Nativity Lantern and Funky Bow Tutorial!

Hi everyone! Welcome to episode #1 of the 25 videos of Christmas series. Today I am creating a nativity scene in a lantern with 3 funky bows on top. I hope you enjoy this video!!

This is absolutely gorgeous!! Everything about it is just beautiful! I love the nativity and I'm sure you treasure it because your grandmother gave it to you. I love nativity sets and have quite a collection of different ones. I even won one at a friend's shop where I took painting classes. Their shop was selected by Fontanini for a visit by one of the Fontanini brothers from Italy. He could barely speak English but he drew my name!! I was so excited and it is so pretty. The set I won included many unique pieces and he signed each and every piece. At the time it was valued at $500 but I'm told that the pieces increase in value over time especially if signed, but I would never sell it. I have two daughters who can fight over it...but there are plenty of other sets to go around!! My most valued set is made of cardboard and was probably made sometime in the 1940s. My grandmother was a school teacher who taught in a little one room schoolhouse down in the country here in South Carolina. She taught many different grades in that school and in later years rode the school bus when they started transporting students by bus. She used this nativity in her class every Christmas but when I was 10 years old, she gave it to me. It was becoming worn and I think she just didn't want to let it get anymore worn. I am now 63 and I have had it since 1965 so it is now about 78 years old. It is cardboard with the characters printed in color and glued to the cardboard and cut into the shape of the figures. It has the baby Jesus with Mary and Joseph, shepherds and their sheep and even one old goat, and all three Wisemen with their gifts and camels. The manger itself is also cardboard with a roof and a star and a piece across the back has a donkey on it. Each piece fits into a little tab with the description of what goes where. I don't know who did the artwork because she gave it to me in a plain white box but the pieces are so well drawn and colorful. It is a very special set because she gave it to me and she always used it in her classroom to explain the meaning of Christmas. I will always treasure it. I've never seen that technique before. I've always made my bows a different way but love this technique!!

Hi Danielle! Thanks for your sweet welcome to your channel! I look forward to seeing some more of the amazing things you do! I do treasure that cardboard Nativity the most because it did come from my grandmother and though we lost her many years ago at the age of 93, she was a special lady! She was very smart and creative and we usually spent a couple of weeks at her house in the country during the summer with all our cousins. She played the piano beautifully (she taught herself and could play by ear). When our parents came to pick us up we always had to perform for them...either a skit, or a song, or dance. We made costumes out of crepe paper or whatever she could find for us to work with. There was no TV or phone and we would sometimes sit on the back porch and watch the deer come up to the salt lick my Dad had put in the pasture. My grandfather was a wonderful cook and they usually had a garden full of vegetables that we would help pick and he would cook for us. We also picked blackberries for cobblers and they had several peach trees with some of the sweetest fruit on them. We would pick them and eat them right off the tree or he would cut them up and we would have them for breakfast. They had an old Coke machine (it looked more like a small freezer) on the side porch that he kept stocked with the little pony bottles of Coke. If we behaved during the day, he would get us each a Coke and we would sit on the front porch and drink them with him as it was getting dark, then we would run around trying to catch lightening bugs before we had to go wash up before bed. They did have indoor plumbing but they were on well water so we didn't have to take a bath every night. They also had an outhouse that we liked to sneak out to use at night. It was such a wonderful time! I really cherish those memories!! And thank you for reminding me of those times with your Nativity that your grandmother gave to you and the beautiful way you chose to display it!!

Thank you for sharing those wonderful memories with me. My mom has told me stories of her grandparents when she would come to visit them, my great grandfather was a farmer and they grew everything. My great grandma lived to be 102, i loved her dearly. She was a amazing cook and would make the best strawberry shortcakes with fresh picked strawberries from her yard. 💕💖

Hi Danielle!! WOW, wow, wow girlfriend!! First that Nativity set is gorgeous, what a treasure. I LOVE your combination of bows and good for you for tweaking your pattern to accommodate the ribbon that you have in stock. AND pffft, you are a fantastic teacher girl! Three funky bows for this project? Genius!! And way to manipulate that fairy light box up into the top of that lantern; fantastic! It really does create one of those "ahhhhhh" moments. LOVE that!! Danielle, that is gorgeous. Along with Julie, Arlynn and Kim, you are doing a wonderful job promoting the funky bow. I think you did a wonderful job with your tutorial. WOW, is right! Even though it is Easter week (and truly my favorite holiday, though I do love to decorate for Christmas, my kids and grandsons are now grown, so we don't do a lot of presents anymore. We have a great dinner and family time.) I was happy I found THIS you tube on how to make the bows. Arlynn's I'm coming to your site, next! Danielle I saw part of your Nativity scene in another video, and was DETERMINED I was going to find me a lantern, come you know what or high water!. Well 2 wks ago I did. I found it for 50% off and it is HUGE. Almost 3ft tall, but my Nativity pieces are big, so it worked out. 2 of the glass pieces were broken so HL gave me a extra amt off, then sent me back to the back and re cut all the glass pieces. Out of the one of the ones that was broken, the guy even cut me one for the bottom so I stick stuff to it and remove it if I want to change it out. I'm excited to learn to make the bows. I made the Easter bunnies Candles, so at this rate I can't watch from now to Memorial Day or I'll be broke before we go on vaca. lol But THANK YOU! Your so talented and your video's have given me a renewed interest in decorating my house again, pretty for every season. Already have my fairly lights for the inside top. NOW, I just have to decide what I'm going to do with all my other lanterns. 2 are shorter, not to wide and a Verdigris green and black. I'm sure you've seen them in HL. I was thrilled to fine we have a Kirkland's here to. 3 in fact! 1 not far from me. woo hoo. I can say this with all honesty, at the way I'm going, I'm am spending my kids inheritance and having a ball doing it~:) NOW, I just have to master those bows and will put the lantern with my Nativity pieces either on the hearth or on a half bookcase next to the fireplace in Den, with the other pieces around it. I will figure out somethin'. Thanks again, Danielle, and as always, THUMBS UP!

I love the technique you're using for your bows! It's very original and simple. The overall concept of using a lantern for the nativity scene literally blew my mind - it's awesome!!! If I can find a nice and large enough lantern, I'll definitely use it. Please allow me to comment on the bows... I find the top too bulky. Personally, I'd create a subtle cascading in the back, softly draping the sides at the top, till where the glass starts, so as not to obscure any of the scene inside. You are so welcome. I was also going to tell you because you made mention in some of your other videos about bows that there is a bow maker you can get at Hobby Lobby. It's called Ez bow maker. It's a board that has pegs and it helps hold the bow. It comes with a book to show you how to make all kinds of bows. If you go look for one make sure you go to the Christmas ribbon because at Christmas time they sale one listed as Christmas and it is Cheeper and you get the 40-50% discount. I believe it reg price $9.99. I love Arlynns bows but I have a hard time holding on to them and this thing makes it so much easier.

Oh my dear Danielle, this is so exquisite. Absolutely breath taking. The ribbons are as BEAUTIFUL as any I have seen. The colors complement the nativity colors, the lantern is white and pure, and simple. I can't think of one thing that would make it any more stunning than it is. Ad the light effect Is perfect. I can tell you put a lot of heart and soul into it. You made your grandma proud. This is so elegant beyond words. I love love it. This would REALLY be expensive to buy. Love ya Debbie from NC.
