⁠i feel like he kinda knew what he was doing, but it wasnt just because he wanted to kill. shuichi already said his AI counterpart in the virtual world was different to his real counterpart in reality, and it messed up his personality, and probably his judgement too. even if we take alter ego gonta's word for it, he only killed miu because he wanted to help everyone else, not outta malice. he just wanted to be "useful" 😭
