Ok so this has been on my to read list and I started The Eye of the World last night. Got to chapter 3 and I am really enjoying it. One of the criticisms I hear is Roberts descriptions can be too much and It may be too early to tell for me yet but so far his way of writing paints such a vivid picture in my mind, I love it. I haven't stopped thinking about the snowy town all day today and can't wait to get back to it. Only thing I can nip pick at is only chapter 3 and there has been like 50 character names thrown at me haha.

Wheel of Time is the best fantasy series ever in my opinion. I'm very widely read and yet I always come back to read again and fall in love over and over (and get deeper hate for certain characters). Also as I've continued down my path toward mental health counseling, I get deeper insight into the characters and discover new things each time. I LOVE this series.

I started reading the Wheel of Time when I was 14 years old. I finished it at age 36. In between I reread the first several books at least 5 times to refresh my recollection. It's not actually my favorite series ever but it has a place in my life that is unique and matters a lot. Few other things are meaningful aspects of one's life from ages 14-36. In that time I graduated from highschool, college and law school; met and broke up with my first love, had a child, married and divorced twice.... I mourned finishing that last book like someone I loved had died, which, of course, was true.

Honestly, though, I'm not sure who I "pity" the most... Lan with Nynaeve? Perrin with Faile? Or Rand, with Elayne, Aviendha, AND Min?! Come to think of it, that's one of the good points of the WoT series... it's chock full of incredibly strong women... and I don't seem to recall a SINGLE "Mary Sue" among them.
@mortuitissedai20853 жыл бұрын
@@Nyet-Zdyes Same lol, the fact that every single character had faults, made mistakes and lost fights was really refreshing after reading and watching some more modern stories. I especially like how nynaeve's brash and often arrogant character never really went away, even as the character evolved and matured-allowing a protagonist's weakness to continue. I think those kind of things were one of the main reasons why-after books 3-5, you could get really invested in the other characters, who had previously been more secondary to Rand. Wheel of time was ahead of it's time imo, with strong women and men as well as weak ones, likeable characters ranging from irresponsible and jokey, to disciplined and ruthless. Wheel of time isn't my favourite story, but it's definitely the one i consider most well written (that I've read) and it's still right up there with my faves anyways.

I'm almost jealous of you, being able to read it all at once... without having to wait for next book to be published... and reading it for the first time. If I may I would like to recommend the Safehold series for you when you finish WoT.

The Wheel of Time spends so much time fleshing out the entire cast that the main character is only in the third book for a couple of chapters. But he's still the main character of that book, because despite him not being there, the plot still revolves around him. It's incredible.

@@joecourtney8552 no, on the contrary it lets you experience other characters more deeply. It takes from LOR in that it starts with a group or party that eventually breaks up with each character having their own part to play in grand scheme of things. So each chapter usually covers a particular character. Yes some of the books will ignore a particular character except for a single chapter maybe at end.
@Kamishi8455 жыл бұрын
@@chadwhitfield6946 It depends on what you enjoy reading about, I think. In many ways the main character in WoT is more a concept than a character, and as such does not have to be present in order to drive a plot forward; however, it also makes the character itself feel more distant and less present as his characterization matters less over the concept he comes to represent. At least I found that to be true over time. Personally I could never finish WoT which was probably a combination of many things, with one of them being that I simply got burnt out reading fantasy at the time, but also that the large scale of WoT, over say, a more smaller-scale and personal story, made me lose interest. It does share a lot of similarities with A Song of Ice and Fire in that regard insofar that it's a very politically driven story with a humongous cast and that could be raised as a criticism against it, since it will be impossible to care for every character, and that sometimes less relevant characters end up stealing time from the main story that just doesn't have to be there. Even more so with Jordan, due to his detailed writing style. I began to really lose interest in WoT around the books where Rand took more and more of a backseat in favor of the political intrigue which occurred around him, and I never got around reading Winter's Heart and the final book as a result. To me, which I found the most interesting in the end was the psychological tension within Rand's mind, and when that was removed from being a major plot detail, I thus lost interest, as huge political conflicts just don't interest me a lot. Not too surprisingly I'm more interested in stories that dip into cosmic horror and psychological tension such as psychological thrillers than I am high fantasy as a result. And while Harry Potter too has a humongous cast, Rowling never went into the political conflict much of her world, which made it feel much more personal and real, and I think therein just lies the difference. It's the same reason I lost interest in GoT really quickly as no character spoke to me and the overall conflicts presented in the story also never appealed, either.
@chadwhitfield69465 жыл бұрын
@@Kamishi845 I think it helped me reading WoT in that I read the books as they came out. Because of that I had to wait a year or 2 to read the next book. I could def see how starting it now and being so much story could burn anyone out. Plus Jordan does repeat himself alot. It got to point I would skip whole paragraphs because I didn't need to read how some woman reacted when a handsome man walked in by straightening her shirt or hair instinctively. But you should def someday finish it. Sanderson def picks the pace up when taking over.

