I just got my first tattoo kit a few days ago ^-^ I already have 4 pieces of work. But 2 I'm a bit proud of. I need help, how much does it eventually cose to do the apprenticeship. My family is very poor and live in the middle of nowhere so I wanted to take my 14 years of drawing and art experience to tattooing which is something I've wanted to do for awhile because my other dreams cost too much really, and hopefully pursue this one to the fullest. I just turned 21, and I wanted to start as early as possible because my mom is terminally ill and I want to be able to help out.

I'm amazed at how clean your practice skin is! haha! There are times I can't see any of my lines because of how bad the ink stains the skin. I've tried priming the skin with green soap and vaseline before practicing, but I can't wipe the excess ink away without making a huge mess of things. I do use Vaseline to wipe with. I haven't tried more expensive skin yet- so no Pound of Flesh or ReelSkin. I do practice on CPR dummies that I have which is a similar material to the fake skin, but it's way easier to wipe excess ink away. I can actually see my lines! You're magical! haha! I'm using the Yuelong skin that you're using here. Maybe I got a bad batch? Thank you for this video! You've taught me a lot :)
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
Haha when I first got some fake skins I remember that I had a smudging problem too. It really all depends on the skin we are using. Rubber felt skins typically are super tough to work with because of the smudging. Do you know which skin you selected upon checking out from the Yuelong Amazon Page? We have silicone which are great for keeping clean but difficult and tough to tattoo. Every skin is different and I feel we should try to expand our pallet a bit and test out different skins. All of the skins on the market can teach us a lot. Should you ever have any questions at all don’t hesitate to reach out to me and let me know. I will do my best to assist you in the best possible direction. 🤝
@LucidFrameProduction3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielYuck Thank you for replying :) I re-checked my order and the description of the skins says it's latex- but it's definitely not latex. I'm also an SFX makeup artist who uses latex all the time, so I'm very familiar with how it feels. This skin is very thin, tough, not flexible- I get zero stretch out of it, and it feels more like rubber than latex or silicone. I also have to put another skin under the one I'm tattooing or my needles go through to the table even when I'm being very gentle. I know my needle depth is good because I've done outlines in my own skin and haven't blown out any lines. I made sure to get it from the Yeulong store on Amazon to avoid knockoffs. I did get a small frame of skin from Pound of Flesh. The stretch is awesome on that skin, but it's a struggle to get ink into it. If I were to go from that into human skin without ever being in skin before, I'd be blowing out lines all over the place...haha! I mean, it's good skin, but damn! Even getting a good solid outline is difficult. I can say that the Yeulong skin takes ink easier than POF. I'll still use my Yeulong skinflaps for outline practice, but I just can't for shading. Like I said- I can't wipe the ink away enough to see my progress. I appreciate you, good sir :)

