Hey Daniel, Just wanted to say thank you for all the info that you provided via this video. As soon as I pulled off the bottom cover the bolt fell out. I followed your exact directions and that took care of the problem. This problem was on my 1997 Ford Crown Victoria. The only amount that it cost me was $.54 for the 1/4 inch socket I purchased at my local pawn shop. Thanks again, you saved me a fortune! God Bless you for you taking the time to help all of us. I was driving down the interstate and that bolt fell out and landed near my foot. i put it in the cup holder and then this happened. The truck wouldnt shift into park unless i forced it. Took it to a mechanic and he told me it was the transmission cable and would cost me 850$ to fix. Watched this video and put the bolt in the missing hole and it works perfectly now.

I had a similar experience with a fuel injection rail, mechanic said it would be like 1200 for him to replace it because the rubber portion cracked. Went to autozone and got proper length fuel hose and two tapered clamps. Took my dremel tool and cut off the retaining clamps of the old hose to get it off. Replaced with new hose and clamps, fixed for $3. KZbin and Google make me a genius and a hero in my house lol.

Jon Floate Isn't youtube the best. I fixed a GE washer, which needed the steel drum replaced and a GE refrigerator, which needed a motherboard and relay. You saved me a lot of money, my wife's f350 had a really loose/sloppy column shifter that she took to the mechanic and they wanted over $800 dollars to fix. We couldn't afford that so she fought it for about a year, and I found your video...both bolts were there, but very loose. Tightened them up and all is fine now. Thanks, you're a life save (and my wife is very grateful too!) !!

Just had this happen to me a couple days ago. Thought for sure it was serious but being mechanically inclined thought I would look at it. After looking at it saw a hole with no bolt next to another one with a bolt. Looked the same. Until I watched your video I wasn't sure I could fix it. Took 5 minutes. I have a 2001 F350 so the front panel just pops off. Made it easier. Thank you so much for this video. Saved me a lot of time and cost. My wife cam home and said the van would not go in park. She also said she felt something fall from under the dash. I found a mystery screw in the floorboard, and Google search got me to the video that solved the mystery. Within minutes of contorting myself und the dash of the E350, everything was back to normal. You saved me a ton of money and even more so, no downtime on the van. The hardest part, besides bending myself in a ball, was finding my Torx bits.

I have 2000 Excursion that started doing this, and got worse over time. The Ford parts guy offered to sell a rebuild kit for the shift shaft and if I could not do the work myself, the service department could put the kit in for me. I knew something else was going on, and your video was the first I clicked on in a shift shaft search. I will now go out and take a look, and I bet as mine is doing what you showed, mine has the same problem. Thanks for taking the time to post the video, Jim.

You saved me spending monday chasing a mechanic and probably a load of cash. THANK YOU!!

Just wanted to express my gratitude for you making this video. I have a 1993 crown vic (it's old , but faithful) and it had the exact same symptoms as your excursion. I watched your video, got up under the dash and found one of the bolts was hanging on by a couple of threads and the other was about half way out. I permatexed the bolts, tightened them and that solved the problem in it's entirety. If not for your video then I would have kept thinking I needed to get a new transmission. Great job..

Awesome Mr. Jaeger, great fix. Same thing happened on the Ford Taurus shift column. I thought it was the cable, the car would go into Nuetral or Reverse but not into Drive. I would have to get out of the car and open the hood to shift into Drive. I did have to remove the driver seat so I could lay down and look up under the dash on the Taurus, and I was able to see the bracket with the one bolt totally missing and the second bold was about to fall right out altogether. And just like in your video, the bold was laying on the carpet and it was in fact a Number 30 Torx head Capscrew. Great video and totally awesome fix. I found this video by Googling the search term "Cannot shift into Drive on my ford taurus", and your video was the first hit. So thanks a million, as one of the other viewers said "You are the man".

THANK YOU! My low mileage Aerostar was bad when I got it last year. I suspected the bushing at the transmission end of the cable. It got worse, and I poked a camera underneath the van this week, when it could only choose Neutral and Drive. The bushing was OK, so I checked KZbin and found your video. This was the first repair I've done in years that didn't require at least two trips to the parts store, and $20+ :-)

I have a 1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria and I had the same problem. Until I found this video today. Awesome tip! Unfortunately my Crown vic was also suffering from a flat battery, so I was not able to move the front seat back, and the Sedan probably has way less space than the trucks do, as it is. Either way, it's the same problem, it's just a bit of a struggle. I wish I had the curving socket extension thing you used, would have made a world of difference. After a lot of struggling, it's now fixed. I've been putting off getting it repaired for over a year and was expecting a $500 bill for a transmission rebuild or something, but it was this simple (only cost me $2.15 for the t30 socket). Next trouble will now be to sort out stalling on idle and I'm rejuvenated by this video that sorted my issue so easily.

Shifter working fine and a lot tighter. Thanks for your helpful video.

I had been worried for awhile thinking i might need a new linkage or something more than two bolts tightened. GREAT STUFF! I just posted this here cause I know how elated you are, it took me 15 minutes and now I am not worried when i park my van. I got out of my van one time to check under the hood while it was running and as soon as my foot left off of the running board and i was two feet on the ground, the van shot backwards at idle speed towards some vehicles in the parking lot (van was actually in reverse when i thought it was in park) i barely made it past the drivers side door that was still open and jumped on to the seat and wheel hanging on. And I had replaced my starter relay because it wouldnt start at times. (all because of two fine thread screws). Have a good one

Just used this video to know what the hell to look for on my 97 F250. Had been loose and had to do neutral to start, just like the video mentioned. Today it decided Drive was the only option, made it home thinking I'd have to tear the dash apart. Watched this, went outside, and sure as hell one bolt was laying on my floorboard. So glad I didn't accidently kick it out or under the seat. Thanks man, you're aces. Still won't do park for some reason, but it's tight and works otherwise. Good enough for a work Truck.

