also a very good point about the fence. a girl I know had a horse that pinned her between a fence and himself, broke her arm because of how she had it but it was her own damn fault. she likes to think she's all tough shit but doesn't realize the power horses have. she tried to have the horse put down for it but my dad took him instead. absolutely GREAT horse. she just didn't know how to handle it

I'm a lesbian feminazi. The stuff he says about women infuriates me, but I just try to ignore it and I get it--Generally speaking, women tend to be more emotional, due to biology (more oxytocin circulating through the body than men.) This can cause a natural reaction to be more emotional when dealing with horses and sometimes treating them as human children instead of thousand pound prey animals. Being physically smaller, sometimes we feel the need to resort to methods that might leverage our control (e.g. stud chains and metal bits.) This is just my personal opinion. I'm not a neuroscientist, but I listen to a lot of episodes of the Huberman Lab podcast and do a lot of reading about neuroscience. I actually learned something new by watching this video. I never knew about the hip lock. Being open-minded, ignoring the stuff I don't like and picking up on the stuff I do can help me learn extra tools and methods that can help improve my horsemanship. He is pretty detail-oriented and observant of horse and human behavior. That's why I watch his videos.

Not only is the fence a little too low, the horizontal boards were nailed up on the wrong side of the posts. They should be on the inside of the posts in a round pen. Anyway, that's one sturdy looking horse! He looks like he's got some draft in him. He's packed solid. Too bad he's horribly confused. No fault of his own.

I don't think the horse looks confused at all. She looks like she's full of pent up energy and just needs to burn it off. If he lunged her, she'd be like a rocket moving around him and could potentially hurt herself.

@hg xob Wrong. That is definitely a Walker. Some lines are heavily built. You wouldn't see that kind of movement in a draft cross. The breeder I worked for had a few that were that heavily built, and moved just like that.

Rick, I want you to know that I'm a woman, and I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. It's been a long time since I was crippled, and all I can do now is feed a horse a carrot while I sit in my wheelchair. But when I was a kid, I had horses, and I didn't have anyone to teach me anything. I somehow blundered through, no doubt with the aid of a battalion of angels! But you can learn a lot just by watching your horse, spending time with them, and seeing how they react. What you say is just common sense. I made plenty of mistakes---you're teaching me just how many---but my little mares were kind and forgiving. I owe them so much. This is a great video. I learned about not wrapping my hand through the halter when I got my feet stomped because I was back by the shoulder trying to lead my pony instead of up where I should have been.

Some videos have no right. There is no point in him talking about good things because they don’t need to be fixed. The bad things do. If he doesn’t mention it, he finds it to not be a problem. But in videos like this one, this guy is putting himself and the horse in a dangerous position, and he is not doing right. He is wrong out of ignorance.

FeminNazis.....ok that made me laugh. I am horrified by 2 things: 1. is the way this guy in the video is handing this horse. I am no pro but when he runs backward he is drawing the horse into him and as you can see the horse struck out at him twice (playful or not it will still hurt). 2. that people are more offended by the name calling than they are by the way this guy is handling this horse. Rick has always spoken this way. And IF it makes you think before you get near a horse it has served its purpose. I am a woman.....I have done some of these "stupid" things he talks about.....and I am willing to deal with his manner (remember nobody is forcing you to listen to him) because I believe that I can learn valuable things Rick's critics

In many ways training horses IS like training a puppy. (1) you have to set limits and enforce them (2) positive training works far better and creates a much stronger relationship and finally (3) you spell love “time”. It takes time together and time training to build relationship and get to know and respect each other. Sure they differ significantly- but first step is to understand an animal.

I had a horse that would try to walk up my back when I led her. My trainer (woman) was very harsh with her and jerked the halter down and hit the horse's chest with the lead rope. This is a Tennesse walking horse (probably a young one as in 3 or 4 years old) and he is probably trying to show her flat walk/running gate... BADLY! I agree that this abusive handler shouldn't handle any horse and I think it's a good example of what not to do. Obviously this horse is very very gentle by nature otherwise she would have shown him. Rick I like your video's but you shouldn't judge books by it's covers. I had a job in the horse world (jumping) but quit because I grew tired and angry of the massive abuse that is going on. mostly by man who think they can solve problems by strength or let the horse preform better by rubbing dieselfuel on their legs so they would jump better and shooting them up with tranqualizer so they can still handle the hurting horse, instead of propper training. also because there is a time pressure because owners want the horses to preform from nothing to the top in 3 months so they can sell the horse again for big bucks. it's called cowBOYing up for a reason. in the recreation world of horses I completley agree with you that it's mostly pink wearing girls who don't have a clue but on the other hand their trainers are often males, so who's responsable.... so I think it's an equal draw with stupid ppl who say they love horses. every time I see a new video I also hear more anger towards stupid ppl. or better said les respect. You doing a great job showing what can go wrong and why but ppl who don't know can't do well can they, and they will learn the hard way and the horse has to pay. What I miss in your videos more and more is telling ppl what they should do instead. the newest videos sound to me as taking out on ppl, poor horse bad people, but you don't tell anymore what they should do instead. please put that back in the videos so we can all learn from it aswell, for the good of the horses. I don't mind you issueing on ppl just don't let it dominate the video.

my mare lives in a large paddock with about twenty other mares and geldings at a trail center. She only comes in when she is being worked or being fed then goes back out into the paddock. The only time she has been in a stall is when we go to the local show grounds for pony club. she gets to run and play and do whatever she wants and is very relaxed when she comes in, I don't believe in keeping horses locked up in stalls, they can't run around and stretch their legs. Besides, it's not that hard to just brush dirt off.