What I really noticed about the descriptions RJ uses is that they vary depending on which character we are having a POV from. Matt will notice wealth and how expensive things are, Rand tends to pay a lot of attention to swords and food being a farmer, Perrin often pays attention to how things are built like buildings or tools or how practical their clothing might be. Nyneave hilariously is the one we get so much dress detail from, the women who swears up and down she isn't obsessed with beautiful clothes but not so secretly is. It really adds to the characters unique voices.

Something forgotten: NO MARY SUES! EACH AND EVERY character grows organically in their strength and ability and off their own merits. No one gets it easy! ALL have to struggle and fight for their roles, positions, and power (both internal and external/political)! And everyone acts within their character to get them where they end up. It's a messy journey for all! With deep personal struggles as they change and grow during the evolution of themselves and the tale... STRONG FEMALSS: Incredibly well written and diverse female (and make) pro/antagonists! Magical elements that aren't magic weilders: part of the incredible world building is its use of multiple magical(ish) creatures and happenings... Loyal, the steddings, eye of the world, etc. And lastly: it's COMPLETELY UNIQUE idea of how the world is formed and how it works - ie ”the wheel weaves as the wheel wills” how the pattern of events and life is a tapestry of human, emotional, physical, and action oriented yarn! While heavily influenced by destiny, there is still the option for free will, the dark ones touch, balefire and the elements of taverin (sp?) to further shape events which ALL have realistic consequences. Even the idea of reincarnation in how it is presented makes logical sense (which can be true for the real world too...)

I remember finishing A Memory of Light and realizing for the first time in over a decade (I started the series after book 6 had been out so was able to catch up) I didn't have a Wheel of Time book on the horizon to wait for. I eventually started into Sanderson's books, but I recall it was such an odd feeling that it was actually over. I still go back and read some of the scenes over and over again. Not sure I'd rate it the best ever -- I think Tolkien holds that honor still for me, and the epic nature of Malazan is still stunning, but without a doubt it's one of the most influential fantasy series of all time.

Yeah, Tolkien has serious depth to his works. And, another literary work of magnificent depth and breadth is the Bible. Read through, read it again, read it again, read it again. I recently came across a chart that listed the length of various fantasy series. I was so shocked to see how much longer the Wheel of Time is compared to Discworld. Like, Discworld seemed incredibly long when I got into it, and now that I’m past a fourth of it, seeing the length of Wheel of Time was still jarring. I do fully intend to read it, I just don’t know where the hell I will find the time to. It might take me finishing high school and uni before I can even start it xD
@kd4yhs Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the length is attributable to excessive verbage given to certain extraneous scene details and individuals' feelings and shit. I skipped pages and pages and pages of such, as I read the series and I think the whole series could have easily been half the number of books.

Great video Daniel! Couldn't have said it better myself. Obviously, I feel the same way about the series. People don't know what they are missing out on by not reading these books. I think one of the nuanced things that you pick up even more after a couple re-reads is how well Robert Jordan does the "unreliable narrator" A bit of Holden Caulfield in each of the POVs we get from our characters. It can sometimes be infuriating for the reader because we have more information than the characters do, but they really don't see the same event the same way and he does such an excellent job of fleshing out the way these different perceptions would actually play out in the way the characters act on what they see. Another great video. Keep up the good work man and I'll see you at JordanCon!

While I think WoT is great, my problem with it is the sheer number of unlikeable main(ish) characters. I often find myself more entertained by reading chapters of characters that might have 1 pov in a book and then drag through several hundred pages of characters I just don't care about or straight up dislike. It makes it difficult to be in their heads.

I dunno. I think the first 2-3 books are fantastic, and once I got around to finishing the series I thought Sanderson delivered a much stronger ending than I expected. But in the middle it feels like a real slog - and by middle, I mean "most of 6-8 massive books." I've sometimes thought that I should give it another chance and start a reread, but each time somewhere in "The Fires of Heaven" or "Lord of Chaos" I feel like things are dragging with 9 or 10 books still to go. It's great that so many people are passionate about it, but it's not for me.

I very much enjoyed this honest analysis and, although I have not previously read any of Robert Jordan's books, I might now. Recently I have been thinking a great deal about the use of detailed descriptive passages in my own work. I generally use minimal description of objects/places/physical appearance, preferring to allow the reader's own imagination to do the work for me. My feeling is that, if allowed to visualize for themselves, readers will develop mental images that are more real/tangible. This also provides more room for me to focuss on plot, world-building and character development. I realise this makes me something of an outlier (in the fantasy genre at least).

