You're right. This is the first time in that vlog that he has spoken about Van in the present tense. He normally only does it in the past tense and never shows footage of Van from back in the days. Dean is the only one who speaks in these vlogs,, never Van. Not everything has to be made public, but it has been patently obvious there ain't all smooth sailing, as he and Van were incredibly close and then just drifted apart. And for Van to be living in the city and never around is telling.
