Thanks so much for sharing! What a great example of how immigration has always made the US better. ( My multi-great Irish granddad was a horse thief running from the noose, but let's not talk about that, lol!!!)
@Sinn010022 күн бұрын
@LindaYariger We are who we are because we are the world's greatest melting pot. Our incredibly diverse nation has enabled us to invent, create, and mold the entire world around us. Without immigration we would not have access to the breath of talent we have had (and do). Finally, we also have immigration to thank for our lasting freedoms. Without the many cultures coming here there would be no need to extend protections that keep and define our rights today. That is how important immigration is to our nation. Addendum- Now, I think it goes without saying that I'm talking solely about legal immigration. We need people from all over the world here but, we need them honest. They must be willing to assimilate and live by our societal rules and laws.

I'm Irish Catholic American, I am also a life long resident of NYC and have lived in the lower east side, Manhattan for ten years now. Most people are uneducated about the treatment of the Irish immigrants, when I hear white privilege and that white people have never been oppressed or faced racism and hatred which couldn't be farther from the truth. Infact the Irish weren't considered to be white or human and were used as disposable labor and cannon fodder for the civil war. The problem with our education system is the lack of history being taught instead they are being forced to learn about sexuality and the teachers political and sexual preferences instead of the history of the country. I get offended when I'm called a ancestors had been slave owners and oppressed blacks and therefore I am guilty of ? But again it's so far from the truth I want to give them a history lesson. The reason why some black people have Irish last names or are light skinned or have Irish facial features is because the Irish and the blacks lived together and naturally mated with each other. Btw the Irish are still being oppressed and there country is still being occupied by the English just like it's been for 1,000 years. So calling us privileged or not to know what oppression or racism or hatred or being enslaved or forced from your home forced to fight forced to work , is ignorant and far from the truth. Why can't we inform these people about the truth.

I agree, but WHOTF was oppressing you? Surely not people of color. I myself am black with scotch-Irish roots and the irony is not lost on me.
@Vercingetorix.Rising Жыл бұрын
Ya, the Irish slavery myth is, well, a myth. Were the Irish treated poorly? Sure, they were the immigrants of their day . Were they treated as slaves or even indentured servants ? No. The Chinese were treated far worse,actual indentured slaves. And blacks were, well slaves. That Irish slave myth sure makes alot of white guys feel better tho.
@juniorheidt5436 Жыл бұрын
@@louishamilton9648 you do realize the irish-scottish were and kind of still are by some seen as second class compared to English. I’m in the Isle of Man and was at school 20 plus years ago. We were taught this kind of way esp when we covered the old west. We’d also be made to do things like make a newspaper as a class, and each person found random real old stories to report on. And we’d have to make old adverts to include in it and then we aged it with tea bags. They had us do propaganda but for both sides of whichever war or political movement we were learning about. It helped us get into the mind set of the people we studied, and to have empathy for them esp slum dwellers of the industrial revolution

" Sluming" was a popular pass time of the upper classes. Like the protagonist of this narrative one could hire a detective or Pinkerton to escort one through the myriad "Dives" Gin Mills, "Blind Tigers" dance halls & tenements . There were also a semi professional class of guide called "Lobbygows" to take the curious thrill seeker to the more debouched examples of depravity such as opium dens, fan tan parlours and stuss rooms where in which many a life was smoked and gambled away. Par example McGurk's Suicide Hall where many a wretched fallen woman could end her miserable existence in the privacy of a quiet celler corner.

We need a lot more focus on a place simply called "The Old Brewery", one of the most notorious and evil slum buildings in NY history - originally called the Coulthard Brewery, originally built in the late 1700's but later closed and turned into one of the most dangerous and evil crime ridden tenement houses in the history of NY. People went in and never came out, police would not enter it in forces of less than 50 officers if they entered it at all. Home to the original Murderers alley, the source for the phrase den of thieves, prostitutes, shang hai's, rape, robbery, incest, bodies hidden in basement graves and walls, etc etc.

