For real that is what has scared me to replace my heads on my 3.0 ranger myself. Don't think I could get that right.
@klc3177 жыл бұрын
Nice work. Ive owned quite a few Rangers, only one 3.0 though. Was a good torquey engine but not much HP but they are tough, seems neglect and lack of oil changes got the best of this one. I currently have an '03 4.0 that just recently turned 70k miles and spends a lot of time in the garage, doesn't get driven much but its a great older reliable little truck when we do use it. I've done all the stuff to it, new front hubs, complete brakes all around, shocks, every fluid imaginable, timing chain tensioners, tie rod ends, ball joints, rear axle seals, on and on basic maintenance stuff for something its age and they are just so easy to work on and maintain. The only thing thats really failed on it was a leaking a/c condenser and the one wheel bearing/hub and even those were a piece of cake to swap.

I just swapped the heads on my 2000 3.0 V6 Ranger. It has 180,000 miles. No sludge, crosshatch still on the walls. Mine had 5 out of 6 exhaust valves leaking by, and looking at the heads, the head gasket was leaking a little coolant into cylinders 4 and 6. Runs much better now.

I have the same issue on my 99 3.0 ranger no compression in cylinder 5 I think I got the same issue one of the valves ain’t seating properly or burnt valve the trucks only got 150k on it to u think it’s worth just taking off 1 head and fixing the valves on that head the other passenger side head on my truck has great compression I don’t know if I wanna mess with that one

One thing about the 4.0 and 3.0 OHV engines in the explorer/ranger..I think a ride on mower is harder to service. They were really designed for the average joe to repair and keep for a very long time.
@BrianSmith-lo3mj7 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely 100% correct ... that's why Ford replaced the 4.0 OHV in 2001 with the 4.0 SOHC (A real PITA to work on) and they completely done away with the 3.0 in 2008.
@alb123456727 жыл бұрын
+Brian Smith Yeah the SOHC is a pile of shit and has to come out to repair the chains and tensioners, not if but when they WILL break. Even techs aren't thrilled about the job. Usually the best thing is to scrap the truck. My 96 4.0L Explorer needed $10 of intake gaskets and it runs like new SUV now with perfect idle with 0 fuel trims. Some are reputed to crack heads, but I'm pushing 200K. Very few complaints on that engine. They rarely blow HGs unless you overheat because it is all Iron. The bottom ends of these engines will outlast hell itself. Never heard of any block issues. A brand new set of loaded 4.0 heads is 400 bucks and maybe a day of work with basic tools. Drawback is the OHV engines are supposedly underpowered, but I'm not racing my SUV. I have 4.10 gears and it has very decent acceleration off the line. What did these engines in though are emissions. The 4.0 Never was installed in a car and the 5.0 V8 OHV went into trucks after 96. 3.0 lasted till 08. All the new crap has VVT and tons of problems and $$$.
@BrianSmith-lo3mj7 жыл бұрын
You got that right! All Ford wants to do these days is install these over complicated disposable engines in their vehicles these days that can't be worked on. They're always raving about that new EcoBoost V6 engine with the twin turbos. It might be a good engine, but when something breaks on it and your warranty has run out you're gonna get raped real good. That's why we got the 5.0 Coyote V8 engine in our 2013 F150.
@granthopper57 жыл бұрын
Brian Smith I will agree with you, the SOHC is a pain to work on, but like most other engines, they can live forever if you take care of them. Just turned over 315k in my explorer, however if I ever did it again, I would definitely go for a 5.0 or a Ranger with a 4.0 OHV.
@BrianSmith-lo3mj7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know all about that. If you take care the 2003 and up 4.0 SOHC engine and keep the oil changed in it, it will last forever, but the problem is a lot of people wouldn't keep the oil changed and the plastic timing chain guides would break on them. It's been my experience that most people don't know what PM is and they just drive cars right into the ground.
@justmy2abelincolns2727 жыл бұрын
I own a repair shop in Los Angeles. We see this issue constantly on the 3.0 Rangers, up to 2009 is the last we fixed and it only had 90k miles. We see this issue at least twice to three times a year and that's only considering we don't see as many rangers. Often times there's no code or you'll get a P0316 Misfire Within 1,000 Revolutions. If you're lucky you'll get another code for which cylinder. Either the exhaust valve seats are recessed and often the valve is burnt if the customer has been driving with this condition for 6 months or more (typically the burnt exhaust valve is on combination with a recessed seat). It's became so common that when we get one in here with a misfire, we always make it clear a tune up may not resolve it and we might have to take off the heads. And no, the oil doesn't seem to matter as we've sene it happen to very clean and meticulously maintained rangers. Whenever we see a ranger come in we know it's either a misfire, or if it's auto, it's shifting rough and/or the overdrive light is on. As. Matter of fact, we have one in now getting a new valve body for that issue. 150k miles, 2002 3.0L. Rangers just aren't what they used to be.

Martha Gavez How about the 4 cylinder engines?
@joneser306 жыл бұрын
Martha Gavez Ford knows and didn't recall the heads , the main problem is you need to replace both at the same time and I would suggest ss inserts . If you buy reman or even new Ford parts you will wind up with the same issue down the road. The heads were just trash soft metal. My 03 did it with only 50,000 miles on it and we'll maintained.

Good job, but I till wouldn't be satisfied. The two cylinders in where the valaves were hitting the piston tops is far from average. Now I did norice as you turned the valave you removed from the right cylinder head that the valves face was warped. Heres what I believe happened.The thermostat was stuc or the radiator leaed out all the water and someone ept driving the vehicle to get somewhere. This enormous heat warped that valve face and even the other that hit these piston tops ad iteray fried the oi to cause the sludge you mentioned. The rod bearing and crankshaft bearings and cam bearings are probaby going to have problems next. My analysis as a top long time mechanic is someone kept driving the car when it was hot without water

What actually caused the valve to come in contact with the piston, I would of thought with all that sticky old oil in the lifters, that the cylinder with the bent valve may have had a frozen lifter ? I would have checked and cleaned the push rods too, to make sure that the holes in the push rods were clear, the oil flows from the lifters up through the push rods to the rocker arms. No oil getting to the rocker arms may have contributed to the valve sticking open. It would have been cost effective to replace all the lifters.

Vikturus22 you're technically supposed to put them back in the same location, but I've done dozens of head jobs with no issue putting the rockers and push rods back in any location. the only exception to the rule is lifters, they HAVE to go back to the same location in the lifer bore in relation to the cam lobes, as both the lifter and lobe wear to each other, mixing them will result in eventual destruction of both parts.
