This one was right up my alley Dan. I am in the process of experimenting with making some oils and butters and documenting each batch until I find "the one", and then move on to making other scents with that carrier combo. Sterilization is key! Just like when you make beer, everything must be sanitized and super clean.

I followed scubas video exactly and have made some really nice butters. For me, I have done the math and it Saves a lot of money..... especially for guys that have the ability to grow a big beard but don't always have the big bank account to buy the big company products. Very cool Jeremy! Most guys do lose money, because they do not stick with it and have a lot of trail and error. The intial cost is impossible to overcome unless you get it down and stay with it long term. If you do that, you are spot on!

Dan, I appreciate this video so much! I researched diy beard oils and products for the last week for so many hours and NOT one of them mentioned these dangers!! I am shocked with all of the DIY out there that this was never mentioned, not even on videos about mixing essentials or even cleaning the amber bottles! I spent nearly $300.00 in the last week purchasing all of the necessary equipment and supplies only to find out I could be seriously hurt. I returned the items possible today and last night to recoup some of the funds spent to purchase products from reputable companies. I read part of an article last night after watching this where some lady was suing a company after receiving life long scars from burns due to the application of essential oils. Man you ARE a LIFESAVER! Thank you so much again! If I could heart this video instead of just liking it I would haha! I look forward to learning more from you! #STAYHEALTHY

Just on time Dan C Bearded, I live in India and wanted to make my own beard butter from DIY KZbin videos, due to the fact that many local start-up companies sell fake, low quality products just to make money. However, in the U.S., UK, Canada, EU, Australia, you would get good branded products but would cost a fortune for me to buy it and to get it shipped to India. For e.g. a jar a Detroit beard butter would cost me ₹4,000 - ₹5,000 if I were to buy it in India. What I'm waiting for is these awesome companies like Detroit, Uncle Donnie's etc to start their franchise here. Thank you so much for this awesome thought provoking video. You're the best!

Been making my own stuff since I started my beard journey about two years ago.it can be a "rabbit hole' when it comes to fragrances (wanting to change up scents),but you can't forget that you buying bowls,spatulas spoons,etc are one time cost for the most part. Yes you will run out of supplies,but so do those big (and not so big) companies,but you restock. And last but not least,most of the small companies you review started at "the kitchen table". End of rant,but I do enjoy your channel (as of now the only beard related channel I'm sub'd to).

I appreciate the sub and support! I would say the companies with staying power go about it from the start in a much different way than your average "kitchen table". Beard Octane for example launched the LLC and company over a year and a half before ever selling a single product. They dove into the research, the procedures, and most importantly... laws and regulations. Same with Fable, and many others. There are tons if "kitchen table" companies, but many fall off or hover around the hobby category. Which is totally fine, there is nothing wrong with that. There are levels to it though

I've been making my own beard products for almost a year and I've never had anything bad happen. But then again. I studied for almost a year before making my own beard stuff. And im still learning and your right dan c if someone isn't careful they can get bad burns on there face and hands and even if it doesn't burn there face and hands right away the sun might react bad with the oil are product depending on the ratio it was mixed. Been watching your videos for a while and never felt the need to comment. However at the begin of this video I was alike "lol he makes money from selling of products, of course he is trying to scare people away from making their own." But man did you ever have good solid indisputable points. Price was the biggest factor that kept me from making my own cause after pricing all the oils I wanted in "my oil", I was like "I can try many different brands, blends and scents and still not touch the cost of making my own.". So for me price was the major reason that I didn't think it was worth it but you touch on that very well along with danger of using wrong fragrance oils. I completely agree the best bet for someone wanting to play around with their own blend is making it with carrier oils. But even then you are going to really spend a lot for say 3 different carrier oils when you can buy oils with far more and often better oils cheaper. Great video brother!

Well spoken, Dan! When founding the company, I spent close to a thousand dollars to get started the right way. With R&D, I probably threw more than half of that money right in the trash for every reason you could possibly imagine. Looking back at it, I have so much I could share about that journey. I had a lot to learn before getting cost and price where it made sense and made about $50 a week in the first year and a half, or so. I couldn’t believe it paid anything at all, those were difficult and amazing days. What Dan is saying here, in summary, is to do your due diligence because your health is involved which is more important than your wallet. But why not ensure both are in the pros column by doing some time researching? From company to an individual, it’s vital and well worth your time.

