i think this books success is testament the philosophy of “ideas are cheap” and how it’s all in the delivery. yes it’s nice to have interesting concepts but pacing, action, dialogue, characterisation, description etc in the end is more important

I'm a bit of a fanboy for the series, and you nailed it. nothing it does is particularly new or unique, but it's all so wonderfully fleshed out and detailed, with interesting characters (especially roran and mutaragh) that elevates it to another level for me. I don't read it for the themes, but for the characters and the world.

I reread this series again about a year ago, shortly before I went to college. I honestly hated the first book, for it's blandness and lack of originality, but I loved the series by the time I finished the fourth book. I feel like the books grew up with the author, and he got much better at the craft after the first two books. Edit: I also loved the way this series did magic. Most magic systems in fantasy make no sense, and are written as plot devices. I loved how the magic system in this series worked in a logical way, with logical results. It makes sense for why the characters have to say the spells out loud, and it makes sense why characters can't just rip down castles when they want to. It's great.

Yeah that's the one really unique thing in this series that keeps me coming back. I've reread the series a couple times and I still quite like it. I read it first when it came out and most recently I read it about a year ago and while he did use a lot of source material I feel like there were some seriously original ideas.

It still holds so much nostalgia for me, so I appreciate it's place in my journey to loving fantasy. I don't think he's published anything besides this series. It ended up getting my brother into reading fantasy as well. I actually only finished the series 4ish years ago because I guess I just never picked up the third book.

See I feel a lot of people share that exact sentiment. We recognize it isn’t boundary pushing, but it’s solid. Does what it supposed to do very well, and nothing else. Which is great! Not everything has to strive to be epic, high, boundary pushing fantasy.

This series hold a lot of value for me. I picked up the first book after a friend told me it was good. My dad found me reading it, asked what it was about. I told him. He sprung up, happier than I'd seen him all year, and ran off only to come back a few moments later with a dusty old copy of The Hobbit in his hand, which he then presented to me. He had been waiting for me to find the world of fantasy, but it was Paolini and Eragon that showed me the way in.

Yes, Paolini took a lot of inspiration from many sources, most prominently Star Wars. The plot is quite similar. However, for me, it makes it a lot more intersting to read than Star Wars, LOTR, HP, or any other fantasy series. of course, there were small moments in the series that I didn't really appreciate, but those are just minor nitpicks. on the whole, while not original, this Quadrilogy is one of the greatest series of all time. Reread it many times, and my opinion on it has not changed

I dont think what you said about "the big evil bad guy" just being evil is right. Galbatorix started as a typical bad guy driven by jealousy and violence, but as a king he actually had an agenda that was somewhat justified. Mages are incredebly overpowerd compared to normal people. And there is nobody who has justification over Mages if not the King. The only flaw in his Plan was that there was no juristication above him. If i remember correctly he even realized that, but thought that somebody has to do that job. After he told his motives to Eragon i was like "hell yeah, thats a really smart idea. Defeat the king for his crimes then use this name to nullify magic and then you leave over the ocean to raise dragons away from civilistation so no new mages can arise"

@jimmyfortuna-peak4639
@jimmyfortuna-peak4639 Жыл бұрын
@@pranavreddy817 Ok so the flaws in my opinion depend on how much fantasy you've already read. Eragon is a very simple story with simple to semi-complex characters. It has huge influences from Lord of the Rings and feels like it could have been written in the 80's during the Tolkein era. If you are very familiar with a lot of other fantasy books, it's gonna feel very unoriginal. If you are new to fantasy, it's a good place to start but honestly, I can think of other book series as well that are even better starts (Mistborn, Lightbringer, Riyria, etc..). This was one of the first fantasy series I ever read so I had nothing else to compare it to so I enjoyed it quite a bit. The pros are also very simple and you can tell paolini was a kid when he wrote it. Impressive all the same though! Hope this all helps and enjoy the journey!

