Daniel excitedly yelling "I'm gonna piss off my neighbours so much" is such a mood. Though now I'm sad that I'm not one of his neighbours, because just imagine you're like making a sandwich or something, and then out of nowhere, you faintly hear the unmistakable sound of bagpipes through the wall.

I'm from cologne, germany, and I can only agree on Highland Cathedral. One of the most famous bands of Cologne's folk music, Bläck Fööss, wrote lyrics to Highland cathedral and called it Du (bes die Stadt), which is one of their most famous songs.

Hahaha, in my high school, cos it was a scottish one, we were all mandated to do a massive parrade once a year, like, in straight up military-style uniform (think a bunch of teenagers wearing dress uniform marching in sync like an actual military parade), and I was in the band. Not as a bagpiper, but I was the snare.

Earlier this week I was doing an exercise where I was asked to name 5 people I admire - and Daniel Thrasher was on that list. I don't just love his content, I really admire how he takes creative risks and follows his passion to do whatever he wants, regardless of views or attention. I have never seen him hop on any trend for views, ever. And the result may not be for everybody, but for those of us that love it we REALLY love it and it means so much. Daniel, in case you read this, you're an inspiration.

Wow, its awesome how the sound can still come out while you're taking a breath because you're squeezing it. It's kind of like circular breathing. Also didn't know bagpipes have reeds. I'm a bassoonist and am happy to have you join the double reed family.
@joshuakroll32032 жыл бұрын
The circular breathing thing is definitely what led to the bagpipe's development, and iirc, the most primitive form of bagpipe could be considered the bladderpipe, which has just a little bag between one's mouth and the chanter. Usually, they don't have any drones.
@moulderutes79422 жыл бұрын
Modern day pipes, not sure about super old ones. All have a check valve (called flapper) and the end of the blow pipe. That way instead of circular breathing using your cheeks as the buffer you use the bag.
@joshuakroll32032 жыл бұрын
@@moulderutes7942 Yeah, the older highland pipes, as well as many modern day pipes of non Scottish origin actually don't necessarily have that kind of check valve that prevents air from coming out of the bag through the blowpipe into the user's mouth, so to my understanding, it would be the common practice for those pipers to use the end of their tongue to close the blowpipe as they take a breath.

It somehow never occurred to me until now that the bag is filled with air beforehand so you can squeeze it while playing to sustain those notes. I thought bagpipers just had inhumanly large lung capacity and were exhaling the entire time.
@amandajoy89472 жыл бұрын
I follow a piper on IG and the number of people she gets commenting how she "never breathes" because she isn't obvious about it and the bag is the one blowing the pipes is actually kind of horrible hahah! :)

I'm Scottish and I have never seen anyone more excited over bagpipes but the national anthem of Scotland is 'Flower of Scotland' not 'Scotland the Brave'. 'Scotland the Brave' is just a classic bagpipes tune.

I've got to pick up a violin again. I think the problem with violin and really string instruments of that nature are that with instruments like a piano or even a guitar, if they are in tune the note will sound good, even if played by an inexperienced player, but with something like a violin, so much of whether it sounds good depends on technique, not the instrument itself. that's why whenever I hear most really young children who just started play, i sounds like a squeaky nightmare with maybe a hint of a clean sound in between each stroke. but even I can pluck a guitar string and make a pretty sound. so the longer I wait to pick it back up, the more fear I have that I'll never be able to do it how I did before.

Fun fact: The Irish national bagpipe (the uilleann pipes, or "pipes of the elbow") uses a small bellows under the dominant-handed arm to inflate the bag rather than a mouthpiece. In addition to making it much easier to keep the bag inflated, this also ensures that the air flowing over the reeds is relatively dry, which helps maintain tuning over time. They're also quieter than a Highland bagpipe, so they won't necessarily blow your eardrums out from playing in enclosed spaces.