Listen to my reviews and videos lol I never hide anything. Ask the companies directly, ask me, go with your gut. Are there unsafe ones out there? Strong yes, but I do not try those. If I do, I let you know and learn from my mistake

@@kentuckybeardsman buying in bulk matters, and have access to bigger suppliers matters. When companies buy larger amounts of the quality ingredients, it is MUCH less expensive. Simple economics. For one person to make in amounts of small personal use, it is much more expensive.

If you happen to have GC/MS tested essential oils at hand for aromatherapy, it goes a long way in reducing the cost of DIY beard oils. Otherwise, it would take at least 10-20 batches for the cost to break even....

I enjoy making my own beard products, I agree, use safe ingredients and be as sterile as possible if you want your products to last. If you only make one batch, you will lose money, but once you hit on the right formula, your cost per batch is significantly cheaper to make your own. I only make 1 scent, after much trial and error to get it right. That's the difficult part of making your own beard products. I have no intention of selling beard products, as with anything, once big brother (Gov) is involved, the fun is gone.

I've been living in Poland, and here, the costs of beard products are typically almost double than what it would cost in the States, and the salaries here are much much lower as well. Due to this, I had to start making my own oils/butters/balms because it's just offensive what they charge here, and I can't justify paying such prices. Having said that, I've found that the quality of products here seem to be far superior, and in the years that I've been bearded, my DIY (well, actually my Wife is the magician who makes most of the stuff) products have served me extremely well!

Solid information here! Here’s the thing, in my opinion: Everyone ultimately has the right to make the decision to make their own stuff. But please-before you do, DO YOUR RESEARCH. Take the time to find skin grade scents. Study the adverse reactions that are possible. Learn the proper technique in diluting scents. Learn about the specific gravity of different carrier oils. Research the shelf life of your ingredients. Find out if the product will break down in light. Understand that there are going to be a ton of variables that will go into it. And, if that’s your thing, blaze on! But, like Dan said, be super careful and refrain from handing it over to others! Get the proper documentation if you think that this hobby is something you want to pursue. Protect yourself legally. No one is trying to take that away from you or to keep a piece of the pie from you. That’s small thinking. Small thinking=small results.

I’m still skeptical. The beard balm I like is about 25 after shipping and handing for 2oz, I made 10 2oz containers for about 50. That is including the tins, oils and fragrance. Another 15 if you add in the glass container for double boiling and an additional couple of fragrances. I still have enough to do another batch of 15 or so. I would have spent that on 3 2oz containers of the stuff I normally would buy. Maybe I need to find something cheaper, but it really is not that hard to warm up some oils and poor them into some containers. If you are paranoid about the scented oils, you could just not use them. I looked for stuff that said it was specifically used for soap, beard or lotions. Anyhow I will add up all the numbers and compare again, with two kids of my own though I would definitely rather buy the products vs make due to how busy I am.

Oil is simple to make. Balm ain't that dangerous to make basic chem 101. Now when it comes to scenting it okay that might be the hardest part. Great video since most ppl don't have the chem experience.

It's much easier to justify the cost if I can potentially make some money. That being said, I've sunk a ton of money into it so far. It's not for the faint of heart. I have already made my own and I got pretty good at the texture from balm to butter. Just the scent ts are pricey and usually go with eucalyptus and peppermint to make stuff for my wife and son for their eczema. I use atleast 4 to 5 types of carriers and atleast two types of butters. Wemon have been ahead of us in the oil and butter game. Helped with my wife knowing what's up. But I like to support certain companies and enjoy their scents. But I make a strong balm since hardly companies don't make good balms that hold to be honest. Plus it isn't money wasted if your making just oils you get your money back atleast by the 4th time you have done it. Talk to people that actually share the info on how to make it. Some companies are cool and let you have an idea on how they make their stuff and others just wont let you because you may be competition later. It's cool to try especially when you waste like 50 bucks on a trio from one company oil balm and butter. Good luck to everyone that tries and I understand why not try since it's more convenient to just buy it from well informed, clean and hard working companies.

I like your videos. Been growing my beard for a year now.. I make my own, I use food grade cocoa butter, coconut oil,and butter, shea butter and kokum and mango. Carrier oils. No fragrance, because as you said, some burn. I make my own mostly because of no additives, no chemicals..100% pure. I did lots of research. Keep my utincels separate and clean. Experimenting is the key always skin/sun test and you should be safe . Take any essential oil or fragrance oil put it on the softest skin on your body and chill in the sun if there's jo reaction there most likely won't be when it's diluted in carrier oils or butters I've been making my own products for 2 years and get all my oils and essentials from a skin company and I've never had an issue I think when people start cutting corners that's where the problem comes in .