My entrance into Fantasy depends on what you would call the entry point. As a child I read the Brother's Grimm fairy tales. Not including the obvious stories like Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, etc., there are actually some fascinating, fun, and very gory tales inside of it. When I grew up some more, I watched the LOTR films. Soon after I read the Hobbit and the LOTR books, both of which I enjoyed tremendously. This was around the age of 13. At 14, my book-loving cousin introduced me to Eragon, and the rest of that series. Finally, just last year I found Brandon Sanderson, and that is what has really started to refuel my love for the fantasy genre. There have been other minor fantasy series and books along the way, but Sanderson is what has really gotten me into the genre again. TL;DR: Fairy tales, Tolkien, Eragon, Sanderson.

Late to this as I just found you while reading WoT. Paolini stole almost everything for Inheritance from David Eddings, who he STILL touts on his website as his biggest influence and favorite author. Even whole pages are taken straight from Eddings and put into Inheritance almost word for word. Too much to go into here... but even the ending, defeat, of the tyrant was taken from Eddings.

My first fantasy experience was WOT. Really dating myself here, but I was handed the first book in a Barnes and Noble when I was maybe 13 by a relative. That was my introduction to reading for fun, outside of stuff for school. I completely became immersed in the world and I remember sometimes in the summer I would just lay in bed and read, until my mom thought I was sick or something. It was quite a journey to finish the last book, thanks to Mr. Sandy Branders having the courage to strap on those big shoes. I'm 160k words into my own epic fantasy now, and I've taken a lot of inspiration from Jordan (and other authors I've read since), especially in his wordbuilding, which I don't think anybody past or present has surpassed. If I can make my wordbuilding even half as good as his was, I'll call it a success.

If you want to take another work as your inspiration, and use that inspiration as the basis on which to build a good and original story, then great. Lots of authors have done that. Paolini could have taken part of the _Star Wars_ story which had been hinted at but never really explored (especially since he started writing before the prequels came out) and translated it to a medieval fantasy setting. He could have told the whole history of the Dragon Riders: how they were formed, how the order grew and developed, how they started to crumble and how they ultimately fell. But no, he instead just made that the backstory exactly like it is in _Star Wars_ itself and recycled the plot of _A New Hope_ in Middle-Earth.

OMG. You are soooo young in this. I'm used to your current format but kudos to your videos then. And your hair is so blond! Ding... :D (Just finished watching the movie again on YT. It was still great, even though it reprised the Rand and Wheel of Time all over again trope.

A joke? Wow... So the book community is more ruthless than I thought. I read Eragon when I was 12 years old, my mother thought it was about Aragorn from the Lord of the Rings lmao but it became my favorite book immediately anyways, I enjoyed the whole saga incredibly. I have reread it as an adult a thousand times and I still love it a lot. When I emigrated from Europe to the United States I took the COMPLETE saga with me, my whole life in two suitcases. Now my copies are falling apart from reading them over and over again but they're my legacy to my kids. Thank you Christopher.

My gateway into Fantasy as a genre was J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbit. Mainly because my father owned a leather back copy of it, which he had owned since before I was born.

I feel it necessary to point out that erahon was a flagrant Mary Sue. Learned to swordfish in 3 months. Learned to read in 2 weeks. Paolini self described as a genius. The plot of eragon is literally just star wars a new hope farming edition. Literally EVERYTHING was stolen. It is trash. Having said that, I enjoyed it when I was little.

The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini. What I sew as unique and what I think makes it stand out. The inside the Christopher had into what 12-20 old kids would have thought and felt. I think it would be hard to recall/re-create as a 20+-year-old man. Seeing how a kid imagines the world and the way imagines what and where conflict comes from. To where a young adult finds conflict and the way they overcome it. The mental growth of Aragon is something I truly enjoy and I feel it is unique to the Inheritance Cycle. I know they are problems with the books. I just try to see then as a perspective change from a kid to an adult. Maybe I am wrong.

Watching this because I attempted to read it and didn't even make it halfway through before stopping. What a slog. I get why kids might enjoy it, but as an adult who has no nostalgic ties to this novel, I really... really hated it.

