I live in Seattle, and Daniel Smith is one of the city's "local guy does good" stories. They started out back in the day making printmaking ink, and branched out over time with many art mediums as well as one of this regions most robust retail art supply stores. Recently, like many art suppliers they have scaled back their retail business and online store. They closed their Bellevue (east of Seattle) store and downsized the main store, which is actually closed currently (temporarily?) due to covid.. I was told they will continue to make and sell their own brands of paint and other art products. They make great stuff and are very popular.

To look at the palette of colors and your painting at the same time it’s hard to believe that you achieved such a nice muted transparent look. I think you’re correct about beginners wanting to know what colors to purchase all the while they need to experiment with opacity vs. transparency and staining vs. lifting. I am just leaving the beginning stage & entering the intermediate level & I have learned a ton from you. I enjoy the demos and the reviews you give. You have a great variety of demos too. It’s not dominated by only one manner of painting. I recommend your channel all the time. God bless you.

I cut my watercolor painting teeth on Daniel Smith's paints. I love them so much! There are a lot of good paints out there, but it's just easier for me to stick to one or two brands so I don't get too mixed up. Hard to go wrong with these paints. They have pretty much everything you could possibly need when it comes to color. I realize everyone has their own preference, but I sure love these paints :)

This is Alvaro’s older demonstration set sans 2 colors that were actually in the palette, missing is Cerulean blue and Lavender...the Lavender that he prefers is Holbien’s because of its opacity and strength. Cerulean Blue was left out because 11 would have been an odd set and I don’t believe DS even had Lavender available at the time and why it was never added to the set. Alvaro has a new demo palette he uses that is an 8 color limited color palette which I find interesting and fun it contains Alvaro’s Caliente and Fresco Grey’s, Sepia. Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Cad Red, Cobalt Blue and Lavender. Alvaro’s studio palette is bigger and very similar to his demo palette and contains Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine, Deep Scarlet/Alizarine Crimson, Hanza Yellow Deep, Mayan Orange was replaced by Pyrrol Orange, Organic Vermilion, Pyrrol Red, Quin Burnt Orange, Transparent Red Oxide, Viridian, His Cool and warm Greys as well as regular Nuetral Tint, Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Green and Cobalt Turquoise, Verditer and of course Titanium White which he uses straight out of the tube.

Watercolour Art in Cape Town Holbien is difficult to get for a reasonable price almost everywhere outside of Japan, I live in Mexico and their a two brands here Windsor & Newton or Schmincke not a fan of W&N and while I like Schmincke a 5ml tube cost more than a 15ml tube of Daniel Smith but don’t like Schmincke that much...I have a relative who lives in Tokyo he sends me the 13, 15ml tubes I have on my palette (cost me less than $45) and any others tubes I might need it just takes awhile to get to me. You can use the Daniel Smith Lavender it’s fine I would just add a bit of Chinese White to make it a little more opaque.

Antony Michael Pugh right now we’re in lockdown, so all the art shops and deliveries are closed. Art supplies are now a black market item 😅 .... I feel so fortunate now. We’re lucky to stock most brands in South Africa. Although customs duty is quite expensive, so Daniel Smith is a lot pricier than Winsor Newton for some reason

This is so helpful, Antony Michael! I've found that many artists who paint cityscapes like Alvaro and Frank Eber, etc have very muted palettes but add an opaque lavender/blue and opaque orange for highlights. I have an old tube of Cad Orange and didn't know what to do with it until I saw demos by those artists. Thanks for the info on Alvaro's palette.

I loved seeing that palette in the Christmas episode. I am so glad to see it again because it looks so functional. I grabbed my Daniel Smith paint when Michael's closed the Pat Catan's to reopen as a Michael's location. I stuck mostly to series 1 colors since the only other watercolor paint I have is W&N Cotman paints. I so love using the Daniel Smith paints, and having gotten them at such a discounted price, I don't feel guilty using them to just play around. I don't know what colors I want to fill in to fill out my collection, but I know I will be fighting the completionist in me that will crave owning them all.

Thanks as always for a very instructive video. Years ago when I started painting my watercolor art friends took me to the Danial Smith store in Seattle and told me to purchase a good selection of DS paints. I have lots of other brands now, but but still use the DS watercolor paints quite a bit. I certainly agree with what you said about a limited palette. I have tried lots of different palette colors recommended in books and by "experts" and also agree that there are lots of different opinions, most of which work well depending on how you use them. Stay healthy and be safe.

Thanks Steve! I was very curious about this set. Did a little research on the DS site and found I had all but a couple of the paints and had others that matched the pigment numbers. So I threw them into an empty palette and have taken them out to paint this month. No surprise they make getting to dark very easy. I was skeptical about the viridian but find between the yellow/ochre/blues and that I can get a pretty good range of greens. Love the reds!

M. Graham is my favorite as well. They are so soft and it is almost as if they do not harden even outside the tube as long as the pallet is closed. The only other similar creamy texture is Koh-i-noor Modeluz but are only available in the UK. I buy them when I travel to Czech Republic they are quite expensive even when I buy them directly in the Czech Republic.

I have the split primary set from daniel smith and it was my first introduction to artist-quality watercolour outside of Schmincke. the colour selection was very good for a beginner because it forced me to learn about mixing. it was really expensive though because there are not many shops that have it and it has to be imported. the tubes are also really tiny. I prefer ordering local or buying in a physical shop over ordering international.

