I live in the northwest and near the coast we have many forests with trees like this. I’ve always been fascinated and wanted to paint them. Thank you Steve, love this!
@pamelamarydesigns221 сағат бұрын
My first thought was in order to make any of these techniques work, you need to know WHERE to put the shadows, etc. To this beginner, I think that's key
@mindofwatercolor18 сағат бұрын
@@pamelamarydesigns2 and for that I would say observation, painting from life and good reference is the key.

Dear Mr. Mitchell, I’ve spent the past month with you as my constant companion. I’ve gone through every video multiple times; first, to enjoy your beautiful work; second, to try to understand the principles you’ve gently taught; and third, to hear the nuance of technique and vision you’ve helped me to understand. I thank you from my heart’s bottom for your “company,” your positive vibe, and for sharing your wealth of experience, talent and skill. You’ve opened a new world for me.

I have used Microns for years, but my arthritic hands do not like them anymore. Can you recommend a waterproof alternative? Thanks!
@awatercolourist23 сағат бұрын
Hello! What is it that you don’t like about Microns? Is it the felt tips? If it’s the felt tips then you can try searching for liner pens that have a plastic nib. I hear they are smoother, but I have never tried them. You could try a fountain pen. A good pen store will let you try pens in-store.
@romaisblooming23 сағат бұрын
@ I love Microns, but find that the slender shape makes my hand hurt because of how I hold them. I have used Lamy and Pilot fountain pens but miss the fine lines that are achievable with microns. My Pilots never leave the house because I am afraid to lose them, and the Lamy’s are not capable of fine lines. I am in search of a replacement for the Microns for that reason also.
@BornAgainFarmGirl22 сағат бұрын
Arthritis makes it very difficult to hold small things so I really think that’s what she was talking about when it comes to the micros.
@awatercolourist22 сағат бұрын
@ Hi! Thanks for the explanation.

@@romaisblooming Have you considered the Uniball Air micro pen? It’s somewhat more chunky than a Micron fineliner.

HI Stephen! I've been practicing these exercises quite regularly and done 30+ swatches and done value charts for every one of them. I'm pretty decent at flat washes in small areas, but just beginning to work on larger areas. Do you have a video focused on custom hues? I'm trying how to figure out how to create a custom hue, not cross contaminate my pans, and then create a sufficient pool to have sufficient amounts of that custom hue for a painting. If you could point me to one, I'd be so grateful! I was attempting to create a color blend chart with just 6 hues and quickly got into issues keeping them separate! Thanks for any where you can point me for help. Your fan, Margie

Hi again. I have a question about the indigo color. Do you know if they have stabilized it in such a way that it is safe on the cotton paper? I've done indigo dyeing for years, using natural & powdered indigo. To get the blue color from the plant, you have to go through a process of making an indigo reduction vat. Sadly that includes a chemical called "Thiourea Dioxide." This is the only way I know of to dissolve the color so it will mix with the water and bond to your fiber. It's fascinating, because when the fabric goes in the vat, it comes out green. Gorgeous sage green, that immediately starts changing to blue, due to oxidizing or oxidation. We always had to rinse the fiber repeatedly to keep the chemicals from damaging the fiber over time. I'm just wondering how Maimeri has locked down the process to be a stable blue shade without any green overtones or any changes just from the air, much less from any light. Also, do you think it's Ph neutral? I'm just wondering are there any chemicals in there that would be considered alkaline? Thanks, TS

Sir, you just schooled me beyond anything else I've found online. It seems like most people doing this always leave something out, or comes as an added bonus with a paid course. You my friend are direct and your examples are fantastic. I'm a acrylic painter who began watercolor last year. The first few attempts were a disaster Once I learned that paper is the most important thing, second to paint, then brushes...I've been able to have some ok results. I'm painting with a split cool/warm palette of primaries, with payne's grey and umber. My colores are permanent red, ultramarine, permaent yellow deep - crimson red, cerulean blue, lemon yellow...with the payne's and umber. Any suggestions? I'd welcome any thoughts on this palette.
@kamanzo20663 күн бұрын
There are very different Payne Grey. Some of them are blue, but some are rather grey. I love paynes grey, but the best for me is Winsor Newton, the blueish one.

NOTE!: I misspoke about tear off pad quality. The pads are the same paper and quality as sheets and blocks.

Is the "tear off" Arches really not as good as the block? I thought it was the same paper, just not glued on sides.

It is. I misspoke. I made a correction in the comments. Other paper brands sometimes do it but not Arches.

Hello Steve :) I've been watching you for years and am still in awe of how much you have contributed to all of us in the world of creative arts. Thank you so much! You are a truly generous master. I had never seen this video until today, and it has to be one of my all-time favourites. Sharing your own difficulties with this piece and all that you did to try to address your own initial lack of love or slight disinterest in it was just brilliant. I learnt so much.
