The reason you can walk on the acid is the same reason you could walk on lava when the switch was on in a previous troll level. The raised acid allows you to put a bullet bill cannon under the acid/lava, allowing you to walk on it. In the other level, activating the switch would activate blocks that would kill the bullet bill launchers. (You can see a bit of them spinning under the lava.) As someone who lives in a province where thousands of homes have to be demolished and rebuilt because of earthquake damage caused by people extracting gas from the earth, I'm not a fan of the expression "cooking with gas" meaning something positive.
