I hope you guys liked this one! I really want to focus on my storytelling and visuals this year, so let me know if you prefer this style of content. :) (Also, just a couple of things that I forgot to mention in the video: (1) The den is mechanically ventilated and complete darkness is proven to be best for sleep hygiene. (2) My desk location keeps my back from facing the door with blackout curtains for glare. (3) Our master bedroom feels empty now! I don’t know what to do with it. Any clever ideas?)

Perhaps you could switch your bedroom and studio around? We made our bedroom in the smallest room in our apartment. We have a small closet in there for bed linens, underwear, and used-but-not-dirty clothes, while the rest of our clothes are kept in a larger closet in a larger room, which we use as our studio/hobby/guest room. No need to have a large bedroom if 99% of the time spent there is in bed. Better for sleep hygiene to not use your bedroom for other activities too.

I love the underlying principles of this video. I've always wished that interior design focused more on rearranging, DIY-ing, or re-using things you already own instead of going out and spending thousands of $$$ on new furniture to fix "problems." It's wiser, more eco-friendly, and simply more realistic for most of us watching. Also, great solution to the problem! I suspect a lot of the people commenting with criticism don't spend a lot of time around kids. She's just going to wake up in the morning and immediately run to her parents' room, and then spend most of the day dragging her toys out of the toy closet and all over the house - toddlers don't exactly spend a lot of time playing quietly in their own rooms alone. And all of the toddlers I've met would jump at the chance to have a cozy little space like that ... kids love having "mini" versions of adult things. As long as it's well-ventilated she'll probably be very happy there until she's older.

In the past I have often complained about the poor designs of modern British homes (usually lack of storage, walls and space in general), but recently I’ve been counting my blessings. At least I have a home which is waterproof and well insulated. So many young people today either cannot afford a home, or they are forced to live in dreadful mouldy, infested conditions; or raise a family in a dingy hotel room miles away from friends and school. It’s a sad indictment on our society that we cannot even meet the basic pre-requisites for people to thrive. You are right to count your blessings. 😇

I think the switcharoos here make a lot of sense. However, it really shows how new apartment units in North America (especially of the 2, 3 bedroom, and larger type) would benefit from allowing more single-stair multi-unit buildings. The one wall of windows usually required by two sets of egress stairs in case of fire makes it difficult to fit windows and ventilation to every room and space. In single-stair building with beefed-up fire standards, a similarly large apartment could likely provide windows into both the little den/bedroom, the kitchen, or even one or both of the bathrooms.

If you think about it, other than ventilation, which can be done in other ways, no one needs a window in a bedroom. You're there to sleep, and sleep does not need light. Even more so for a young child who is likely to be going to bed before it gets dark and will need blackout curtains on the window so the light doesn't keep her awake. She also has full access to the rest of the flat if she wants a different space with a window.

It seems obvious to not kick the human out of the room with a window, but instead move your office into the den? It's also closer to the social spaces you use in the evening, when she's asleep. Since the den feels dark already, you might wanna lean even further into the moody aesthetic, maybe with dark wallpaper on the ceiling or with flowy fabric to make it feel like a tent. And possibly swapping the door out with one that has a window if the low light feels like an issue. And of course a bunch of indirect lighting to cosy up the space rather than one overhead source, what little kid doesn't like fairy lights anyway!

Which is usually not a good thing. Windows in bedrooms so if there's a fire at night it can be used as escape. That was pushed big time when I was growing up. Even in high rise apartments, that's what ladder trucks were for. Has that changed? Also, the den would make a better office since it is the smaller room anyway. And dens usually were used as office space traditionally. Idk. The windowless kids room is bothering me for not allowing escape. Had a friend die in a fire because her room was a basement room and she had no window. Had to try and make her way to the stairs to go up to the main floor and get out. She barely made it to the stairs before she was overcome.

Why sacrifice the pantry-weren’t the kitchen cabinets available? I’m sorry, I’m not one to write hateful comments, I’m just exaggerating to make a point. I can tell you’re a fantastic parent, and I’m not here to tell you how to live, but the idea seems a bit off to me. I personally wouldn’t love a windowless bedroom, even if it was just for sleeping. If she only uses her room to sleep, maybe keeping her in her original bedroom with a big girl bed could have worked? That way, you could still use it as an office during the day. You could also use good artificial lighting to turn the den into a studio, and it might even work better without the fluctuating natural light. With your skills as an architect, I’m sure you can make the den work beautifully. You’re awesome, just my opinion that this wasn’t your best idea!

I would imagine that your resistance to putting your daughter in that room was due to it not being a true bedroom, as most building codes and practice would suggest - no egress window. I don't see that as a "big deal" as she is not likely to be home alone if a situation were to occur that might require that sort of exiting of the premises. I think it's a win.

I think it would have made more sense for you to move into the den and put your daughters toys into her bedroom if all you need is a separate working space. Your daughter probably needs more space than you do. Because of this I didn't even watch the video all the way through and I'm just very surprised because it makes it seem as though you are only thinking of yourself

When she's older sure. But her den is near the living area, so I can totally see why she'd prefer to be there so she can be near mum and dad. He himself also said that she likes the new smaller room because it's more cozy.

@@DoughnyI agree. For now, I think it's the better solution. The daughter gets a small, cozy room and the dad gets an office/ studio. After a few years, if / when the daughter wants a bigger room or they have a bigger income, they want a yard so they can have dogs, etc then they can reconfigure their apartment or change homes, whichever suits their needs. They can even join "House Hunters" or "Love it or List it". 😅

You better check your city regulations, often, if there are no windows, it’s illegal to make a bedroom. That’s why, when sold, they sell as 2 rooms + office

I like the idea of moving things around, but it does feel strange to me you didn't switch the rooms the other way around... Your daughter in the bigger room als she will grow and need more space. Your studio used to live in a corner of your bedroom, the den will suit as well I guess? Also. You have a beautiful view now and your kid had no windows. But the saddest part: you will close the curtains when filming during sunny weather because light would be to hard for filming video's. So the lack of windows in the den would have been less of an bad thing for you than for your kid. And I understand what you are saying. Most of the time she still sits with you guys but in a couple of years, less than you think, she will have friends come over and they will play with her toys in her bedroom. No longer in the living room. Specially cause you live in an appartment, not a home. You have a flat living area so she will play in there faster compared to when she would have to go upstairs. But if you don't mind swapping again in a few years, that is ok ofcourse. Happy for you you can have an easier workflow now..

No natural light. A much smaller cramped room that she still has to grow in. No separation between play and rest space (which is part of the predicament you were in initially). Like the rest of the comments, I'm sure this was all with good intention but I can't really see how this is benefical to her. Feel like a more suitable first step would be to have moved the office into the bedroom and towork from there during the day since you do say it goes unused most of the time and you can always pick up your laptop and move during the evenings

Sorry, but how come that this is a good design decision, especially from the perspective of an architect? No natural light, no fresh air… hope that you will not keep the kid in this environment for long. You probably will argue that she will spend there just the night, but why you don’t move there and let the kid sleep with her mum? I like your videos, but being myself an architect I don’t think that the decision was the right one. Sorry(again)!
