Another brilliant performance. Daniel would have been perfect as the lead role in the film 'Somewhere in Time' with the exquisite 18th variation being played throughout.

"Music so beautiful, glorious and profound that it could create a soul under the ribs of death." John Milton "Music to soothe the savage breast, soften rocks, and bend the knotted oak." William Congreve This masterpiece is the "Mount Everest" of variations written for any instrument. When Rachmaninoff simply inverted the 18th Paganini variation to hear what it sounded like, when he heard the result he rushed to the telephone to call Horowitz, excitedly exclaiming to him in Russian: "I have another hit on my hands!" This is an exemplary performance of the Rhapsody, and I have never heard the Etude he selected for his encore more immaculately articulated. Milton Moore Las Vegas, Nevada

Bellisima interpretacion, Daniel! Mil gracias por compartirla!
Beautifully recorded audio here. (Didn't want to forget to mention.Gorgeous sounding Steinway, BTW). Solid interpretation, with some very nice individual touches...and beautifully judged tempos...for me. The crisp articulation from the orchestra is aided by tempi that allows perfect communication between pianist and orchestra. 7:56 onward to the next variation...articulation is thrilling..and beautiful pedaling technique here. Speaking of which, the woodwinds sound wonderful here. Did I mention? This is truly a 1st class orchestra here. 10:56, a little stumble, but fine recovery by Mr Kharitonov. That's how a PRO does it, finishing strong. The 17th variation ( one of my favorites) the pianist gives us some beautiful counter melody, without being heavy handed. I would have liked a little more of the "awe and mystery" overall here (as performed by Lugansky on the TUBE , but that's just me. The 18th is full bodied, passionate. gain finishing things, tempi propulsive, but not rushed. My preference. Again, the articulation is truly terrific. The last 4 Variations really rock the joint! My sense is Mr Kharitonov will in future days, capture even more of the humor and wonder of this piece, as he did in his Prokofiev 1st. BTW, watching his hands (I was a pianist...now a piano player), he has a wonderful "looseness" to his hands, relaxed. At the end, his graciousness towards his conductor and orchestra was how it should be done. Wonderful encore..the concert master watching those hands. Again, the clarity and effective use of pedal....Special. A nice way to end this Saturday night.

Despite the memory lapse (??) at 10.58 this is a remarkable performance by any standards. It's up there with the absolute best since the piece was written
