My childhood friend. We spent a lot of time together. I stayed at his house and he stayed at mine. His Mom would make us lunch then we would hang out in the basement. i sat next to him while he played his piano and song his songs. I would follow along with my guitar. Danny will always have a piece of my heart.

It's called Tardive Dyskenisia. Its one of the really awful side effects of anti-psychotic (lithium, seroquel, etc) and other medication (I know of one anti-nausea med that can cause it). It causes the repetitive jerks and movements and is a permanent side effect. I'm gutted I'm only finding out about the beauty of Daniel Johnston now. RIP 😔

Elizabeth B I have no idea what Daniel was taking, but I’ve been taking Lithium for years and used to take Seroquel at the same time. I had minor shakes, but everyone is different. Tardive Dyskenisia is unlikely with these medications but more often occur with older medications that are rarely prescribed anymore. But who knows and it doesn’t really matter! Big props to Daniel for moving through it

Daniel's perception of the world is beautiful - His songs emphasize things other than vocal srength or fretwork - he's a born natural at melody which is rare in its self, then you have the fact that he completely lost his mind and we are so lucky that his obsession is creating art! and we get to see into his world! Don't compare him to other artists, look at him as an unique human being.

its more about the creative sincerity behind his song writing. you can't fake what he's been through and to see someone who's able to distil his (quite unusual) life into such heartfelt performance shows that however fucked up people's lives can get, if your heart is in the right place then you can keep on giving to people. every time i listen to one of his songs my faith in humanity is slightly strengthened and i see the world around filled with such beauty and hope.