Anyone else find the whole Aes Sadai thing getting a little bit silly. The amount of catty politics that goes on with the Aes Sadai i feel like nobody would actually take them seriously. I wish they were written at least slightly more humble, less sounding like high school popularity content. They are supposed to be this sort of all knowing, very wise, above a normal person type of thing and yet they come across as mostly immature and have an extremely inflated self image. Agreed. This series is a monolith in terms of the fantasy world. I admire so much about these books, but for my fellows who got burnt out after the first three, I do understand. I thought books 1-3 were awesome, and I felt like the resolution at the end of book three, with the addition of an epilogue, could have made for an amazing trilogy. I made it halfway through book six before getting burnt out. I was honestly so sad when I did, because I respect so much in this work, even through I couldn’t get through those books. It is clear that Robert Jordan loved his world, which I can really get behind myself. I am sure that the series continues to shine, with its world and character’s complexity and amazing flavor. For me, I’m pretty sure I know why I burnt out. I read these books in the seventh grade. At that time, I was reading YA and 70s/80s short fantasy novels, where the plot moves at a breakneck pace, and there is always action. I wasn’t used to the slower paced, detailed epic. Fast forward many years later, here I am, a wishful aspiring writer building my own worlds. I love being detailed and methodical with the history and and culture, and running my characters through them. I have a feeling that reading them again now would give me a very different experience than in the seventh grade. I think that if I tried it again, I could make it through to the end.

Ok so here is the thing im currently more than 3/4 through book 1 and honestly i dont like it, now please dont kill me on the spot, and let try me explain my 3 biggest problems with it(spoiler for book 1)and try to convert me hopefully: 1. I dont like the main Characters, they seem dull and uninspired, and only get dragged through the story, the first time they were acutally somewhat likeable was when Rand and Mat play music and juggle, as they are proactive, and not only reactive. Egwene is the most likeable from the getgo, Moiraine und Lan seem like the typical hypercompetent mystical Teachers, which is to much cliche for me. Merrilin was pretty good actually he was proactive had many flaws and got then got killed(or captured or anything i dont know, he just runs to the enemy through a group of people) Perrin seems ok..ish, i dont know he just seems pretty uninteresting appart from the wolf-talking(which seemed to be slaped on him to seem interresting) 2.Classic fantasy: Trolloks, big bad dark lor, mystical bad black riders(Myrddraal), a cursed treasure and so on, dont understand me wrong i love tolkien but i already had Lord of the Rings i dont need Lord of the Rings(Remake) 3. The Neverending Chase. like its just small city to small city to farm to farm to city with some small event happen every second city, im not exciting to read how they come hungry in the 50th city/farm looking for food and sleep and then have to flee early because some bad guy is in the city/farm, im just not rooting for anybody if they suddenly died all and get enslaved by the dark lord i wouldnt be mad. I Read online that there is some big twist in the first books, if its something like: Dark Lord = not so bad, Ais Sedai = Dark cult, i wouldnt be surprised. I hope that it gets better, im a huge long Story fan(im 800 novellas in a space operea that has currently published its 3000th novella of the series(german sci fi: Perry Rhodan), i also love Sanderson and the Cosmere i hoped to also like WoT, but even if the future books would be great i would still have the bad memories of pushing myself to read the first book. Any input? or is WoT just nothing for me?