What an interesting set! I would personally add a magenta instead of that mayan orange and cerulean blue instead of cobalt blue. But the set looks very good for natural-looking mixes like those in landscapes and cityscapes. Hey Steve. I have a question regarding earth tones, specifically yellow ochre and burnt sienna. Which do you prefer, Daniel Smith’s version or M Graham’s version? I’m currently using M Grahams however they are a little opaque. Daniel Smith’s version seems to be more transparent and their burnt sienna a little on the pinky side. I know Denise from In Liquid Color really likes the burnt sienna. Can you give me your thoughts? Stay safe and healthy.

Agree with the Viridian comment, but I do keep the Daniel Smith Viridian on my landscape palette because of how it mixes on the page with other colors and gives such a natural texture to foliage and water. I add a drop of glycerin when I pour a pan of Viridian and stir to keep it re-wettable, but one could use a drop of honey or buy the M Graham version of Viridian.

@@everartokelli yep, pretty right about that... Wonder if sennelier has viridian, the only professional brand selling the tubes, that I have in a """"near"""" art store to me... @@bozmundarts2614 Jadeite is beautiful! I don't have a tube of it, but it's on my list and yes, I imagine it works like a really deep shade of viridian but with high tinting strength. I own Diopside Genuine, but am still learning how to best use it in landscapes, it can be hard to mute down. Sennelier is a nice brand, I only own a few colors but it's great quality for a good price.

Any chance you may do a video on your favourite brushes? I'm just finally investing in some higher quality brushes and some of the prices of brushes are that high that I wonder if they're only expensive because of their name. I'd like to see your thoughts on what's worth it and what's not! Thank you 💜

Favorites are Silver Brush black velvet for smaller brushes or for a softer brush. Princeton Elite for a slightly stiffer brush. But I like lots of brush brands. This video goes back a ways but a lot of these are still favorites. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5zCaYWJrc9oi5Y A recent favorite is Escoda Prado.

They don’t list the pigment(s) for Mayan blue either. Maybe we’re to appreciate the source mystery as part of enjoying it? I love the Mayan blue anyways; it’s so soft and creamy and fresh. Of course I went through a blue phase and now have 11 blues lol. Gonna stop buying paint any day now, I can feel it. Haha.

FYI, Daniel Smith Mayan Dark Blue is PB82 and their other Mayan Blue Genuine is a Primatek color. Mayan Orange hasn't been given a pigment number, but is listed at artiscreation.com/orange.html#mayanorange as MayaChrom Orange and seems to have been trademarked by some company, which may be why it isn't in the pigment index.

Interesting about it not being able to make vibrant purples with this palette! Personally i find purples overwhelming. Maybe I should use them for neutralizing oranges and yellows, but it would probably just muddy them up. I think Castagnet mostly paint urban scenes. Do you think the colours might behave differently then? Maybe try them on an urban painting?

I add them to greens and earth tones. Very muted effect.

@@mindofwatercolor Thanks! Will try it out. I know Jerry Yarnell does that in acrylics. I have tried it in acrylics, but with varying success. Some pigments are quite strong, though. Dioxanine purple or cobalt violet? Any suggestions?

I was wondering how you deal with 'dirtying' your other colors when mixing, and how do you clean them to minimize waste? Am I overthinking it? Lol just looking at the puddle of green on top of the yellow is giving me anxiety. For reference I know almost nothing about painting ha.
@mindofwatercolor

If I need the color pure then I clean it off with a wet brush. If not I don’t worry about it. Waste is negligible. Watercolor is one of the most efficient mediums out there.

at end of a painting session, i often flush the entire palette and wipe off the 'dirty' paint wells. Also, for light colors, such as yellow, i only put out what i need for that painting.
@Roslyngal

If it helps your anxiety, consider devoting 2 paint wells to the lighter colours that ‘contaminate’ easily, like yellow. Use one for mixing, keep one pristine for when you need ‘pure’ yellow. Solved! Don’t worry, not everyone can stand a muddy palette. For goodness’ sake don’t look up Charles Evans watercolourist on youtube. His palette will shock you to your core 🤣.

Hey Steve Burnt Siena Light is PR101+PO48, not PBr7.
@everartokelli
@everartokelli 4 жыл бұрын
According to my tube, it's PR101 and PO48, too. It's a nice color, I use it with Blue Apatite Genuine to mix a great warm grey neutral, it also neutralizes well with Prussian Blue or Cobalt Blue. It's more orange and less granulating than DS Burnt Sienna, but not quite as orange as the Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna.

Not sure that is right about not being able to mix a good vibrant green. You should be able to get a lovely mid (sap/hookers) green from viridian and hansa yellow deep. Viridian is the secret sauce for natural but vibrant greens.

I would Recomment those heavy Bijou palettes like winsor's or blocks and fill those with 6 single pigment colors. Own your mixing skills and color theory. As fun as having so many colors is; it doesn't make you a better painter. Invest in decent quality paper and a GOOD quality Brush is more important at this stage since you need to learn to rely on your mixes. You can't when your paper works like crap,I made that mistake;trust me you endup regretting it,paperwise.
