I stand corrected! Thanks for the lesson Admiral! :)

Ok, so put it into practice and show us in DW! lol Need more DW content

And if this constitutes your 'back of napkin' approach, then I'd hate to see your considered, accurate one! lol. Amazing work Charlie, truly a blessing to the Sub Sim Community. Bravo!

In the instruction manuel, it is recommended that you take a 100° angle to escape from the detection cone of a torpedo coming from the front. So for a torpedo coming from the back i assume it is a 80° turn. Where is the truth ?
@FPSchazly Жыл бұрын
always do 100-120. it's a balance between completely going perpendicular to the torpedo and completely parallel (it will likely catch up to you). perfectly perpendicular isn't terrible but going at that angle helps a little bit more. the data I go over in this video shows that

There is something I don't understand.. You say the angle is relative to the torpedo heading yet your drawing is the other way around, the 135 angle is to the bearing the torpedo comes from. You are making a 45° left relative to the torpedo heading. A 135° evasion, assuming the torpedo is going north would be either SE or SW, yet you are drawing a NW heading. Running away from the torpedo gives you more time to evade and therefore to increase distance but also gives more time to the torpedo to lock on. If the torpedo can track you in passive mode then you are making its work easier. Picture a triangle representing the detection cone of the torpedo, if we extend the sides of that triangle to infinity which heading will give you the shortest route to exit the triangle considering that the triangle will be moving towards your initial position. I haven't worked the numbers but it feels like a 135° to the torpedo heading should get you faster outside from the detection cone than any heading closer to the torpedo heading. Meaning that to evade a torpedo going north you should go heading 135. Obviously that'll work only if the distance between OS and the torpedo is significant or if it's activation point is close to your present position.

i misspoke. if you ran 135 to torpedo heading, you'd be presenting an even bigger solid angle than the 90 degree sidestep.
@FPSchazly6 жыл бұрын
so 135 to torpedo heading (running kinda towards the torpedo), you'd basically be giving it a broadside look at your submarine, completely beam on

snaking torpedoes can increase their effective search cone because of the snaking back and forth, and the mark 48 pretty much has a 180 degree search cone

How do you determine the range of incoming torpedo? is there time to do TMA on it? or maybe through bottom bounce?
@GravityWave0076 жыл бұрын
I'd usually just count the seconds until it hit the hull and make a guess as to the speed. 45 knots is close.
@lupahole6 жыл бұрын
Its hardly useful information if you learn it when you are hit :P I am talking about knowing its range as it approaches.
@FPSchazly6 жыл бұрын
first, as soon as you see a torpedo heading towards you, start evading and get out of the way haha maybe countershoot down the bearing. then if you got some free time, you could try some TMA on the torp or get the autocrew to do some. you may be able to see it on an active ping but mainly just get out of the way. your main way of knowing how far a torp is is knowing how far away the dude who shot it is

So in cold waters, where you can see the torps exact position on the map, you have some unrealistic voodoo happening, right?

Yes lol

You should do this for Cold Waters, could help alot.

do what for Cold Waters, torp evasion tutorials, or do this technique in Cold Waters?

there's already a bunch of stuff out there from Jive Turkey. if you're facing torpedoes from enemy submarines, this video is still valid in Cold Waters. Cold Waters is easy cuz you can just keep making knuckles or dropping counter measures until you evade the torpedo.
