I'm welcome to that idea, but I'd have to see it in true practice rather than the limp attempts given with the back routes in DRV3.

@@SideBySidePlays The main problem with that extent of branching paths is that if choices actually decided which characters lived or died, it would mean too much writing. Even if each of the 6 trials only had 2 outcomes, they’d need to manage 64 different paths. Even though you could collapse some of them into each other or reuse scenes, that still means at least 10x the work to make the writing the same quality as it currently is. Not to mention they’d have to rewrite each trial around (16 choose (# alive characters) ) times.

I think it's cool how Perjury relies on just two components: the inversion of an existing Truth Bullet, and whether that statement makes sense in a vacuum. Like, it doesn't matter that what you're arguing is obviously wrong from your perspective -- if it's plausible it's valid. It's a delightful mechanic and a great narrative tool.

Technically you missed one *SPOILERS* In the 6th trial, during the last nonstop debate in the game, instead of just hitting none of the argue or agree points and letting time run out, you can turn the one truth bullet “continue the game” into a lie bullet “stop the game” and fire it at any of the points, it pretty much gives the same result

I did that in the second case. SPOILER WARNING FOR V3-2. ... I could not for the life of me figure out how to pin Kirumi, so I tried lying about the fact that I heard her return to the dorms. I knew that with earlier lie of Kaito and Shuichi hearing Maki this one would also work. I never expected this to be a back-route. It felt great!

I wish that back routes were more... needed. Like they just feel like decorative dialogue. Wish they gave something to you or changed how to trail went all together

That would be way too hard to implement, because that would mean the story would need to be rewritten for every combination of back routes in the game.

@@soundstorm7 well then I would say not put multiple back routes into a game. I loved the “bad ending” in Trigger Happy Havoc, and that was basically another route. When I say change how to trial goes I don’t mean change who the killer is, but more mean have multiple ways you can solve the case and lose the case, maybe a route causes you to accuse the wrong person, or someone else helps solve the case. Stuff like that
