As someone from the Netherlands I started watching women’s soccer during the 2017 Euros, now 7 years later I’m a Gotham FC season ticket holder. Awesome to see this interview.

Thanks Sam for this beautiful podcast. Van De Donk is an outstanding field player who is both humble and aesthetically pleasing. After 5 years of watching women's football and being an Arsenal fan, I was a little concerned when she moved to Lyon, a team with "unemotional" players. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's not an easy team to integrate into. But it's amazing that she's so popular with the Lyon team. And, of course, I'm overjoyed to see her join Lyon in conquering the world with this team's tremendous play. Good luck and happiness, Danielle.

Omg yes!!!!! Please keep on interviewing international players. So great to get to know DVD better. I had this image of her as a tough badass who’s a bit violent in the field (lol) but she’s such a sweetheart. And her first podcast? Sam, you really have access that no one else has because you are so respected as a player (I know you’re retired but you’ll always be you ❤). And hearing you say how much you look(ed) up to Becky’s approval and now she’s your co-host 😍. Giant W

Thank you for blessing this world with an amazing interview. Danielle van de Donk joining the NWSL would be Breaking News, changing the way people think of the league. She's constantly challenging herself. She's focused, determined, and humanitarian, with her main goal being team success rather than personal recognition.

What a player. If Danielle comes to the NWSL, I believe it will definitely be a crazy thing for the tournament and change the way Americans view soccer (I hope so). We still don't have any player who plays like her. And what's more worth mentioning, of course the players are all very good, very friendly and great, but Danielle is like an unreal person on earth.I'm sincerely admired and proud of her. I wish you all the best in the future, Danielle. Thank you Sam so much.

great interview, I really appreciate your efforts to draw her out, more than, say, a standard interview of men because I can see and sense the humanity of these professionals and I think that's important to see. I wish you had asked her if she played street ball growing up, because that youth development side is not visible to fans and I don't know if dutch youths still do any of that. And I wonder what she has to say about Lily, since she's just gotten called into the US camp but she plays for Ajax and some feedback here would have been helpful. Otherwise, keep up the good work, your convo is fire and I'm always looking forward to the next one!

Hello Sam. Yet another chat where you drew out the essence of the player's love of football. You could not miss Danielle on the pitch, then she went and did something amazing and next stood up to players much more physically imposing. You certainly could not miss her in the swim cap though. Plus she seems to have been around since the English league got in top gear and is likely to be in the Champions League final this weekend. I will be wanting Barcelona to win though, with the other nationality Lionesses in their team. The Dutch Lionesses do some good videos to promote their team though. I can just about understand from English and German and all the football terminology. Their pronunciation gets you though in Dutch. Fortunately so many are excellent at English like Danielle.

Makes sense to assume the dutch woukd hold a grudge against the US because they lost 2019 world cup to the US. But i thought the Lineth Beerenstyn comment was stemming from the US attitude and players speaking in interviews that they were preparing to play in the final when the friendlies leading up to the world cup 2023 hasn't been all that impressive. The world perspective was that the US was arrogant to act like they had already made it to the final and talking about tactics against hypothetical opponents such as Germany. The US confidence they will play in the final did not coordinate with dominant performance. The struggle with Portugal did not make the US seem like this all powerful force that's going to blast everyone away especially. It would be cool if Lineth makes a guest appearance to clear up the controversy 😂

Given all the long lasting success, it's a shame that Lyon's training facilities are quite poor and not up to standard it should be. I don't understand how pro team could have a gym that is like somebodies home gym in a garage.
@anthony_nn6 ай бұрын
So, Lyon began planning to build a separate stadium for women.. Lyon's facilities have now been greatly improved compared to when she first arrived. But it must be said that Lyon is very invested in owning experts and that is much more beneficial to her than when she was at Arsenal.
@MartaComplex6 ай бұрын
Whilst I completely agree with you about it not being appropriate for professional teams to have poor facilities, that is simply the situation for a lot of women's teams around the world. Even those who play for 'big' clubs often have to squeeze gym time in around men's training, sometimes even around men's youth academy teams. People love to sit and criticise female footballers as if they have access to the resources of the Premier League, but few clubs are fully professional and even those that are often do not have regular strength and conditioning gym sessions for players. Unfortunately decades of underinvestment in women's sports from authorities choosing to ignore the participation of an entire gender cannot be overturned overnight. You would be horrified if you could see the set-up in some women's clubs that operate in the top tiers of their respective countries. What is automatically allocated to men - even those playing at a low level - must be argued and fought for by women. That's just how it is, sadly. The impact of men banning women's football for decades in many nations is one that is difficult to erase.

I never understand stupid comments like this. Just google her name if you want to know. Why do you automatically expect everybody else to do the work for you? If you don't know who Van De Donk is, then you can't watch much women's football and, what's more, I doubt that you are here with good intentions anyway. It's straight out of the playbook of the usual sexist comments we get on channels like this to repeatedly ask 'who is she?' The irony is that just watching 5 mins of the interview would immediately enlighten you as to who Van De Donk is, but that seems to be too much effort.

1. Don’t be fooled - the Dutch NEVER held the USWNT from scoring early since the Dutch had lots of luck and the goal post to thank. The USWNT pounded the Dutch incessantly in the first 10 minutes.. it could’ve easily been a 4 to 5 goal blowout as was the 2015 WC final against Japan. 2. For some dumb reason, the Europeans have come to believe this myth that the US women have no technique and are only good athletes. Nonsense - the US players are both athletes and technical, despite being foolishly ignored for balon d’or honors.
