I now want to share something special about the people in Bali. They really live a kind brotherhood, sisterhood, life. They are so welcoming and so gracious I felt the spirit of love around me all the time. When I left I held onto that simple attitude of gratitude and I will forever be grateful for experiencing this from the native peoples. I pray that the influx of foreigners will honor and not tarnish the peaceful Bali culture.

I am a Balinese local currently living abroad and missing Bali each day. For some reason the algorithm shows me this video XD everything you showed me makes me miss home even more! One thing though; the choice between a scooter and a car is a no-brainer; nothing beats motorbikes in Bali. If you need a car for a group travel or during the rain, grab and gocar (gojek) are definitely a great choice than flat out owning a car. I understand families with children often prefer cars but if you're solo or a couple, the scooter literally beats everything. Lovely work on the video

Indonesian culture is very varied because of the different islands, over 17000 but not all inhabited 500 different languages and in the case of Bali 100% Hindu and Lombok, part Hindu plus in other parts of Indonesia Islam has adapted to the original culture just like Christianity did....
@torianjallen2 жыл бұрын
@@jejewa2763 I’ve read this before. It’s so fascinating to me. I grew up in the United States, where we were taught to believe that we were the only place in the world that successfully integrated people of many backgrounds into one community. But the more I travel, the more I see how untrue this is. I met the first person in my life from Indonesia back in uni, and he told me so much about his home in Java. About the people. I want to see it all with my own eyes and talk to all the kind people just like him.

I've been living in Indo for 8 years I've been to Bali many many times. There are so many subcultures here that it's very complex to judge them though. Universal truth is you get what you attract and if you're cool with them most people are cool with you.

Basically, the whole of Bali has become a built-up area in one permanent traffic snarl. All tourist publications, this one included, show scenes of natural beauty and calm. The reality is that, if you're not in your room, you're likely to be in heavy traffic for hours to get to the nice spots which are also crowded. The roads are mostly far too narrow for their motor and foot traffic. For that volume of traffic, an Aussie road would be six times bigger, plus have foot-paths, kerb and guttering, and a big set-back for any buildings, making it much more spacious, orderly and safe. Plus the traffic obey the road rules, which doesn't really exist here. In this video she shows virtually no traffic, and the fewest people, except when she's showing traffic deliberately to gush about how good it is. The $7-a-night thing has always got some kind of unamenable catch, like it'll be noisy, cramped, smelly, or some other third-world kind of drawback. Plus the Indos, left to their own devices, revert to type and seem to specialise in the broken, the crumby, the jerry-built, the slovenly, the seen-better-days, the shithouse. Like today, I opened the curtain, and the whole thing including rod and brackets came away in my hand. When I asked the staff to fix it, they simply poked the screw back into the hole, i.e. not caring that exactly the same thing is going to happen next time. That's Indonesia all over. They don't care that what they're doing doesn't work or make sense. This is one of the biggest cultural differences with the West. Most accommodation doesn't have a kitchen, which means you've got to walk or drive in the traffic to eat out at their eateries, which is basically rice and noodles. To get decent food with protein costs a lot more. If they do say they have a kitchen, it will be like a sink and a gas stove with no utensils or fridge. That's what they will call a "complete" kitchen. They just bullshit about everything in a way that westerners do not. I would say a minimum for a decent place, clean, quiet, near the beach, with a functioning kitchen, with aircon, is about $1,000 a month min. So say $30 a night, and that's before food is factored in. Before I came to Indo, I believed Dave who said that it costs him "$500 or $600" a month to live here. That was just complete bullshit. People love to do this it seems. To live a modest life in a tiny house, eat mostly at home, keep a car, and be charitable, costs about $2500 a month. But then again, for a one or two week visit and change, then yeah, sure, one can have a fine time doing as she says. Comments ....?

Nice video Jean, glad it popped up on my feed. This seems like a magical place to visit, let alone live. As children we had a favorite book called, "Far Into The Night" about a ten year old Balinese girl who is chosen to dance in a Pengerupukan ritual (?) where she's confronted by an evil spirit. Initially she is frightened and runs away from the demon but before long realizes that there is no place to run, confronts the evil spirit and drives it off. The simplicity of the story appealed greatly to our young minds, but there was also something very sweet and sincere about it that still resonates. Looking forward to your other videos.