Thank you kindly. I was able to fix my truck in a few minutes after watching this video. It was the exact same bolt that fell out in your truck. I actually felt it hit my shoe right before the problem started. It was at night and I was using a lighter to look for what it was. I thought it was a key that fell off my key chain while I was shifting. Then I was pretty sure that it was a little crystal that fell off of my dashboard and bounced under the seat. Didn't think too much of whatever it was. In the middle of the video when the bolt was shown, I knew.

Excellent video and great diagnostic! I bought an '02 Ranger that had a frozen neutral switch causing the operator to have to force the shifter up or down...this probably loosened up the two bolts you showed here...unbeknownst to me. The dealer who sold me the vehicle repaired/replaced the switch which loosened it up, but it was always sloppy... I adjusted the cable...improved a bit. I adjusted the indicator with the little wheel, and that helped aim the indicator better. I found I had a hard time getting it into 1 and after a few adjustments it worked better, but still was not going into Park properly...seemed as if it wasn't traveling far enough to engage the Park gear properly. I was going to adjust the cable again, but went online and found this video. Upon first seeing it, the bolts seemed to be in all the way...but it's a spring tensioned interface on the bracket, and when I pressed thte bracket, lo and behold, the bolts were out about 4 turns! I tightened them and recovered all the range of movement of the shifter, so Park to 1 was very accurate! I tweaked the indicator wheel to line p the shift indicator and it's great! Tight as new! It seems the shifter would push/pull the cable, and when near the end of range, at Park or 1, the looseness would not allow 100% movement of the transmission lever... Even if it just misses by a degree or so, it may not totally engage Park or 1. I'll be testing it today to see if the cable needs to be moved a notch or two, but I think it'll be ok. It feels better than ever and the neutral switch has a couple of degrees of play if I need to readjust that. DanielJaegerFilms, GREAT WORK!!!

Thank you so freaking much !!! The "bolt" fell on my knee as I was pulling up to work at my office. I was so bummed because I had been putting it off... thinking I would get around to it, and it would cost an arm and a leg. Somehow I got the bright idea to go on KZbin. . . And there you were. Even though I am a former aircraft mechanic, you explained it in such simple laymans terms. Took all of 5 minutes !!! Saved me some pocket change for sure 😄

Outstanding piece of advice, saved me an expensive trip to the shop. I looked for the #30 torx screw on the floor and found it. Thanks Daniel

97' Expedition, same symptoms, checked and both screws were still there but very loose. Tightened them, took 5 minutes and everything works fine now. Thanks.

Sir: I checked my Expedition and found it to be pretty much the same as the Excursion, and both bolts were very loose. I used the #30 Torx and tightened them, no more starting problems. thanks. Thumbs up

THIS WORKS, I had the same problems of my shifter not completely putting the tranny in park and hearing the parking prawl click, also only to be able to start the truck in neutral. I looked under the steering column, it was just like what you showed, two loose bolts. TOOK 5 MIN to fix and SOLVED THE ISSUES. Thank you so much. I was considering that I had a faulty neutral safety switch and was gonna buy and replace it. Try this out!!!

My '95 Crown Vic. That is also my taxi cab all of a sudden was real sloppy in the shifter. Watched you video, looked on the floorboards under the column and there was the bolt ! Thanks a bunch ! Now I need a 3D printer to down load a star driver !

Thank you for your video. Thought the steering column on my Ford E-350 had to be replaced. The situation was getting dangerous. This was a simple fix and saved time and money. Thank you, Ken

Had this issue today the head of one of the bolts sheared off, hit my foot in a Starbucks parking lot, lol, found your video took me a whole 15 minutes to fix after buying new bolts, thanks my friend for the great upload saved me a visit to my local mechanic and I am sure tons of money because they have such a tendency to lie and say these issues are a transmission problem.

I worked on Crown Vics for years and had to replace several of the shift rods after they broke in two. I never saw the bolts come loose . They have the same set up , can’t explain it. Great vid.

You are a lifesaver my friend, thought I was going to have to drop the whole steering column to fix my 2001 F-150. Could not have been easier. Put loctite on the one that fell out, put it back in and put locktie on the one that was still in there (barely). Once again thank you

Thank you very much. My 16 yo son started driving my truck to school and the shifter was getting looser and looser. With the help of your video he was able to easily fix it.

I was at a Starbucks drive-thru and put my 2002 F350 7.3L in neutral, then shut the engine off to order my coffee. When I tried to start the truck again, it wouldn't start or go into Park! Found your video and checked the bolts. Sure enough, they had both backed out 1/2" each! Yikes, hate to see what would have happened if I thought the truck was in Park and watched the 9,500lbs beast roll away downhill! Thanks again for the information to a 5 minute fix!

I just bought an F150 at auction and spent about $1000 less because the truck was advertised with this problem. I figured that I would have to put about $500 in it to fix it but as it turns out, it's FREE! Thank you so much for your video.

I already redid the plastic bushings and it was still getting harder and harder to shift into reverse, with the vehicle slipping in neutral while it was in park... Scary! I thought I was going to have to go in from on top again. You saved me a bunch of work. Many Thanks!!!

Thank you sooooo much. You just saved me $100. I thought it was going to be something really hard to fix and then I said no I bet it is just the linkage and googled loose gearshift and found your awesome video! Than you so much. I am a single woman and have to do these things myself. I was so relieved it was something I could do, I have a ford Windstar but the gearshift was the same as mine. Thanks again!
