The UK paperbacks baffle me. But here’s an explanation. So first: When they first come out there’s a hardback as you’d expect, then a big paperback the same size as the US ones. Then after a couple of moths they bring out the two normal ones. The centres ones, like 9:01, are the bigger covers and look really nice. They’re what I have except for way of kings (we’re getting to that). Sitting in two isn’t common at all in the UK, I can only think of a handful of other editions that have done it. There’s longer books, in fantasy and in general, that aren’t split in two or made into tall paperbacks. I know Sanderson has said that it makes them better for the UK market and I’d be interested to know what he means by that or if someone just told him that. He might be getting confused with elsewhere in Europe, of the places I’ve been Germany does it and maybe Austria? But someone from those countries would be better answering because I’m just going with what I’ve seen on holiday. It’s definitely not normal practice in the UK at least. Maybe the big paperbacks weren’t selling but in that case why split them in two instead of just making them normal sized and why continue to sell the bigger ones? The big ones don’t fit on the shelves in some Waterstones so maybe it has something to do with that? Which okay I get. However, the dark way of kings ( 8:48 )one is a normal sized book height wise, just thick. So I don’t understand why they didn’t do that for the others. The dark way of kings cover is an older edition before they changed the covers but is still easy to buy in shops. I wish they’d kept going with it for the rest of the series. Both height wise, for the design and the fact it’s not split into two. I don’t actually know if it’s possible to buy the whole series consistently in the UK. I don’t because I have the old way of kings cover then the big paperbacks. I guess if you’ve bought the split covers then you could? I’m not actually sure how the prices work out? I think the last one was £16.99 for the big paperback then £8.99 each for the normal ones? Something like that. So there you go. I’m aware that doesn’t help much. We’re all confused over here too.

I can only speak of the german versions we have here in Switzerland. It's litteraly insane. So many big fantasy series are split. ASOIAF? Bam, 10 Books. WoT? 36, here you go. Stormlight? 6. Oh, and you pay like 25 bucks for one. Not kidding.
@lilibellenada75194 жыл бұрын
Raffael Steinmann. I think I know why German translations are most often split into two parts: texts in German are often much longer than the same text in English. I don‘t know if we need more words to say the same thing as the English do, or if we have more letters in our words... Either way, the German books get sooooo large. Imagine the US Oathbringer (I think it has roughly 1200 pages?) and then the German version would probably have a few hundred more.
@MsBlulucky4 жыл бұрын
Well yes, Germany does that, but still it's not that common. I only know that it happend to ASOIAF (and since I didn't want pay 10*16€ I just bought an english box set for 25€ total 😅) Page count is one reason, but I mean, I've got the German translation for LOTR as one single book which is 1300 pages long. So it's not like it's impossible to make such tombs. My guess is that it's both the page count and just plain capitalism...

For the UK basically what happens is that the book gets sold in one single hardcopy then has a limited release as a single paperback before then getting split into two. I can't remember the exact reason for this but I vaguely remember reading about it being cheaper to print as two books in Europe. A similar happened with ASOIAF where both A Storm of Swords and A Dance With Dragons were split into two.

The International Covers are absolutely INFURIATING. I have some mild OCD tendencies so when i bought Stormlight 1 & 2 it pissed me of so much that they don't MATCH. Seriously. One is shorter one is longer, the placement of the author/book title is different on each. This was a problem since they came out. I seriously don't understand how, knowing there will be 10 books in the series you don't do something incredible like they did with Shadowhunters for example. They have released a cover update now, but I can see that they have no plans of making the spines match.. Pretty sure they're doing this so some people (like me) will buy the books twice.. otherwise it makes no sense.