Imo Eragon was a weak entry but from eldest to inheritance the books are amazing. I noticed you mentioned you hadent even finished the series in your interview with Christopher. How can you even have an opinion on the series then ?

I can't say your review has anything wrong with it, but it definitely misses a much bigger picture. Some of the biggest and most honored fantasy or sci-fi books copy tropes and story structures. Tolkien's books, star wars, and so many others copy almost scene by scene the hero's journey. To fault the inheritance cycle for this is almost hypocritical. What differentiates the top tier books from the more mediocre ones is the small details and sometimes theme. I've read many of the more honored fantasy books that have their specific places and things they do really well, but I can't say I like Tolkien's or other stories better than I do Paolini's. Other authors definitely write better, but Paolini really captures something in characters that others don't.

I think that in all honesty, I cannot care much about borrowed plot points as long as it's in another world and another setting. Because otherwise it means we can't have the farmer boy being attacked again, or a character becoming one's father, etc etc. It's okay to have repetitions. It's what sets two stories apart that makes something great, I like the awkward, clumsy written romance between Eragon and Arya, and up until the end, it hurts to see how it "ended". At least, it is different from other books. That is not what I can say about other books. Similarly, the world building although probably borrowed, is slightly different. I don't think a notion of eldunari exists in another source... That just shows how imaginative the author was. Although many plot points are borrowed, there are very few instances as a reader where I was frustrated the hero acted as an ignorant during a fight or tight moment. Something that constantly happens in the Harry Potter series (I love it btw) in every single book as well as others fantasy books.

yeah, I did not like this book at all, for some of the reasons outlined. I bought the physical book because we have really limited book selections in my country so I mostly buy e-books but I like getting younger audience books so I can pass them on to my nephews and nieces. When my cousin asked how it was when he saw me reading it, my comments were that I felt like I was reading something from when I started fantasy books back in the 80s and it felt really dated that way because genre fiction has come a really long way since then. However, as you've pointed out, I as an older, more experienced reader am not the target audience. I passed it on to my 13-year-old nephew and he ate it up so even though I didn't finish the series, I bought the rest of it for my nephew who loved it and it got him into fantasy and as he's gotten older, I've introduced him to more diverse and inventive fantasy. It's actually his birthday today and I'm running the first D&D game for him and his friends on roll20 so I'm not going to diss a series that is a good introduction to the genre for younger readers.

I have a lot of fondness for this series. A lot of people constantly point out that Paolini took from other stories and placed it in his book. While it isn't untrue, I do always defend it by saying that stories like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings aren't entirely original either as both stories have been told (obviously without the same characters and world specifics) since the beginning of storytelling. Whether it was accidental or intentional, I do congratulate Paolini for taking stories that have stood the test of time and using them to create the textbook example of fantasy.

I started this one more than a decade ago. I got to the part where the main character is left alone and comes under attack by an entire army. He gets an arrow ready to fire. Suddenly, he knows a spell in another language and- boom- army dead. Nice job, kid. Left it in the bottom of my locker for the rest of the school year. It was totally trashed by that time. I put it where it belonged.

Thank you for clearing this up for me. Eragon was by far my favorite book until I discovered Sanderson, but I've started to look back on it in a more negative light as I've been thrust into the epic uniqueness of Wheel of Time, the Cosmere, etc. This video has un-ruined my fantasy childhood.

People don't like Eragon because the only reason it got as big as it did is that he was so young when he wrote it. If an adult had wrote it, nobody would have cared, and rightfully so. Sorry, but that's the truth. It's a mediocre, generic fantasy. Pretty good for a kid, but completely unremarkable when compared with other works.

I remember really liking the first book since it's basically A New Hope. As early as the second book it became apparent that the series was never going to grow beyond the cookie cuter mold it fits in which was disappointing. I do agree that it can serve as a nice introduction to Fantasy but even in that capacity I don't know that it's the best option. On an only mildly related tangent the movie adaptations is super bad and should never be watched by anyone ever.
