Thanks for the post. My 12v finally died after 10 years. Followed your instructions, and the low plastic pop rivet was a pain in the rear. I ended up going to OReilleys to get the special tool. After much wailing and gnashing of teeth I reverted to a pointy tip vice grip. After that horrible rivet was done the rest of the job went easy. I used forscan to reset the battery after replacing. Hopefully this will last another 10 years. We only have 40,000 miles on the car, so I expect we'll get another 10, unless I decide to go full electric by then. Anyhow, folks like you are what make youtube great! Thanks!

The battery on my daughter’s C-Max Energi conked out on her as she was working at a ski lodge. Zero power = pain to get to the battery because the lift gate cannot open. I was able to jump it, and once we drove back home, I changed out the battery. What a pain, but Dan’s steps are on point. I struggled with getting the new battery in because I didn’t fully remove the high voltage plug and ended up cracking the clip on it.

I bought a 2017 C-Max new 2-2018, and am thinking about replacing my battery now, not waiting longer. I live in Portland Oregon, where it typically never is over about 95F. (a few days a year). My original battery is not showing signs of age yet. But it looks like unscheduled replacement is not going to be easy, as doing it in my driveway proactively! Thanks for a great video! I am also thinking about replacing my high voltage plug in hybrid battery, especially if I can get a longer range replacement! 10 KW would be wonderful! The factory 7.5 KW used to have 18 miles of range, now down to 13 miles at 44,000 miles, 5 years of use. It was searching for a new hybrid battery that brought up this very great video!

I wonder if the 12 volt jack in the back of the vehicle couldn't be used as a sort of a jump start port. I know it's not going to handle the amperage needed to jumpstart from zero but it could perhaps be used to give a charge over 15 to 30 minutes to the 12 volt battery sufficient to start the car. (I know it doesn't actually directly start the engine.) I was thinking one of those handheld lithium jump start packs would be handy.
@gdvisions Жыл бұрын
Since your battery is working fine and it's cumbersome to replace, I'd wait until it is necessary and then use this awesome video as a guide. You will start to see warning signs of the battery weakening well before you are in dire circumstances. If you are concerned about being unable to start, you could get a small portable NOCO lithium battery pack to easily jump the C-Max using the grey negative post and red capped positive terminal, right side under the hood (or also jump anyone else in need you come across). You could also get a NOCO battery maintainer, which can top off your charge via the same remote battery posts and might buy you some time until one of your battery cells just gives out being able to hold a charge.

Hi there Dan! This video was a life saver. Our 2017 Cmax Energi just died without warning a couple of days ago. Based on my research it was most likely the low voltage battery. I swapped the battery with the help of our video which was perfect showing details of the exact steps I found confusing such as the orange plug and the battery life reset. Hey there, so I don't have a specific battery recommendation. I went to my local parts shop and put in the best battery they offered. I would suggest an AGM battery due to the fact that they don't have the same spillable acid inside. for the manual reset process, I didn't do it myself because I wanted to do it with my ODB scanner to see things actually changing. I would strongly suggest owning a scanner. For the cost it lets you see what is going on and diagnose all of your vehicles before you take them to the shop (if at all...)
@williamstanley75202 жыл бұрын
It looks as if the little tube the is supposed to vent the 12v battery was disconnected. On some batteries, the little port is on the positive side. That is right above the area where you found corrosion on the tie down bold and block. BTW, this seems like the perfect application for an absorbed glass mat battery; I don't know why they didn't use that, in which case tilting the battery during installation wouldn't be an issue.
@DansWay2 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right, an AGM battery would be much better for this location. In the video I did show the re-installation of the breather tube at 13:38. My replacement battery had holes on both sides, so I had to cap the one closest to the bumper.

Thanks for the comment. I haven't had a prblem with the interior panels myself. Are you saying that the clips don't stay engaged in the door even after being replaced? So strange... There are typically a whole series of clips around the perimiter (sides and bottom), then one or more screws that hold it tight to the door. Those screws should be keeping the panel around the door handle pulled tight against the metal structure of the door. Perhaps those are missing, or the part they screw into is missing/broken/cracked?