I *love* the RoW cover. I haven't got any idea what in the Tranquiline Halls is happening there, but like, the squares remind me of gems, Adolin is probably looking over Shadesmar in wonder, Shallan is holding a mysterious smol orb, and while you thought she looked scared, I thought she looked curious and maybe a bit worried, but not in immediate danger, which is why Adolin wouldn't be doing anything. The ground they're standing on is waves turned to stone, the plants are otherworldly, and who knows, maybe some aliens pop up and drop a monolith on Roshar... I suppose the other reason a monolith would be there is that it's a Fablehaven crossover and the monolith is the Obsidian Wastes vault from book five... or... I've got it, the monolith is some building in Shadesmar, since I think that picture is in Shadesmar, especially after hearing what they wanted the art of the cover to be. I have no idea what they're *doing* in Shadesmar, I don't even own any cosmere books other than WoK, which I got yesterday, but whatever. I can't wait to read RoW, though I probably will have to wait... until Christmas, at least. The sea behind Shallan and Adolin is spotted and many-colored, like a sea of orbs- just like Shadesmar is described to have. Then Shallan is wearing that beautiful havah, speaking of which, I really need to hide my safehand, and Adolin's outfit is amazing. Shallan's dress has a glove, which is a lot more practical than those sweepy long sleeves that sound like so much fun, and I think that does show that she is changing, and practicality is certainly important. His sword looks beautiful, and also, the rainbow that he's sitting on... I wonder what that is... there are the little white teardrops, which could be some sort of light, or maybe a spren? The rocks that are waves really make me think of obsidian, I'm not exactly sure why. Obsidian is volcanic glass, and I guess the sort of rainbow reflective quality reminded me of glass, as well as Fablehaven's Obsidian Waste, which glowed with an inner rainbow light that only Kendra could see, since she was fairykind (oh look, that popped up again in this long paragraph... I apologize for writing an essay, but that's how things go when I explain things... True Sanderfan: writes much more than expected. True me: writes much more than expected then realizes there's a funny tangent in the middle) Then at the bottom left of the rock behind Shallan with the squares, there's a circle with a weird squiggly on it, and I'm pretty sure it means something but I have *no idea*. ok, so that was all in a weird order, I spewed my thoughts onto here as I noticed new details... I will change the order of the sentences and that's what you will see, also, if you read that whole thing, props to you! I seriously kept zooming in a ton and looking for details... plus, you have my confusing thoughts stuck in there as well. I have no idea how to break that up in a way that makes more sense or to separate it into sections since my thoughts flowed together in a torrential downpour. ok I think that's organized a bit better

For some reason, whenever a new Stormlight book comes out, it's in a single volume, but after the initial release, it seems they move to the two volumes version, which is all you can find in bookstores about a year after release. It's actually kinda irritating, because I like having consistent versions, and I have a single Oathbringer, but can't get a copy of WoK or WoR unless I buy it split, which bothers me. Which... maybe is part of the point? Like: "Hey, buy this limited edition now, or else you can never get this version/edition ever again and you will be forever doomed with an incomplete/inconsistent set." (I'm Aussie, by the way, but I'm pretty sure it's the same in the UK, since we also get the UK covers and the split-in-two thing.)

9:34 I think the muddled, hazy colors make sense, seeing as Scadrial is constantly covered in ash - I like that the artist portrayed that 11:44 Vin looks like a Spy Kid to me, posing with her shoulders thrown back like that lmao

Even if I don't agree with all of Daniel's inebriated art criticism, this was a lot of fun! I love that the audience for this channel is so passionate about books that most of the comments are about cover art and not how adorkably hot drunk Daniel is. LOL! 😅❤️

I really like how smart and clean the UK ones are, also I think in UK you have the option of buying them together or separately. That's why the Way of Kings had three options :).

UK paperback is split into 2 cuz it helps the binding. Even Storm of Swords and Dance with Dragons was split into 2.

I rate this video 6/10 -4 points for not drunk enough (No slurred speech, coherent sentences, overall it feels like you could still drive)

My favorite is The Way of Kings as well. In fact, I have a 24x36 print of it on my wall.

They've split all the SA books in Australia too and they sell for the same as a regular book. It annoys me a lot.

The Way of Kings -Why is there so many onions scattered across the rockface behind that knight? Guess I'll have to read the book to find out.

Pretty sure there are 2 UK versions, the splits and the single volume SA. The ones you showed later are the single volume.
