@Jason Voorhees Have you seen the other interviews he does?? That's part of his shtick. He was even toned down in his person for this one, not a jerk in the slightest.
@arianrhodhyde74825 жыл бұрын
No, he does actually give stuff. Anthony Fantano got interviewed by him and later explained that he got to keep some of the records nardwuar brought. He didn't always give stuff away, they used to mostly be conversation starters, but he does now. Obviously he couldn't give 5-10 records to everybody he interviews because of the cost, especially the rare records. But usually he says if something isn't a gift,-- like he does here with that spoken word album. And half the stuff was from a different guy who was dealing with daniel's brother so nardwuar didn't really have any involvement with that.
@roushanam10 жыл бұрын
That's just Nardwuar's persona. He isn't patronizing Daniel. Actually he toned himself down for this one. And I agree with the posters who say Daniel is relatively comfortable on this interview and a lot of his demeanor is due to medications. Such as how his hands shake when he holds the mic....

Yeah, I agree with everyone saying Nard toned it down quite a bit for this interview, and also that Nardwuar himself also is probably dealing with some things in the head while he's interviewing. Daniel clearly has some issues, but he's also clearly there enough to tell when he's being patronized or talked down to, and it looks to me like he respects that from Nardwuar, I imagine 99% of other interviews he gives are to reporters assuming he can't even form a coherent thought, and that's clearly not true. I was impressed with Nard's skill and tact at respecting the artist and their work while also respecting the artist's problems, and all the while not making them the focus of the interview.

wow, after seeing the same wrongheaded comment regurgitated numerous times, i decided i have to make my own comment... people, you keep saying "nardwuar should've acted differently as to not alarm johnston/raise his nerves etc.." well, did you ever think that nardwuar is his own person with his own unique idiosyncrasies, and perhaps, like johnston, he can't simply change himself in the blink of an eye? sure, he could've maybe considered more that johnston deals with some issues, but certainly nardwuar does, too. it's kind of bothersome to see you all act like johnston is completely handicapped and that those interacting with him must walk on eggshells. he's a strong person, and an amazing one. i also agree that people should respect certain conditions that are present when interacting with johnston (and any others who deal with similarly unfortunate issues), but i don't agree that nardwuar is completely in the wrong for being himself.

Love Daniel Johnston's front! There's the tendency to pity poor bi-polar Daniel, assuming he's not aware, but then he responds in interviews with a cutting wit, most of the time making the interviewer and audience seem obtuse for not getting his hilarious sense of humor (and introspection).

Listen to his song Life in Vain. Daniels music changed my life and how I view art more than anyone elses. I would have never begun making music if I had never discovered his.

Dave Leahy, I think people are disliking it because they think the interviewer is being disrespectful to Johnston. But I don’t think that’s the case here. He seems very kind and excited to see Johnston happy.

I don't know what it is but I cry every time I see or hear Daniel sing. Early in our relationship, I introduced my gf to his music when I put on Hi, How Are You. We sat on the couch in the dark. True Love Will Find You In the End came on. Tears were rolling down my cheeks and she asked me "does his music ever make you cry?" and then she felt my face...

I love the care nardwuar puts in this interview, he slowed down a bit to accommodate to Daniel's struggles. And he worked with Daniel so well, and you can tell he really cared for Daniel and wanted to have a genuine conversation after the interview. Daniel Johnston was such a precious person, he may have never made it big time but he'll always have a place in the hearts of his fans. And even inspired Kurt Cobain to an extent. I hope he's resting well, I only discovered his music when his passing made some news coverage, but I've absolutely come to love his music and personality. You are loved and missed Daniel Johnston.
