Good job Stuie!! It's good to know I'm not alone in this world of mechanical frustration. First we build a complex bit of kit with complete access to all 6 sides of the beast. Then we stick it in a coffee can. Then we try to fix it without taking it out of the can. That's boating mechanics in a nut shell. Hello and "Howdy" from the great state of Arizona.

Wow, with that many turns on the rudder wheel, you need a tiller indicator. Lord, that's one pretty engine! Props to Adrian and his magic fingers! Flux coated rods are Hydroscopic, put them in your oven for a half hour at about 100C and they will dry out nicely. You will see the difference as soon as you weld with them...Pro welders have a dedicated oven to keep their rods dry, Ladies appreciate a dry rod...Barefoot welding and the only blisters you get is from shoes...Come on guys, we need to start a 'Go fund me' to buy Stu some 'Aussie Soles'...Ah, the sound of a happy Cummings! Poor old shabby Renko is now a proper classy lady! She's a testament to your love and hard work, congrats Stu!... ;P

I watched your videos on repairing the diesel and I am very impressed by them. The time and effort you invested in the removal, repair, and reinstallation is impressive. The total financial cost must have been significant too. I'm quite impressed by the sheer massive size of the engine. My grandfather had a small sawmill back in the 1970s that he operated 7 days a week. He found a gasoline V8 engine in a junkyard, rescued it, and used it to power the sawmill. That engine must have been very small in comparison to your diesel.

Hello from Ontario Canada, Nice to see Renko back in service! Word of advice from a professional insulator, take your fibreglass wrap and put it in a bucket of fresh water, weigh it down and let it soak up for 20-30 minutes, then when you wrap it the itchy fibres don’t fly everywhere. Also you can get it tighter by firing the engine while the wrap is still damp and letting the heat shrink it up a bit. Cheers Stu!

I live in the middle of South Dakota, USA. Midwest if you will, I don’t like water over 2 inches deep. I’m totally immersed in this story line. Well done ole chap, you are well rounded in multiple abilities and make for interesting content. I’m subscribed for the time being until you hit rough water than I’m sea sick.

I'm impressed that the little Quinny with the F60 Yamaha towed Renko so easily! Oh, and when you said you were "Stig" welding, I had visions of you doing it while wearing a white Simpson helmet ;) Engine room looks much better now, huge improvement, and, 9 knots!! :)

We picked the incoming tide to make the tow easier, against the current would be a different story. I'll have to find that helmet. ;)

Stick welding usually requires that you keep the rods in a case to keep them from absorbing water from the air into the flux coating. The water in the coating really affects the quality of the weld and the appearance. Since you are so close to the water, those rods probably are saturated in water, which is why they are going chalky. You can dry them by cooking them in an oven at between 350 to 400 degrees for about an hour. If you have them sitting on tinfoil or a pan, roll the rods to dry out all sides. Normally it takes less time to dry them out, but they are highly saturated. Once you have them dry, keep them in a closed airtight case with some desiccant in it to keep them dry.

yeah.I worked at a big welding shop on serious stuff for oil-rigs.I remember they had steel cases with a heating elements wired to the welding transformers to keep the rods bone dry..

Great effort on the project, she sounds like a Detroit 4/71 should do! Never did like the hose clamps with the slots, they always bit into the rubber and damaged it. To me the ones with the pressed in thread or the T type are superior. Keep on keepin on.