She’s going full circle before our very eyes thanks to piss poor leadership in the city over the last few decades. The amount of money NYC has lost in tourism alone in the last few years is staggering. Add to that the number of small business owners who were forced to move elsewhere and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. I know whereof I speak as my livelihood is closely tied to tourism in cities like NYC. NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia are hanging over a cliff on a rotten cornstalk. It’s going to take strong action from leaders who care not for the political climate or latest fads in society.

This is the stock I’m bred from. One of my grandfathers was born 1909 on Sackett Street in Brooklyn. His great grandparents came here. So I that would be mid 1800’s. And just like us old Brooklyn Irish, my family have either been criminals, NYPD, FDNY, or in the Trade Unions since we got here. Great video. Ya gotta love the tough history of a tough city. Though I can’t say I care for Mr. fancy pants Author Pember’s smug account it. Fun fact for ya: 15:40 That’s the time and place where the ‘Paddy Wagon’ (the Police Van) got its name from. They dressed elegant clothes haunted saloons , black alleys, bloody turf wars with rival gang dead rabbits. Dead rabbit from Irish immigrants they began ad offshoot gang, day break boys crews of river pirates gang reportedly fell apart in late 1950s after police crackdown. Street gang called youth gang they have criminal behavior. Activities of gang are characterized by some level of organization continually over time . End of newyork gang between cannons and solders many gang members are killed.street gangs starred and still exists in urban area major cities as Chicago, newyork other cities as Washington DC . Gangs identify themselves graffiti, hand sign , colors , tattoos. Thank you for giving us chance to read learn new information improve our English language as well. Fact Feast is doing a great job of entertaining the adult version of those kids who took up all of the classtime preventing the majority of the children from learning. Thank goodness American public schools have the remedial track for those children who feel themselves above learning to simply satisfy a personal curiosity. When there are 20 kids in a class and 4 require the teacher to be an expert in edutainment to get their interest piqued, the teacher is unlikely to be the the problem party in the learning environment. Primary socialization did not prepare these children to be receptive to learning.. If you grew up in a home where play-time was never educational, then your parents failed you. Parents/guardians have a duty to nurture the natural curiosity expressed by their pre-school aged children. It is sad to see a sterile homelife mold an elementary school student uninterested in the world around them. If the only way a child wants to learn is through an audiovisual experience, then their attitude toward learning and school required adjustment. Good on Fact Freast for using this YT entertainment platform to finally entice the uninterested into learning about history. BTW - this video is focused on the socioeconomic aspects of q specific period in history.

Forty thieves likely have after Ali baba and forty thieves we have this gang in our Arabic tales one thousand and one night- were formed in 1825 and all eyed to be first known as oldest newyork criminal street gang . Thieves consisted primarily of Irish immigrants and Americans who terrorized five point neighborhood of 19 th century Manhattan.

It's amazing how far America has come. People think it's bad today, haha. Listen to this story, if you are under 30. Take a look at what you could have been born into, instead you get the world at your hands and still complain it's not enough. I have the were with all to understand every generation has their problems, and not every person is the same. I find that younger people today have no idea about history, at all. I'm not sure if it's schools systems agenda or laziness? Maybe 1% of the people today in America could survive the 1800's. I'm not one of them. Just be grateful your alive and have a life if YOU choose.

@@lemontadams3029 we do have some terrifying mass killings…but they’re not happening to a majority of the population and despite the perception , they don’t happen every day… even some of the poorest in todays society here in America have it better than the poor back then..the quality of living overall is better..but it won’t seem that way of your tuned into the “it bleeds, it leads” media, or social media 24/7

My father was part of the "Bowery boys" gang back then. He wrote a book about those times.

I watched a movie about gang battles maybe from that time, but I forgot the name of the movie. The battles were with knives. Does anyone have any tips?

Wow... This societal behavior sounds exactly like what's going on these days. Guess history really does repeat itself

Jason, I researched all of this and gave Seminar's on it for SUNY ALBANY when I was working on it. I actually have many of the books. I only wish the public knew all about this as they began since the 60's to think that Black people invented this behavior. I have some of the books that I treasure. But no one was ever interested in this history. Glad you are putting it on Face Book. These are the recent ancestors of many of today's so called middle class.

If you ran this city what would you do to fix it? Or would you point at someone else and blame them like we do today? We need to bring back solutions to problems instead of pointing each others out for decades.