@Dan C Bearded I've learnt that I am the only guideline🤣 ofcourse to make to sell etc there's alot that goes into it but all you need to make for yourself is some common sense , when I made my first few batches I actually just used decent cologne stuck to 1% never had a skin issue to this day and I'm half ginger so if it works for me it should work for anyone maybe albinos will need more thorough testing🥲

Good info dan. Good point with the photosensitive effects. I have to disagree with few points brother..the cost effectiveness and cleanliness. I started making my own oils, balms and solid colognes. To me it's a fun hobby and I like making things I use. And buying oils at like 8-16oz and using that to blend in a 1oz dropper bottle??? Gonna last a long time. SANITATION: something I honestly did not give much thought of. Thank you. BUT..new dropper bottles, new droppers, new syringes, the use of 90% alcohol...boiling containers following guidelines for canning. Hows that missing sanitation. If I can boil something and use that container to eat something out of a year later, good enough to put me at ease. Great video though brother.

I was just going to combine well known beard oils such as Honest Amish with 100% Argan oil in a slightly larger bottle (around 4oz). I think that this would probably be okay and it would just be for me so there would be no legal ramifications.

I bought some cinnamon oil from a health food holistic place, it etched the pyrex plastic measuring cup. Imagine what it would of done to my skin! That being said, I've gotten good results with vanilla and almond extract dashed in a 1/2 tablespoon of coconut oil. All human grade consumable.

I did not know the sun could react with certain oils and such, makes sense too. I always find some random hobby and go at it full force, sparing no expense. It's just that, "what if I could do this for a living and get out of the corporate world" mind set. I have already spent about $200 on ingredients and supplies and just made my first balm yesterday and guess what, it's way too waxy. There goes one tin, couple TBSP of bees wax, couple different butters and some oils. Though it smells awesome (Vanilla Tobacco), got that going for me so far. Your video was an eye opener and the thought of a lawsuit is just f-ing scary. Thanx for the video!!!

I knew I liked making my oils without any fragrance at all for some reason. I wear solid cologne and don't want it to clash with beard fragrances. I'll stick with jojoba oil, emu oil, fractionated coconut oil and argan oil. I make it only for myself and my son. Your videos are so helpful for me. My beard is now 1 year and 3 months old. Sometimes its tuff having a long beard in Texas. Kinda like the old western days look. Its white and silver and I get amazing comments all the time. I don't know how to explain or ask this... Is there a line of using not enough essential oil vs using too much per batch? Example: 2 drops of sandalwood vs 10 drops of sandalwood in a 30ml bottle. Like 2 drops not be beneficial enough because it would be too diluted. Thanks

I was going to do DIY oils, to save money but felt it was too much effort. I do use pure cold press Jojoba oil, not just for my beard hear I use it for rashes and other issues my skin may have. Glad I watched this video to confirm my thoughts on making my own products, cheers.

I pour 100% pure emu oil into my palm, about the size of a nickel, put a drop of pure lanolin in the middle of it, rub my hands together and rub it into my face. Nothing fancy needed.

Good video very informative buy my diy consists or purchased coconut oil so all I do is because my hands are washed after bath or shower is scoop a little oil out of the jar and melt in my hands and rub into beard and skin. I have never had a problem but if you have a nut alergy may be a problem.

Disagree on the money - I spent $100 bucks on carrier oils and a couple of exxential oils, plus two 25ml dropper bottles. Le Labo's 60ml beard oil cost me $89, a "standard" 25ml bottle of hemp seed oil- based beard oil costs me $25 including shipping. I worked out I will get at least 20 25ml bottles of beard oil from my ingredients. If I bought 20 of the hemp-based oils that would be $500, so I am saving at least $400 by DYI-ing my beard oil. I'd guess you might be right on the butters and balms, but don't really know. I buy that stuff from Professor Fuzzworthy and probably always will. If you have even a semi-decent supplier of the oils they can advise on reactivities, skin sensitivities etc if you tell them what you are up to. If they can't then you should go to someone who can. I think the trick, like with anything, is to be informed and do your research first (and I am sorry, but watching 15 how-to-make-your-own-beard-oil videos on youtube is not classified as proper research...).

