My family came here (south aust) from Ireland in 1856, they were Protestant and once they were living here they became Lutheran. They were a tough, open-minded people with great senses of humour. I have to admit growing up around my great grandfather and hearing about back then (unfiltered and with a slight Irish lilt) was pretty cool. I have a generational love of the state so I see things from a different perspective. Yes, we have some horrific murders here, absolutely awful. But that doesn’t define all of us who live here. When we were described as the “Murder capital of the world”, that was meant per capita. Now our population is much larger, that no longer applies. There are good and bad in all places, rich or poor, it doesn’t matter especially now since Covid. South Australia really is a beautiful state with an interesting history. We often call it a giant country town where I live. Because someone always knows someone. It’s quite eerie sometimes.

I've watched lots of these shows and other crime documentaries and see that most serial killers stay within the range of the type of victims they choose and the "m.o." of how they murder them. Even now though, nothing I've seen, heard, or read has been worse than the true story of a serial killer from my home state of S.C. about Donald Henry "PeeWee" Gaskins. He was so determined of a killer, that he's the only person in state history to have ever pulled off a murder for hire while in prison. An inmate named Rudolph Tyner was the victim. Wilson Earl recorded his story and printed the book exactly as Gaskins told it and it reads as if he's talking directly to you and narrating it. It's called The Final Truth, and like I said, it's the most horrible, graphic thing I've ever read in my entire life and have seen nothing yet that I think would top the things he did! He never stuck with any certain type of victims nor method of murder. It's the type of thing that tends to make you wonder just how many people like that are out there in the world and how often you or someone you love have come close to an encounter with them!

Only 30+ years for most of these murders? I'm from Texas and we see justice a whole different way. The punishment should fit the crime. Also, it should not be used as a deterrent since most people use it as an excuse to change it. But I agree that prosicuters should be limited to not exploit justice for their own careers.

That's scary. A friend of mine, decades ago was married to a high up cop in Queensland. He used to bash the heck out of her whenever he drank. When she'd finally had enough, she tried to report him and nothing was done. She tried several avenues and none helped her. She was hiding from him when I met her. It's hard to have trust and faith in the police when you hear of these types of crime.

There was more sanity and commonsense in Medieval times then there is today - why do you think there is so much lawlessness and it keeps getting worse day by day?
