#AmericaNeedsFarmers
iowANFarmer, Ben Van Roekel, is a 2nd generation farmer in southern Iowa. His goal on KZbin is to showcase what young farmers have to offer to the agricultural community. He hopes to give the general public a glimpse into what life is like on an American corn, soybean, and hay operation. The channel will focus on farming equipment, repairs, precision ag, and daily operations on the farm. Join him in his daily trials and tribulations in the changing agricultural environment.

I have a trimble guidance system on a deere 4 wheel drive, had same issues of a mind of its own. I replace a short cable, about 18 inches in length that connects to the articulation/direction of travel sensor, located on the rear end of tractor. This solves my problems for a couple years, then replace it again. Goodluck and stay safe with the anh4, i use it as well.

When I was a kid growing up in Houston there was a tanker truck full of anhydrous ammonia that fell off a interstate overpass onto another freeway. Instantly there was a cloud from the 7000 gallons of pure ammonia. 6 people were killed almost instantly and another couple hundred ended up in the hospital with burns to their skin, eyes, and even worse, their lungs. Many of them were disabled for the remainder of their lives. A seventh victim died a couple years later. She never was able to recover from the damage to her body. It’s some very nasty stuff. Useful but dangerous. In addition to agriculture, it’s used in a lot of industrial processes. You still see the tanker trucks hauling it around Houston all the time. Hopefully they are more careful.

Because of probably a warming climate and warmer soils coupled with safety issues very few farms if any , here in the UK use anhydrous nowadays. I have not seen any equipment now for more than 35yrs! Most farms apply urea prills or crystals in cold/cool weather followed by applications, according to crop need, of ammonium nitrate or sulphate often with added sulphur. There is a steady growth of folks using liquid fertilizers which are are hauled in as a concentrate and the farmer dilutes them down for use. Many use ready diluted products where temporary lagoons (that look like massive children's play pools with floating collars which truck drivers empty their truck into. (The real beauty of the lagoons is they can be setup in any smooth level locations, eg grass, in or near where the product is required and speeds up application as little or no road travel needed. They are all applied by suitably modified / constructed sprayer type machines to limit corrosion on kit. The big recent development is the use of more and more waste products like sewage cake and food waste solids, animal waste (both liquid and solids) and stackable bio-waste mainly from green recycling or digester plants.

It seems like the UK has a lot of solutions to fertilizer needs. I watch Tom P videos, and love how his farm is a perfect cycle. Grass feeds cows, Cows make milk and Waste, Milk feeds humans, Waste feeds grass. Perfect.

So as a farm manager for a living I have to ask (not all the way through the video) how are guys sitting. Some here in eastern Nebraska bought their needs early at 700-760/ton, some bought as applied at 1400-1550/to. IF the coop would sell and some are rolling the dice

You most likely have a can bus voltage issue. If the can sees to much or to little voltage it will start to kick things off to recover. Auto steer would usually be affected first. The John Deere’s were notorious for having the terminator in the ISO connector off the rear of the tractor fail due to water, manure etc. I’m not sure if your case is set up similar. You’ll need to monitor can voltage high/low while it acts up. Good luck.

Ben, what would happen if farmers left the equipment in the shed for a year? If you all could ever agree o do it. It would be nice to have the shoe on the other foot for once. How can farmers say a collective NO when you are all so independent. If you can't feed your corn properly I see higher corn prices/ higher consumer prices. Oh yeah! I think the National Farmers Organization tried to promote a similar idea of getting all farmers to not sell grain in an attempt to raise prices back during the 1980's farm crisis. It didn't work, just impossible to get enough farmers to agree and stick with the plan. Too independent in a way.

Might be worth looking into crimson clover for cover and between the rows either alone or mixed in with the rye.

@JeremyStyninger
@JeremyStyninger 2 жыл бұрын
@@iowANFarmer Yes, corn. I was experimenting with the crimson clover and annual rye last spring in the backyard, alone and mixed together using the rye as a nurse crop. All did a good job of suppressing the weeds. I got to thinking about other uses and came up with the idea of using just the clover between the cornrows. The crimson clover sprouted real early in the spring, but didn't much like the hot weather and died down by end of June. So, could it be possible to leave the CC until it dies off on its own, feeding and suppressing the whole time until about when the corn is high enough to do its own suppressing with shade? And then re-seed itself for the fall? Seems like there are many possibilities to be explored. Of course, CC can be grazed and bailed and I think there may be some potential to spread seed in the fall, have it start growing first thing in the spring, then cut and bail whatever results from that right before planting corn. CC could also be used in the spring, bailed in early summer, and then the ground could be tiled in the summer followed by tillage and a fall crop of winter wheat or something else I can't think of. That may be an option for getting tile in rather than the narrow and fickle windows before planting and after harvest.

@@iowANFarmer We have a small 80 acre farm that has been in the family since 1930s. Currently we share crop it. Talking with the gentleman that share crops with us, soybeans this coming year and then actually looking at wheat and hay the following year and then back into splitting the acreage to corn and soybeans. We keep the farm because it is paid for, provides us with a place to go and play, plus gives me an excuse to have a small tractor. Growing up, we had cows, pigs, and chickens, but as we all got jobs that required more hours and less availability for the farm, we got rid of the livestock and went to share cropping.

I know we decided to plant more wheat and beans and less corn next year. With more wheat we can plant double crop beans after it so we will make up for the less corn . That being said we still will grow over 2000 acres of corn. We choose to use urea and then sidress 28 percent nitrogen on if needed . That quadtrac would make a great planter tractor for corn or beans. We run planter with both of our quadtracs and they both have 36 inch tracks. Most of the time our 500 runs planter while the 580 runs vertical tillage. I think that you need to run greenstar on it that's what we do with no issues We tried the ag leader with lots of little issues as well. Great video keep up the good work !

The planting tractor also has auto steer and doesn't work any better. About the end of the season dealer finally gets it running right. System hasn't made me a Nicole yet and I have about 30000 dollars tied up in it.. I have auto steer on the strip till fertilizer tractor and on the planting tractor. Hi Ben, just finished watching Sonne Farms from South Dakota. They were applying granular fertilizer, but the interesting fact was they had soil tests etc done to evaluate where the crop needed the less or more fertiliser. This way there expenditure on fertilize was destvalue as well their crop also benefited by the best practice of applying the fertiliser. Are you able to do that with the Hydros? I am a Rancher and Farmer from down under, love your vids, if I could vote 100 extra I would.