For sure, but unfortunately the majority of people looking into DIY are just simply doing it to say money. They aren’t doing proper research like you suggest. They aren’t buying from semi decent suppliers. They are almost always buying from Amazon. Getting stuff that is in plastic bottles that were sitting for months in a hot storage facility. If you know what you’re doing, it is absolutely the best way to save money and get products you love. Most people just don’t know what they’re doing though.

So let's keep it simple... fragrance oils used in soap are skin safe. If my fragrance says 25% and my oil weight is 100ml is use 20-25ml of fragrance at max..... sanitization is easy at home use 91-99% alcohol. Losing money, your buying garbage 99% of the time when you but something at walmart. I spent less then 100$ to buy everything and I can try to make 50+ batches. Fingers crossed, also just got the license in canada.

Idk, you do the science before the math you might just end up spending a ton more money compared to if you buy the available oils already on the market. Not only is the market very saturated and hard to get started in but the cost to get a few different carrier oils is far greater than to buy a few batches of top tier beard oils.

So, I want to experiment with all carrier oils. I want to find the best nutritional mixes and am curious to see how each one directly affects beard and skin overall. I've watched the carrier oil playlist and found each oil to be very unique, and each has various beneficial properties. I know some you should maybe not apply by themselves do to strength in odor or could clog pours. Everyone is different though and it would be very nice to find or create something that benefits me the best and possibly others if I were to enjoy and become good at it in long run but just small time thinking for myself right now.

How do we know the small batch companies are doing it right and following all that you say/recommend. Lots of faith being put upon them. I would like to see them be more transparent with their process. I have seen one major small batch live on IG just randomly mixing scents/oils and then marketing it for a charity cause. 🧐. Lots of faith being put on these people to do it “right” and no real way to confirm they are.

Not because I am a hater but because I want to be as sure as possible and while this is a great community there are people that will always look for a easy way out. Beard oil sure but it’s pretty serious stuff...you are rubbing this stuff on your face. I had one company (one of the biggest small batch) that their product made my skin glowing red and I had a reaction. I asked the owner to be 100% open with ingredients and got some major push back. Now I only trust 1-2 companies that have willingly shared more then they should just so I can be safe.

Great video! Most everything I do is DIY. I tend to really dive into new things, buying the equipment, tools and supplies for new adventures. It can get expensive but if you enjoy it....go for it and give it a try. As for beard products I’ll leave those to the pros...there are so many great companies making great products to try.

I do unscented because I really don’t want to devote time, money, or risk into it. I don’t want myself to burn or anyone on my Etsy. There’s other ways you can smell good, if your main concern over your beard oil is scent then you need to find a different way to smell good IMO

I've been pretty curious on the essential oil game...I found out long ago most brands weren't for topical use. I always speculated that at least a company like luxurious bastard most likely sources from independent essential oil dealers. My problem is I cannot find anyone that sells quality powerful oils like the luxurious blends, so my question to you is would you be able to recommend anyone to get skin grade quality essentials from? As a beard company who's current lineup is 100% essential oils, I'll chime in that you simply won't get the potency of scent that companies like the one you eluded to have, purely using Essential Oils (in safe amounts). You have to use skin-safe fragrance oils to achieve that

Kind of off topic but I got a question. Also asked Tyson and his community. I have been growing a beard since June 2019 and only used beard products at the start. Are they only for itch and slight hold? I get zero itch and I like the look of my beard without the shine. Is there anything I'm missing about these products? Btw love the channel you and Tyson got me into growing a beard. Especially enjoy the livestreams. Hey brotha! There is a lot of nourishment and health that cannot always been or felt right away. There some freaks of nature who has enough sebum oil and do not need products, but that is extremely rare. Unfortunately, so of the negative impacts cannot be seen or felt until it is too late. A common example would be split ends. Guys who do not properly take care of their beard will often develop split ends. There is nothing you can do to repair split ends, so you just have to trim and cut them off. Products help avoid that.

I’m am not currently thinking of making my own but there are a ton of good points in your video that I have never thought about, and I’m sure a lot of people haven’t either, especially about the different essential and fragrance oils. I bet a lot of people would’ve just gone on amazon and gotten cheap essential and fragrance oils and thrown them in their carrier oils and slapped it on their face without doing their proper research about why is skin, and face safe, etc. definitely a great video for anyone thinking about DIY and a few things they should take into consideration before trying.