Kleptomane Robert Jordan repeatedly said that he deliberately made the plot beats in the first book very similar to lotr. He wanted to highlight the innocence of village life, the reluctant adventurers, the group setting off together in relative safety before raising the stakes by separating them. He wanted it to feel familiar to the audience before turning it all on its head and make it more complex then the audience could ever imagine. As for characters, they grow up very quickly. They have to. Imagine if Frodo didn't have to destroy the one ring but instead had to take on Sauron himself. Imagine if instead of Sauron being largely unaware of Frodo's mission, he instead had people everywhere reporting on Frodo's progress. Imagine if the whole world knew who Frodo was and either wanted to help him or stop him. How would Frodo (and the peolple around him) deal?
@HikingPhalkawn5 жыл бұрын
Your points are valid, if you were to be looking at book 1 as a stand-alone piece of fantasy fiction. However, it has to be considered as the starting point for a piece of epic literature. Something of this scope cannot simply jump in and assume that the reader is ready for the 'good stuff'. The characters have to be established. Part of this is creating a believable scenario of their lives up to this point, and then the time of transition as they are pulled (mostly reluctantly) into this larger world within which they will be taking on world shattering roles. You do not take characters through that transition lightly, or quickly. To do so would be to produce a shoddy work not worthy of the reader's time. You have to see these characters being, as you describe, reactive, rather than proactive, until such time as they gain enough agency within the roles that they are playing to take that largely proactive stance. They do not stay that way for long, and by the 3rd book you will see mostly proactive type of behavior becoming the norm (though a certain necessity of reactive action have to be considered as well). The Trollocks and Myrddraal will remain through the series, but will be used more as tools of others, or somewhat elemental forces, rather than being the main threat constantly plaguing our heroes. The cursed treasure is a means to an end, and soon loses any parallel you might be feeling towards the One Ring from Tolkien's works. The Neverending Chase where the heroes are constantly on the run from a threat only lasts through about 2/4 of the first book (so about as far as you have read so far) before it changes. They go from running away from something to running towards something. And even that will wrap up in this first book (2nd book involves and entirely different chase - I mean the title is The Great Hunt after all, but it too wraps up in 1 book and is not really the entirety of the plot in that work either.) In summary, stick with it. As a long time fan of the Fantasy and Sci-Fi genres, having read a great variety of works, both good and bad, I can honestly say that Daniel's arguments are pretty spot on, but you have to apply them to the whole series. Yes there are parts that are better than others, but that will be a matter of personal preference for any reader as to how that applies. It is worth the read, and you will be both happy to have read it and sad that it is over once you come to the end.

@@geek_on_9159 The first book is really just an introduction to the characters and world, you are kind of learning it through their eyes. The twist is not what you think. One of the things I love about this series is the growth of the characters, they do change and evolve. Just about all the characters in this book get reintroduced later on. I would give it until the end of book two, Great hunt, before writing it off(so punny) the series.

@@jeremydanchuk1897 i read half of dragon reborn before stopping. There is just too much time given to characters i don't care about and there doesn't seem to be an interesting conflict, as our protag - Rand is barely given any time. So i believe when people tell me there is an awesome payoff, but right now i don't have time to read 14 books in the hope that something climactic and meaningfully interesting happens.

Since you feel so confident about your choice of best fantasy series, I'm going to be a total a*hole and suggest a few years worth of books to read before you make up your mind :-P These were specifically selected because (1) they're really good, and (2) I haven't heard you talk about them on your channel. * Stephen Donaldson: Chronicles of Thomas Covenant * Guy Gavriel Kay: The Fionavar Tapestry * Sean Russell: The Initiate Brother * Ian Irvine: View from the Mirror In truth, I don't think Wheel of Time should be named "best fantasy". It's long, and that it all it has going for it. It might have been 'best fantasy' if it hadn't been; the books needed far more rigorous editing, dropping irrelevant plot threads, scenes where Nynaeve tugs her braids, scenes describing one of the women's bodices, and scenes where Rand does _nothing_ for pages on end. There's a whole book (Crossroads of Twilight) you could skip, and not miss any plot development. The whole thing started out great, but after five or so books became a caricature of itself.

I stopped at the path of daggers. I was very fond of the books but Jordan just couldn't pull it together. The writing become tedious to read and the characters were just two dimensional figments by the time I quit. His writing of females always felt very cliched to me and it's something that I wish Sanderson was not so inspired by as all his women have been very very similar to Jordan's. All that to say he really had something special going on and I have heard that Sanderson ended it fairly well. Maybe one day I will jump back in and have a complete picture of it. I really love the genre and have been reading a lot of it for years now. I love the fact that this channel is reviewing all these books. I will definitely subscribe and continue watching. Thank you for your content

It's easier to read and do a marathon since all the books are finished now, and we don't have to wait a year or two between books. Brandon Sanderson is my #1 reason to re-read these books. I had also stopped at #8 years ago.

@@LoyaFrostwind in a genre that has some of it's best names taking almost a decade between books it's refreshing that he can publish so frequently. But sometimes it really shows in his work. There are passages in Oathbringer that make me really wish he would spend more time on his prose. I love his ideas but it's hard for me to get too excited for him when he seems to lose his commitment to quality work just to get things done. IDK I kinda hate bringing up Sandersons flaws to people because I really do believe in what he is doing but at the same time the quality if his writing and even most of his characters feel really rushed to me

Wonderful books, but the whole "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" relationship between men and women in the books is just horrible.
@jacobitewiseman36965 жыл бұрын
Yeah men and women are different. Society ran fine without feminism. The 1950s are not as bad as movies like to portray. Yes women had roles but beating them was actually frowned upon. And most men are not rapists.

It’s simply not true though dude, in the books everyone is constantly confused about the other gender. If you relate to that alright, but I really don’t think most people do.
