Oh, oh, I love this "runner-up better than the winner" game! :-D So, let me add some examples (following my personal taste, naturally) - UK '61, Sweden '66, Israel '83, Ireland '84, UK '89, Iceland '99 (wink), Belgium '03... and date I say Italy '74, too?

I like many of the songs from 1986. This is however the best song from that year in my opinion. It is more stylish than my other favorites from that year.

Mmm... Listening more closely to this performance, I'd say you have a point about her vocal. Maybe I hadn't noticed it before because the melody is so strong in my ears that it pushed aside such concerns. And let us not forget that this was written by the same team who'd do "Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi" 2 years later - and while it may not be such an instant classic as that one (and Daniela is certainly no Celine!), it comes quite close, IMO.

From '83 onwards I'm familiar with and agree with all those, and I'm not just saying it. Gigliola was also amazing in '74. Also Poland in '94, Germany in '80 and '81 and I'm spent for the moment.

Vocal doesn't have to be everything. I love many songs whose vocals weren't that astounding either. But I say they always help.

French seemed to be the language that year, with the top-3 all in French. This song has an appeal... but Daniela is not the singer for it, imo. Sure she's beautiful but her voice is not for this song. Even if the voice was better this still wouldn't be my favourite. I like Luxemburg's song and performance much better.

Sure she does, but in my opinion her vocal performance isn't that astounding. This is indeed a great song; nice emphasis on the piano, great lyrics, too. But this is a song that I feel lacks the proper singer for it, sadly.
