Wonderful performance, with the pianist's elegance, married to plenty of passion and romanticism. This young orchestra did themselves proud. Too many highlights to mention but here goes: A very beautiful 1st movement, with an especially dramatic last 2 pages. Throughout the 1st movement, judicious, yet musical use of rubato by Mr Kharitonov. The 2nd movement is so lyrical, with fine contributions from the clarinetist/woodwinds, and lovely unisons from the 1sts and 2nd violins as they play the melody to piano accompaniment the last few pages. The 2 against 3 motif is well observed here, and the pianist plays this movement with obvious emotion. The 3rd movement REALLY allows the orchestra to turn it loose...FINALLY I can hear our high strings digging in! Mr Kharitonov's finger work...clarity is thrilling. At 29:09 till the "fugue"..Daniel displays a keen sense of what's going on...he slightly slows his tempo to allow the orchestra perfectly timed "answers." In fact, this 20 seconds of give and take is one of the finest I've heard...and I've heard hundreds. The Finale...the final pages starting with the Grand 2nd melody full bore is bold, full bodied..as it should be. Again the violins really get into it here. The clarity of the the pianist's work here...no pedal smear is wonderful...crisply played, chords like hammers...but not hammered. The final 4 chords..the composer's name...Rach-ma-ni-noff (!) had a slight disagreement between pianist and orchestra, but it was exciting and dramatic, nonetheless. Bravos duefor these young, impossibly talented musicians, their dedicated conductor, and a wonderful musician and pianist.

what a beautiful show with these talented young musicians ! About the pianist I've been an admirer for a long time !

This really is a beautiful performance by a very talented up and coming guy. I wanted more light and shade and for him to take more time over sections. The crescendos and diminuendos are, for my ears, too abrupt but he will learn by experience. Don't get me wrong - I really loved it. I have contacted the pianist on Twitter and Facebook and do hope he replies

Unfortunately, the quality of the audio is not good (not easy to appreciate the interpretation but overall it is a very good rendition of this very popular piano concerto. To be honest, I'm not too crazy about Rachmaninoff's piano concertos. They're interesting and this one is, of course, the most beautiful one (I don't like the fourth one, at all) In general, even though his music is too virtuosic for my taste (but well administered, so to speak. not void and insipid like Liszt's music) he composed very beautiful melodies. He dedicated this concerto to his physician Nikolai Dahl who helped him to overcome depression. It was composed right at the turn of the century (1900). The second movement is beautiful (mostly the main theme) but ironically it is the third movement the one I like the most. You play it very well. I hope I can listen to it again with better audio. I like the way the young Portuguese violinists dance with the music and their colorful scarves make the experience more pleasant. Bravo!!

This is a concerto written by a manic depressive after undergoing psychiatric and hypnotherapy treatment. This is a concerto of suffering, longing, and lonely torment. This beautiful young man at the piano plays too much like a robot, striving only for technique and approved musical shadings. There should be more rubato, stealing from one note for the sake of another, more hesitancy before plunging headlong into another painful passage. This concerto demands more than skill; it demands the essence, the embodiment, of the Russian soul.we know as Rachmaninov.
