We locals (I'm not from Bali, but Indonesian) are also afraid to get Dengue. Find out which months that most susceptible to get Dengue (mostly rainy season) and buy some insect repellent. Spray your room with insect repellent before you go outside, and use some mosquitos repellent lotion before you sleep. If you don't like the lotion one, you can buy some natural oil like cajuputi (minyak angin), or baby product (minyak telon). If you're living in a villa for a long time, check if they provide you with mosquito net. If they're not, consider to buy one, it's cheap. Also ask if you can burn some mosquito coils in veranda.

I work for an airline. I’ve never travelled without insurance. I’ve seen so many problems with people who have been sick, bike accidents, car accidents, infections. Once I saw a woman who broke her back after falling off an elephant, another person lost their eye after zip lining and hit in the face with a branch. Just so you know, medivac back to the USA from Thailand Bali can cost upwards of $500,000 at your expense if you don’t have insurance. That is paid to the doctor, 2 nurses and 2 pilots onboard the aircraft, the fuel and the maintenance of the aircraft.

@inezy6329
@inezy6329 Жыл бұрын
Fyi you can't fight dengue with antibiotics coz it is a virus. You need to drink lots of water n isotonic water or coconut water. In Malaysia we will take the juice of papaya leaves for three days. This method is even endorsed by our Health Ministry on its website. Just two tablespoons per day. N you need to drink crab soup for a few days to increase your platelet level back to normal. The fever is the most painful but the most critical time is AFTER the fever subsided..that's when the virus is either weakening or getting more violent in which case you will develop bleedings of your internal organs. If you find your nose or gum starting to bleed go to the hospital immediately. The doctors will give plasma transfusion to you. But as I said, the locals will take papaya leaf juice n.crab soup to ensure the platelets increase..the reason for the bleeding is because the platelets have gone down too low. This will be fatal if not treated. Rashes will come out after the fever n if you r not bleeding, the recovery will be for about a week whereby you will still feel lethargic n sore. The virus will forever exist in your liver though after you have had dengue.

I contracted dengue. I believe it was while cycling around Lombok. Got back to Bali after about a week over there and was woke up in my place around 3am with bad body pains. Figured I might have the flu. Fell back asleep and woke up around 5 in the worst pain I’ve ever been in. Basically rolled around in pain all day. Zero strength. Went to the hospital that night and they told me doing blood work then would be pointless because it was too soon, but the doctor said it was probably dengue. Went back the next night and it was confirmed. At the same time, the pain had almost completely subsided. The doctor told me everything that would happen over the next week almost to a tee. Unbelievable how predictable that virus is. After three days feeling totally fine (maybe a bit tired), I started developing a weird rash all over my arms. Then started getting super tired and nauseous. My girlfriend was prepared for this and she took me to a nearby hospital. I thought I was in there for a night. I was in there for 6 nights. When I was checked out, I still felt woozy for a couple days. Couldn’t get the taste of copper out of my mouth for a good month. Easy to get car sick and air sick running business trips to Java. It rocked me completely to my core for about 2 months. Dengue is not to be played. That was about 8 years ago. I’ll never forget it. And I’ll be sure to always use repellent. It can save your life.

I'm just going to put it here for everyone. If you're on any tropical country, you'll likely get dengue there. If so, it's best to go to hospital. There's a high chance that you will stay there for sometime so be aware of that. Locals know about Dengue and they know that they treat this seriously by going into hospital. But good thing is, once you done with the ordeal, you will be immune to dengue for the rest of your life. This disease has medium chance of lethality if untreated after long periods of time (high chance if you're not treated by any means) but if you're getting treatment, it would be as low as normal fever. But the discomfort from this is going to be a bit miserable (You will live, but few days of suffering and discomfort).

I really feel for you! I lived in Bali for 22 years and got dengue fever twice. I was well-settled and I speak fluent Indonesian, but even with these huge advantages, it was absolutely awful and frightening in a way most people will never understand, because of how things are there. So I totally feel for you, and watching this part of your story made me feel like reaching right into my laptop to give you a big hug and a sympathetic shoulder to cry on. You're a strong person. That's obvious. You'll do well wherever you find yourself in the future. The tough times and disappointments and hard decisions you've faced have made you become the wiser and more compassionate person you are now. Nobody can take that away from you. @@DanieJay Even if you help 1 person you have done your job but I bet this will make many people more aware & take better precautions when travelling. I had pneumonia in Greece, a rare disease in Peru, a high fever with terrible back pain in afghanistan. This was in the 1970's when hospitals in those places were not great, to say the least. I think I was lucky to have survived. I recommend to not travel alone unless it is for work for a company that has an insurance and medical arrangements in advance in case of emergency. I saw an amazing Indian doctor for 50 gbp inc meds he had me in a hospital bed in his home 3 nurses to give me intravenous as my asthma had worsened and painkillers for leg plus some natural pills.. at least had respite for about 2 weeks with that. I ll never rush again for anyone and look after myself on my trips now although cant afford longterm at present. I also had what vaccinations were appropriate and had them slowly so didnt affect my breathing.. I dont know about dengue guess as malaria there isnt anything much..

