In this video I take a look at the GivEnergy GivBack battery saving sessions scheme which helps the ESO (Electricity System Operator) run the DFS (Demand Flexibility Service) this winter. I take a look at how much you might get paid, how it works and how to apply.

Many thanks for the excellent video. I thought this was some sort of con to start with but it is clearly a no brainer to join up. So I have done just that straight after watching your video. We will await an event!!!!

No Export MPAN needed now. So way more people are eligble

Just so your aware, octopus now allow export to be paid under savingsessions. This makes it equal/better than givenenergy.

is octopus savingsessions not allowed at the same time as this then?

@@gk3092 It isn't. They're both participating in the DFS I guess it depends on what you want too ie: cold hard cash vs credits instead

Worked for me, earn’t £6.19 from 2.93kwh, less £1.03 to top up my battery so nett £5.16 fine by me

As a retired couple that uses everything (& more) that our battery can store with an overnight charge & top up during the day with low winter generation, I see no benefit in signing up to this service. If I had more storage (which I am looking at doing) then it may be worth considering. However, with only a 3.6kW inverter we can only charge / discharge at a fairly low rate which if not managed properly means increased usage of grid power during the day. All things considered not for us.

You'd be paid significantly more for this than it would cost you to import later in the evening. £2 vs 30p per unit. It's not a lot of money in total though - I don't think it would justify buying a bigger battery just for this.

@@robinbennett5994 Yes I would agree. I need more battery storage in order to increase our daily off grid run time & coup with the extra load of a future Air to Air heat pump which will at some point will replace my gas CH - well that's the plan anyway. Today we started out with a full 9.5kWh battery after charging it & the car overnight on our 9p Go tariff. With a little bit of solar during the day by 5pm we are at 30% battery which will be barely enough to get us through to 8pm after evening meals etc. I may also need to consider a tariff change to access a longer off peak time period for charging up 19kWh of battery & an empty 64kWh car battery. 4 hrs of off peak Go tariff is not long enough. The only snag is that this is all so terribly expensive so I have to be realistic about what can be done.

It should work for you too, you will be paid £2 for each kWh that will cost you about 30p to charge during the day. Personally I use Octopus and earn £2.25, and last week £4 per kwh !!

@@peterjones6322 It's worth pointing out that the last couple of saving sessions (at down here in the south east) have paid £4 per kWh - 13 times more than it would cost to re-charge the battery at peak rate.