I think you portray the place pretty accurately. For me, the big 'cons' about living there permanently are definitely the driving (LOL), and I can't see myself living in a country where I don't feel comfortable driving... The second is the medical aspect of living there. You might have a medical insurance, and I am sure the hospitals are very decent but you might not make it to the hospital on time! And we're back to the driving thing! LOL I have seen ambulances trying to get through the traffic and felt so bad for the ppl inside! The other thing to remember is that if you drive and you get involved in an accident, as a foreigner, your chances of being found at fault are pretty high and that's not cool, especially if you are not at fault! Otherwise, I love Bali, can't wait to go back in a couple of months. I love the people there, their genuine friendly disposition, their community spirit, their attachment to their culture and religion, their food, how beautiful the countryside is, even when it rains, I love it....

Hi Jean, thank you for the informative video. I was born in Indonesia and immigrated to the US 60 years ago. Your video is one of the reasons whether I retire in Bali or in Europe (Germany, Austria, or Switzerland). Another option is to retire in Europe, I speak Germans and Dutch. So, the only issue I have is medical insurance how is the hospital facility, either good or sufficient enough for an elderly person like me? The last time I was in Bali was in early 2020 for business. I had no time to make any evaluation at the time. Thank you.
@andrealexander972 жыл бұрын
As long as you don't have any special medical need, it's good enough to handle most emergency need, if you need some good specialist it's better to move to Surabaya/Jakarta or just straight move to Europe, just my two cents as an Indonesian....

I've never wanted to visit Bali, as it's a *massive* tourist destination, but after watching this vid (no idea why it came recommended on my feed), I'll now endeavour to travel there some day. Liked and Subscribed; well done.

Hi Jean, I enjoyed your channel and have been following it. I am a fellow Singaporean and am intend to relocate/retiring in Bali ( I have been there 6 times and loving it) hence am researching for more info, and you channel provides insight. Do you know of any area in Bali that is suitable for residing (or retiring) other than the usual place that we see on KZbin (like Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur, Ubud central..etc)?

Thanks for a fabulous video, so informative. I’ve been in Ubud for the last two months, here from South Africa where the crime is rampant. I feel so safe here in Bali and seriously thinking of making a move. I have an online travel agency and want to continue with this, planning and booking holidays for my clients in Africa and Asia. Is this allowed on a visitor’s visa? And can I bring my dog to Bali?

A tip on driving your scooter in bali. The locals have been driving those narrow and crowded roads their entire life and some foreigners drive a bike back home so they drive like jason bourne. But take it easy, drive at your own comfortable pace.
@ThePeepingLoony2 жыл бұрын
For those planning on visiting Bali, a word of advice, go to the Consulate/Embassy in advance and get a visa. When I visited Bali, at the airport, it took me 3 HOURS to get a visa! Because of this experience I will NEVER visit Bali again. You have to go to one person to pay for the visa, you have to go to another person to get an unstamped visa, then you have to go to a third person to stamp the visa! I understand the concept of creating employment for your citizens, but at least have all these 3 people located in a line in the SAME place! Instead they are spread out in 3 different places in the airport, forcing you to stand in line 3 TIMES!

Great video! Makes me want to migrate there already. However I still have some questions: 1) How about the safety over there? 2) Does long term staying foreigners need to pay for their income tax? 3) Is it feasible to cycle over there as their mode of transport? 4) How do you deal with pests like snakes in your backyard? Looking forward to your videos on how to move to Bali or Thailand!

Avoid travel alone at night anywhere in Indonesia!. If you see snake near your accommodation, just tell the owner. The will bring specialists to catch the snake.

u can cycling in the less populated area like rice field area
@JeanVoronkova2 жыл бұрын
yo, we live in Uluwatu area and it's more local and its super safe generally - love the people here, but i have heard and felt myself that in the busy touristy areas like Kuta esp at night its completely not. Also we're not late night birdies in general so that helps w our impression of the safety. Here in Ulu a lot of ppl cycle regularrly for sport but not as a mode of transport no! it's too difficult and distances too far! We've had one baby snake wander into our kitchen in the past year and it got frightened of us and ran away by itself when we noticed. And if you receive income anywhere incl in Indonesia you'll be taxed - think that's a world wide thing!
@christineflygirl2 жыл бұрын
Taxes of course! No way to avoid them! LOL However, depending on where your are from, there may be a tax agreement between Indonesia and your country, so you don't pay double taxes. For example, France and Canada have one.