Great video. Big help when I replaced the battery on my 2016 Max Energi. It looks a lot worse to do than it is. I didn't have to remove the high voltage cable. The manual battery age reset doesn't give any feedback as to whether it worked so I went ahead and bought the ODB scanner from Amazon.
@cheapgeek62 Жыл бұрын
Although others have said otherwise I believe the reset for the battery is just a fancy timer to tell you when to get a new battery. This is probably because it's so inconvenient to have a dead battery in one of these cars. But I don't think it has anything to do with the charging correctly or not that just doesn't make any sense. I and many others have replaced our 12 volt batteries and didn't reset and there are no consequences practically speaking.
@jntx95752 жыл бұрын
Dan, did you figure out that HV connector by yourself? It isn't obvious that you need to pry up the two fingers for the last release. I just adapted a 26R battery for my C-Max. I needed to get the car on the road and there were no 67R batteries available. The 26R is an inch taller than the 67R so the HV connector definitely has to be removed during installation. The venting is the only significant problem with the 26R. A day after the initial installation, I made a sealed box to go over the vents and connected it to the external vent hose.
@DansWay2 жыл бұрын
Wow, great adaption. I love it! I actually got the datasheet for the connector itself and saw the exploded view. I found that my car's water pump was running continuously, or in strange 'waves' faster/slower even when the car was off. Replacing the water pump eliminated the battery problem for me. Definitely a DIY task if you are handy. Another possibility is the radio not shutting off. That is another one where twice in the past year I have had to pull out a fuse under the glovebox (F69 I believe) which basically reboots the entertainment computer. The computer is always running, and can crash or get stuck in a mode so it never enters power-down mode. The speakers will turn off (except for the dash mounted one for some reason), but it will also run down the battery.

My brother had problem with battery. Took over a month to get someone "certified " to troubleshoot. After scanning everything was ok. What was happening was key fobs were week. If hybrid can't sense the key fobs the engine won't let start. $10 to replace fob batteries fixed the problem.

Dan, My 2013 c-max hybrid would not start last night so I put a charger at the post under the hood and was able to drive the car home, I took the battery off to buy a new one and was told the battery checked o.k., I put it back on but the car did not start this morning! The battery is 6 years old and I am thinking I should still replace it but I don't want to spend the money if this is not the problem. Do you have a suggestion???
@DansWay28 күн бұрын
I would also check the voltage at the post vs. right at the battery to confirm there are no issues with the connections somehow. If it checks good then there shouldn't be a reason for it not to start. I’d definitely recommend replacing the battery if it is 6 years old as that is definitely pushing it...

Did this process and when i reconnected the battery I got a Stop Safely Now Warning. Car will turn on but won't drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Wow, so strange. I would double check the high voltage connector that is over the battery if your removed it, and the high voltage battery disconnect behind the seat.

@@DansWay I've done that multiple times. Just had it towed to the dealership. 😭

You actually don't need to take out the T25 bolts since the bottom piece can be removed with the rest of it.

Thanks Dan this was a phenomenal video. I took my cmax to get the battery test at Autozone. They hooked it up to their tester. It Read Good 81% BUT that ‘system shutting down to save level’ prompt pops up. It shuts off, the tail gate seems to be glitchy among other small things I’ve noticed. Would you say it’s time to replace my 12v battery? Thanks again amigo!

Yah, sounds like it could be time. You could put a charger on overnight to top it off and see if there is any difference after that.

The Foseal Wifi OBD scanner that is linked from this video does not work with the Forscan Lite App. I bought both and no matter what I did I could not get the Forscan Lite app to connect. It connected to other apps I downloaded so I think it is an incompatibility or bug with the Forscan Lite app and this OBD adapter. I'm returning it and ordering a Bluetooth scanner to see if I can get it to work.
@DansWay Жыл бұрын
Not sure why it didn't work for you. Were you on Android or Apple? I have this one as you can see in the video. Now I did upgrade to the 'pro' version but I don't believe that would be an issue with basic connection.
@Blztrls Жыл бұрын
@@DansWay I’m not sure why either. I’m using the Apple iPhone version. Maybe FORScan Lite changed the coding in the latest version 1.5.16 since they changed the core. It does say on the App page that they no longer recommend ELM 327 adapters. Anyway I ordered the recommended VLinker FD BLE adapter which fortunately is not that much more at $45 and uses Bluetooth which will be much more convenient than the Wi-Fi connection. I’ll let you know if this works.
@Blztrls Жыл бұрын
@@DansWay I got the vLinker FG+ adapter from Amazon (one of the recommended adapters on the Forscan Lite App) and was able to get it to connect to Forscan Lite and to reset the battery age. So I think the Foseal adaptor is no longer compatible with Forscan Lite. Also, I was able to confirm that the manual reset method (flashing highbeams & pressing brake) did not work for me either.

@@Blztrls Ok, I'll have to try using mine to see if it still works. I just used it last night on my daughter's Kia Soul no problem.

how do I check if something is running in the background to drain the battery?
@DansWay Жыл бұрын
It's not easy TBH. Best method I have would be to measure the battery voltage over a period of hours to see if the voltage is going down over time. The first measurement shold be done after several hours since the last use of the battery as well, so you will need to open the hatch and leave it there for an hour or so before taking a first reading, then wait several hours for a second.

If I take a 12V battery out of a 2015 Ford Max Hybrid, will the car shut off when new battery replaced and recognized the car as stolen? Do I need to purchase a memory saver mechanism device?

I'm not aware of any memory-saver mechanism for this car. I don't recall even loosing my radio stations for example.

Danx way isnt the good way. Flip the battery towards your head. You don't need to take all the stuff apart. Just one cover and the bolt that holds the battery in place. Negative and positive. Flip batter up. Simple.