Hi. Dengue can only be found in tropical countries including SINGAPORE. Yes Singapore. Dengue fever starts from the mosquitoes called Aedes. These mosquitoes only come out during night fall. Probably ard 5pm - 7pm. Just get yr mosquito repellent and your travel insurance. So sorry that happened to you during Yr stay in Bali. It is just unfortunate. Once you got dengue, you will never get it again as u will be immune to the aedes bite. Some may still get it again. If in bali, try avoiding staying near padi fields. It's more risky. Anyhow, since you are home, have a good one and enjoy!. Life is short!

from my understanding and please if im wrong anybody can correct me. there are 4 strains of dengue. if you get bit for the first time by any of these 4 strains you get sick. but after you pass this you are immune from that strain biting you and reinfecting. if you get bit by another strain then the antibodies of the first and 2nd come back thats why subsequent dengue is more serious. but if you get bit by the same strain you are actually immune to that already.

Also, your credit card might include a travel health insurance by default. Some cards include the insurance _even if you haven't purchased the plane tickets with the card_ but recently many issuers changed the policy to only cover if you purchased airfare with them. So be sure to read the fine print and see the perks and limitations of your credit cards.

Dengue fever is very common in Indonesia and there is a season where the number of cases would rise higher. I once got it too when I was a kid, but it wasn't too bad coz my mom detected the fever pretty quickly and took me to a doctor. I never get dengue ever since and I heard people said once you get it, your body will have some sort of immunity and there is a low chance you might be infected again. But yeah, everywhere you go, no matter what country, there is always a possibility of getting sick or get into qccident, so having travel insurance is a must. I went to Vietnam before the pandemic. I fell down when I got robbed because I was trying to hold on to my backpack. I had to be rushed to hospital afterwards coz I was bleeding quite bad from leg to my chin. Luckily I did buy travel insurance 2 days before I left for Vietnam. That was one time that I got so unlucky during traveling. There is always a misfortune, anytime, anywhere...so everyone take care of yourself well.

@@DanieJay Dengue fever can be life-threatening if not treated properly. But actually it kills less people than other diseases including COVID-19. the symptoms are fever more than 39° C for 3 days, strong headache. after that you are back to normal temperature, but you still feel unwell. something wrong inside your body. that's why you need to be hospitalized. so remember to have travel insurance wherever you go. the normal recovery time is 7-10 days start from the first time you get fever. The sooner you are treated, the faster it will heal

THINK: Climate Change -- -- -- After reading the comments here I remembered how this relates to human-triggered climate change chaos. These mosquitoes and the diseases they carry have been spreading their wings (so to speak) and expanding their range rapidly, due to global warming and altered rainfall patterns. That's why this story isn't just about Bali, or even about tropical destinations. These mosquitoes, and the dengue virus they can carry, are now becoming constant residents in many places where they never existed before, especially in Europe, the USA, and parts of Asia that didn't know dengue until now. This is real. We all have a lot to learn.

I'm so sorry this happened to you!! And hope you're recovering more every day. It is SOOOOO important to have travel/health insurance. I broke my leg (badly at the knee) and had to have surgery and stay in a Thai hospital for a week, where they barely spoke English and I had to use a bed pan every day. AND it would have cost me $12,000 US if I didn't have insurance. Also, my recovery took almost 5 months and a LOT of physical therapy (not covered by my insurance). And like you, I was all alone, no family or friends to rely on.

I spent a full 6 months all over Bali and never got sick once. Thailand too with one exception: a Chinese owned hotel breakfast buffet. I'd recommend clean water and electrolytes if you get sick. I seriously would have died if I didn't know to get electrolyte packets to mix with water. Now that you got Dengue once you qualify for the Dengue vaccine, if you dare.

All the best! I visit family a lot in Angola/Africa and Malaria is big and very dangerous there, also from mosquitos : TIPS that might help: -Always have mosquito repellent with you (day + night) / they love our extensions aka arms + legs + feets (easier to reach) -Room check up 1 : 2 hours before bedtime spray your entire bedroom with anti mosquito spray and go out to let the product act and dissolve (dont breathe it in please) -Room check up 2 : before bed check underneath bed, in wardroom (these f---- hide well/ I go with a towel and hit various places to make them come out :D ) -Evenings ALWAYS wear long sleeves tshirts + a white legging (black attracts mosquitos) + socks (even with sandals yes) Yes you might not look as fancy but if you are sitting on a terrace for hours at night this can save your life (ok if you are going out I understand then please mosquito spray) -Mosquito net -Sleep with leggings + socks! -Have a fan directed towards you, mosquitos are light and can't fly against the wind -Either malaria medication prior to the trip (Im not a fan) or post Malaria medication afterwards, cary with you the next 6 month (malaria can come out various month afterwards) Mosquitos are the 1st death reason in the world, Malaria and other mosquito led diseases kills hundred of thousands per year, just be careful and aware. Enjoy your trips!!
