Daniel Perry was the co-pilot on the Nationwide Flight 723, which departed Cape Town International and shortly after lift-off had the right hand engine separated from the aircraft.
Engine failure after take off is a manoeuvre that is well versed and trained specifically for all airline pilots, twice per year. This however, was no ordinary engine failure after take off.
When the engine severed from the aircraft, there was a significant change in the flight characteristics, unusual to a conventional engine failure. The ruptured fuel and hydraulic lines caused a multiple, complex failures. Hydraulic failure on its own is a major emergency and requires dramatically increased workload from the flight deck, to bring the stricken aircraft back home.
Compounding an engine failure, a fuel leak, hydraulic failure, control issues and bad weather is a recipe for disaster. Trevor Arnold and Dan Perry dug deep and brought the B737 back to land in a miserable foggy, rainy Cape Town.

Trevor Arnold was one of the most proficient and professional pilots I've worked with. Almost a prefectionist. Daniel, you were so lucky to have him on your side that day. A great effort by you both, a perfect outcome for a nightmare situation. Sadly, this was also the day our beloved airline started dying. SAA and SACAA would never allow us to fly again. We did for a few short months but it ended too soon.

Thanks for hauling Dan before the camera. What a gent, all the more so for his modesty, humility and praise of others. What an amazing story, even after all these years. SA aviators have a long and proud record of top-class skill and performance, sadly now undermined by...ah well, we all know...

An absolute on the edge of my seat interview. After leaving the British Army where I was a JTAC & also just getting my PPL I can only just start to understand how this must of felt like. Especially being in the soup the entire time plus experiencing opposite indicators of what you physically feel & also what your instruments are telling you. Mix with that not having modern tech that we have today Dan is certainly deserving of the title of supertanker hero. To me this supersedes almost all aviation emergency situations that I know of such as what happened in the Capt Sully incident etc. If this where today these guys would of been front page news for weeks. I’m so surprised that I hadn’t heard of this before & great work in bringing this interview on KZbin to be recorded in history. This channel should have many many more subs than it has at the moment. Thank you for such a great channel on KZbin & omg Dan & the entire crew should be recognised & given some kind of award at least. The skills of the crew is remarkable especially when having a manual reversal with zero horizon visible & having to trust your life in your instruments & having to fly without any hydraulic assistance. Again this entire crew should now be recognised for the amazing feat that they achieved & also thanks to the channel for bringing this story to the KZbin community & my attention. nice job 👍

A very sad day indeed. The outcome of that day started the fall of the Nationwide Emperor. The crew did a fantastic job in landing the bird safely.

inevitable when the company wasn't behaving well in terms of Regulatory Oversight's, Lucky for the passengers they had good pilots that day as other pilots may not have maintained composure

Great channeling of the conversation to deliver a record of the incident. We never had to think of the airworthiness of aircraft many years ago in SA, its now necessary. Engines don’t just fall off, many failed in the work process.

Alex, just FYI, at about the 53 minute mark, you were actually mixing up the American Airlines DC 10 ( flight 191) crash out of Chicago, just after take off, in 1979, ( very similar to what happened with this Nationwide flight), with the United Airlines DC 10 crash ( flight 232) in Sioux City. PS I left Spoories in 1999 😊 Very sad to see what has happened over there. Great interviews👍

Great video and thanks for that! .......... What I was wondering is, did the passengers that saw the engine separate, not tell the cabin crew? ..... and why then did the cabin crew not report it to the cockpit immediately?
@DimitriPappas
@DimitriPappas 3 жыл бұрын
Was wondering the same thing. Took the pilots several minutes to discover which engine failed while some passengers knew instantaneously. I guess passengers aren't a reliable source of information, but what about a chain of communication between the passengers, flight attendants, and the pilot? Strange

It is an incredibly stressful time, with things happening fast. All the while, just after take off, a critical phase of flight. The crew did an amazing job.

There have been several disasters where crew have misidentified the failed engine. If the live engine is shutdown incorrectly, the aircraft falls out of the sky. Taking a moment to be sure is important.
