Get Out was lightning in a bottle and now everyone in Hollywood is doing a rain dance. It's like they forgot that US was good too, without being as racially focused. You can have black characters in a movie do other things too, writers! 🙄 Edit: I just learned that this movie was made by BET. Boondocks needs a reboot for this foolishness. 🤦🏽‍♀️

The other thing with Jordan Peele rip offs, is that they miss the subtle nature of his writing. Get Out for example doesn't work if the parents are rude and racist to Chris right off the bat. Jordan Peele lures you in by making them nice white liberal covert/unintentional racists. He even makes them seem overly accepting and tolerant. Then BOOM. The suspense and the switch up. Especially with the girlfriend. Versus....this trash lol.
@eleanormason2647
@eleanormason2647 3 жыл бұрын
yeah it's like how people expect racists to be, when in actual fact it's much more common for people to be all "Well I can't be racist" yet still fully willing to call the cops on a family barbecue, that kinda thing. As a non American, calling the police in any non threatening situation is completely wild to me- I got raised on the idea that you could get into big trouble for knowingly wasting police time
@Kevo6492
@Kevo6492 3 жыл бұрын
Get Out critiques racism but more of the upper class, status quo, milquetoast, liberal racism. Which made me find funny conservatives who simply hated or dismissed the movie because it criticized racism. Like….it’s kinda right up your ally because Jordan is mainly critiquing liberals. It’s also about internalized racism/need to fit in with the sunken place. Kinda akin to Sorry to Bother You’s exposition on switch coding. Which this film, Karen, addresses nothing of. It goes for the most obvious racism with poor directing, awful dialogue, and more.

You know, if they made it a psychological thriller about a woman *becoming* the Karen, it’d be way more interesting. Like she starts out as this super quiet woman who can’t stand up for herself, and she copes with her social anxiety by writing how she feels in a little pocket book. She can even have a Karen friend who teaches her how to stand up for herself, with the woman getting an addiction to the power dynamic of being a Karen. Soon she spirals into an extremely insufferable person, with her friends cutting her off one by one, the Karen friend being the last friend left. After she has a public meltdown that escalates into someone getting fired or arrested, the narrative switches to the Karen friend. The Karen friend ends up looking through the woman’s pocket book and it reveals that she was a textbook Karen from day one, with the meltdown revealed as a calculated move that was racially motivated and originally intended to get the police to “clean the streets”. The Karen friend confronts her, and the confrontation ends with the woman shooting her. She then burns her pocketbook and calls the police. She pins it on a “thug”, insisting that the killer will get her next. She starts sobbing, with the final shot implying that this was also calculated. It’s not perfect, but at least it’d be more subtle

I get that Hollywood isn’t known for creativity, but all these Get Out wannabes that boil down to “black people suffer for 100 minutes” are getting annoying. There are plenty of great films that tackle racism (besides Get Out, Do The Right Thing comes to mind), but it’s a topic that requires great care in media or else it falls flat on its face, and it’s clear that many of these writers don’t have the chops to write it well. Also, it’d be nice to have a modern movie starring black people that isn’t about racism for once (excluding Will Smith action movies, of course, there’s plenty of them)

It's like movie producers watched Get Out and took away nothing from it except "film with racism". That's not how movies like Get Out and Them earned their acclaim. Media with depictions of bigotry that intense are hard to watch, and if they don't have some core theme or a throughline underneath them, it's just shock value of the lowest denominator.

I feel like when this concept was written, they had a director like Quentin Tarantino or Jordan Peele in mind, but literally everyone rejected it... some politely, most not. I'm sure the writer tried for years to convince someone to pick up the project, only finding success in their ability to face the harsh criticism with fewer and fewer tears shed. Things were looking grim, and feeling utterly crushed, the writer retired to the nearest dive bar he could find to drown his sorrows. Five shots of bottom shelf whiskey into the night, while venting his frustration to a bartender who was only half listening, he hopelessly cried out, "Won't ANYONE direct my film?!" And lo, from the back of the bar, emerging from a thick haze of English Leather and Davidoff Classics, came a sniffle and a voice that seemed to carry with it all the confidence and strength lost with time in the writer's own expression. "I'll do it!" Out of the fog stepped Coke Johnson or whatever the fuck his name is, clad in a yellowed and battered sherpa denim jacket peppered with ash burns, his untrimmed nostril hairs dusted in white powder and his eyes filled with intense dedication. It was a moment literally everyone in that bar would soon forget, including Coke Johnson, but they'd clumsily written up a contract right there at that table on a stack of partially shredded cocktail napkins and neither one of them realized that probably wasn't legally binding, so the project went ahead.

I think it'd be a better movie if it was like Home Alone; The Karen tries to rid her neighbors with filthy tricks, but the neighbors are always a step ahead and the tricks backfire. Eventually Karen tries to have a petition to get rid of the neighbors, but no one signs, leading to Karen doing one last terrible, terrible thing. Then the neighborhood gangs up on her, turns her house into a horror house while she shops (because we know how long it takes when you're a Karen, and make there be clips of her in different stores yelling at the staff) and when she comes home she gets scared out of her wits and leaves. Happily ever after! The neighbors Karen originally targets don't even have to be black; they could have a gay couple or an interracial couple. But I like the idea of the neighbors sticking up for their new neighbors.
