What happens in a controlled setting may not be able to be duplicated in the wild. Wild does not have same control methods enclosed methods have.

Mother monkeys often leave babies with aunt or other to care for baby especially when it getting nearer time when they should be away from mother more and exploring and getting ready to wean. Some babies absolute hate it and will fight the carer and that often ends up with a bit of discipline being given by the career. One thing the social ranking of the troop is when they are left to babysit the one thing that makes then a big failure and can hurt their ranking in teh tribe is if baby goes back to mom before mom comes to get baby. This often means that if the baby is really difficult to keep holding that they have to apply any means then can so that baby does not get back to mom before mom is ready, even if it means dragging a baby that is protesting loudly far away so baby cannot see mom. This is all very normal and part of growing up monkey. Of course sometimes, especially if the monkey left to babysit is iinexpoperienced in the baby getting knocked about a bit but that too is normal. That baby has a few short months to learn a lot of things socially as well as physically and this is all part of the process. no it is not how you would treat your new baby but that is because you are human and not a monkey. A good rugh drag across the ground is teaching baby that they are better off hanging on and dealing with a babysitter than carrying on so. Sort of like a good spanking. They are not permanently hurt but they get the message pretty quickly and notice after being dragged they are more than happy to grab onto the carere and be carried. Might look rough to you but its how babies learn and one way to get them to start separating from mom.

Most youth learns real early to stay out of sight of the "teen" monkeys. The mother's do not dare intervene until they realise the baby needs nursing, usually breasts hurting and they realise suckling will ease their pain. It's all just survival in the wild. We try to put human emotions to the troop and it is not always right.

I have attended several lectures from Jane Goodall and she seems to be spot on from what she has said. All offspring are subject to beatings from Mom's but the males are treated best by mom because they instinctively know their time is limited with each other. DD is still a high ranking female and expected to take her role seriously. When she has an offspring she will most likely become a protective mother because of her rank. If you have studied these behaviors you will understand what I'm speaking of. Please understand their is nothing tame about these monkeys. They are just tolerant and that is all. Food or no food. VO yesterday feeding mom and baby and baby jumped in man's lap, mom hissed and grabbed baby very quick. I have a feeling one day you are going to see an entire troop attack a human because if the "tame" thinking. I'm surprised it hasn't happen already. When I speak of mother's breast becoming sore I'm not speaking of mastitis. I'm speaking of soreness from over filled breasts where milk needs to be expressed. Mom's know by instinct and fullness of breast she needs to feed to relieve soreness, not extreme pain. The Macaque that had a tear over her left breast allows her infant to suckle on that side because it helps to relieve pain. It will also decrease swelling and allow the wound to granulate from inside out. Hopefully it will not become infected.

THat happened the other day in a fight where Dolly and DeeDee went after Dana. They bit her until she bled and at the same time digging underneath her to get Daniela they must have dug their nails on her face. Since Marcus was defending Dana and the baby, Dolly was the instigator.

THat is a prime example what I have been saying. Macaques don't hold grudges. Grooming is also used for conflict resolution.
