Dresden is a member of the white council, hell he's a full grey cloak warden, so definitely NOT a fringe mage

In defense of the White Council and Wardens: there are reasons for why they are so harsh. Butcher has said that part of the reason fans have such a negative view of the Council is that we are experiencing them through Harry's eyes, and he obviously has a negative view of them. We don't see how scary Harry is to the Council (and frankly the people of Chicago), though it is eluded to in a couple of books. But, later in the series, as we start to get to know Morgan and other Wardens a little, we learn that the Laws of Magic were made out of hard-fought (and bloody) experience. I think (but don't condone) the Council views people who break the laws of magic not unlike how we view animals who have eaten human flesh: once they have a taste for it, it is too likely they will come back for more.

Is it cliche that the senior council is given the title Merlin? not really because the original Merlin, THE Merlin, founded it.