This situation is bad right from the beginning. The horse is making a point of keeping its head higher than his which means it does not accept him as the boss. Might as well turn around and go back into the stable. The high head also means it is nervous and upset. A normal head set is lower. The lead shank should be held loosely and the horse should follow his motions even though the person on the ground remains at the shoulder. Some time in the round pen free lunging perhaps. Also given the size of the horse it should be more relaxed - I wonder how it was raised.

Reminds me of when people play tug of war with a puppy with a rope toy. But this puppy is wayyy bigger and it’s a metal chain instead of a rope. Very out of control and very stupid. If they just let him run around himself and show off his beautiful strides it would have been much more impressive. But they need to fix that fence to better contain a large powerful horse . I’m sure the guy would have no idea how to get the horse back since the horse probably rarely gets out enough and it would turn into a game of tag lol

Okay I am not hating but I am just going to say that most the time it is not about being a women or a man but like my trainer says most women think that horses just want love and affection and they do need love but they also need leadership and respect because they are herd animals and that is what they are born needing! Sure yo can love your horse and pet them and play with them and everything but you also need to give them rules so they know what you want, I find a horse that has more strict rules is a lot happier because they know what you want and know what to expect if they do something you don't want.

Beautiful horse, looks young. Love it when he practically squats and bounces up like LET'S play. Foolish leader who needs more training than the horse.

I think you have some hangups, but you're absolutely correct about the common sense factor in not using chain and proper behavior in handling abilities for horses. But really dude, after a moment of making your point, you sound like a Dreamworks character. Uneducated men and women are fully why the animals take the blame when they aren't cared for properly. Thanks for the mostly informative vid!

i was always taught to never put ur hand anyplace a horse canot see it .... i lay a palm on there nuzzel n say "come boy" no leads no chains. Once they follow, u can move hand back n brush them on the body. Im australia n picked 38 ticks off my neighbourse horse ... he hated them but loved me and my rotthwiler.

poor boy was an X race horse ... my rottwhiler was so in love with him and they used to nuzzle each other. fact i live on a fruit orchid might help, apples n plumbs n peaches (de seeded) I think i was the 1st person he'd known that would spend houres combing him n removing ticks. I tryed to sit on him once without a saddle n he went stiff ... i felt the bad vibes n said ... its ok m8 i wont do that again.

I think ur video was right on. And, very glad your not worried about snow flakes. Keep making great video's... I learn tons watching people who actually know something about horse behavior..

The main thing I was watching was how the horse was moving. Seemed to me it just wanted to play and 'prance'. I read a lot of comments below and saw people were saying it was a Tennessee walker. Perhaps that is what I was seeing? Beautiful horse. I would have loved to knock the guy down and just let the horse run and be a horse. I bet it would be jumping and prancing all over the place feeling its oats! A couple of times the horse reminded of me of how dogs get down on their front legs to play. This horse seemed to do that a couple of times and I just loved watching this horse move about!

Another informative (and hilarious voice over) IF ONLY everyone could take the time to get themselves well and truly GORED because when you 'think like a horse' EVERYTHING changes. Thanks again for everything you do for horses - I was taught as a kid by barnwitches and was a fully paid up member of the 'pink panty brigade' but not anymore...Buddy...Mr T...Rick...you are THE BEST 💙 💙 💙

mate i agree with you totally, i ride racehorses and one day went to a livery yard, they had this lovely palomino horse and according to the owner he was crazy, stubborn and unbearable, apparentky TOTALLY UNBREAKABLE, i Bought the horse for 300pounds, after 3 days, 1day lunging, second day trotting and cantering on his back,3RD DAY he was jumping small jumps. all in the handling, BY the end of the week i sold him for 2,500 pounds. Unbreakablemy ass he was spoiled rotten by the woman.iv nothing at all against women but most women i say are far too gentle and give in too easily. this is my girlfriends page so its not me in the picture.

Rick I didn't realize until I listened to what you said in this video, how deeply meaningful you're information is! I'm gentle with animals just by nature but you're understanding is really impressive, especially with horses. Damn, I see this guy popping the rope & chain and my instinct is to beat his ass but you think about how he just doesn't know and I see you're right. It's hard to think about how badly people treat animals and have any sympathy for them. I gotta give you props for that!

LoL Does it make me a stupid woman that I thought the horse was super cute. The fact that he's learned the lessons and seems to be really wanting direction and to be with the handler seems to say that he's a great horse. He seems to be making a lot of eye contact and I would even say hesitant respect wanting direction but he's all over the place because all he's getting is confusion. Poor horse. He looks like a real cutie. Just needs better direction. LoL

I Think the problem is that we have no hands-on teachers in todays horse World. It´s become the Blind Leading The Blind, where as the horsemen of yester years worked with horses everyday for their livelyhood and could pass their knowlage on to the next generation. This guy had no old-timer too show him the way and has to figure out how horses work on his own. Posting the Rick Gore Site to him could be helpfull if this Young man intends to work with horses.

Everyone getting offended by your gender talk, but I think it’s damn hilarious. People just can’t take that sense of humour, because they get too offended too easily. I tend to find those kinds of people the most egotistical, because they cannot take criticism and aren’t willing to learn how to better themselves.