@@LucidFrameProduction I know exactly what you mean! I’m grateful that I started on the think Yuelong fake skin flaps ahaha because I developed and worked into a soft hand. Don’t get me wrong we are all prone to blowouts, anytime we put a needle into skin we are prone to blowouts however there is so much we can do to do our absolute best to prevent blowouts as much as possible. Now I feel more comfortable so when I use thicker skin I’m not totally against it anymore however if we are just learning I would always recommend think skins. Furthermore I’ve noticed fluctuations in the skins I get from pretty much every vendor. Reelskin are nice and consistent but from what I’ve used rather thick although someone has mentioned we can get different thicknesses. The Yuelong skins are my go to still just because they do what I need them to do, but they are very hard to work shading into. I feel what this issue is is the way they are made. I think it could be something with the ratios with ingredients used to make the skin. The formula could fluctuate a bit depending on whom makes the batch, what ingredients were used , etc. I really feel this is where the fluctuations come into play. I would have to see the skin so I can tell you if it’s a rubber or silicone felt. I got a batch that doesn’t accept 3rl haha but accepts shaders and bigger liners like no tomorrow. One thing I’ve learned from my experiences that every fake skin has different things to offer. 1 fake skin will teach us liking better over another. 1 fake skin will teach us shading over another. 1 fake skin will teach us this and you get by drift. Since they are all made different they all have something to offer and I really feel there is not 1 skin to rule them all at the moment haha. Thank you for your support and feedback 🤝
@LucidFrameProduction3 жыл бұрын
@@DanielYuck I agree- every skin is good for something. I can say that practicing on CPR dummies has been very educational. I make horror dollies and friends give me dolls and stuff to make into zombies and whatnot. A friend gave me 3 CPR dummies to zombify and I've been using one of them to practice in. I can say that after practicing on a human-shaped dummy I never wanna tattoo ribs on a real human...haha! Their skin is tough, but it takes ink well- even for shading. Plus it gives good practice stenciling and tattooing on a human form. I can also wipe the ink away to see my progress. But, so far, there's just nothing like real human skin. It's a damn luxury after tattooing fake thingies! My name is Tricia, by the way. I sincerely do appreciate you for your videos and for responding to people. You're awesome :)
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
@@LucidFrameProduction thats way too cool! If the opportunity ever presented itself I would love to tattoo something like that as well haha. That’s way too cool. This dawns the idea of me getting some fake limbs and practicing on limbs. For me personally I love to work on human skin, there truly isn’t anything like it. I feel like tattooing skin is easier in my hand over tattooing fake skin as human skin is softer and for me personally easier to work with. The natural con-caves of the human body never stopped me from applying a good line haha. I’m certainly faced with tasks upon tattooing such as figuring out how I am going to place myself to pull this line correctly, or how deep this dermis area is. I work my way naturally around my tattoos on a human. Not being able to stretch on fake skin or tattooing on a flat surface never had a negative impact on my tattooing, but this may vary from person to person. So being able to tattoo dummies of such can be a genuine blessing for those whom are looking to develop their workflow and process in that area. To mimic the actual process is awesome in my opinion. I genuinely appreciate you, your support and feedback Tricia! It’s means a lot to me 🤝 Should you ever have any questions at all don’t hesitate to reach out to me, I will always do my best to assist you in the best possible direction.

Not a tattoo artist nor do I plan on ever being a tattoo artist. I've gotten a lot of ink. 1 think I like about whip shading is it looks better as it ages and it blurs out and looks like grey wash shading. Obviously gray wash shading looks cleaner on a fresh tattoo but doesn't age as well as solid black shading techniques

Hi! I don't know if you reply to comments on older videos, but so far your content has been incredibly helpful, so I'm already subscribed! I have a question: Is it normal to have to pass the needle so many times to achieve the shading? Or is it because of the fake skin that it takes so many passes? Thanks in advance!
@DanielYuck5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your time and support! I appreciate you. This is a great question I feel. So when it comes to fake skin we will certainly have to work harder to shade, which means more passes. Not all fake skins are like this but the ones that do require more work, I would say just to work them as needed. This will translate to softer fake skins that require less passes, we will also work those as needed.

Hi, I have a simple question that's been hard to answer... Is stippling (dotwork), whip shading, and pepper shading different from each other? Or are they just different synonyms for the same technique? I mean, does the term vary the effects or the hand movements? I've found several conflicting views on the matter and am even more confused now. Thank you in advance!
@audreywhite55562 жыл бұрын
I'm a little confused...I thought you had to go deep enough to lay solid black like you do with lining in order for the ink to stay? Or does the shading just manage to stay by doing it that lightly on the surface of the skin somehow?
@audreywhite55562 жыл бұрын
That was a little confusing so what I mean is it looks like youre laying the color really gently on the uppermost layer of the skin but I thought ink fell out if you dont go to the dermis?

Thank you so much for your video it really helped me understand the techniques I was having such a hard time before! I was just wondering what you are using to wipe away the excess ink?? Tips on getting your grip so ... big without using 5 rolls of adhesive tape🙈🤨?
@HagarenoBoyo2 жыл бұрын
heey Daniel, thank you so much for such detailed explaination! I have a question though. My cheyenne hawk thunder can range from 5 to 12 volt. I Have seen and read people use 3 to 5 volts for pepper shading as well, but as I understand from your video, 5 volt is good as well? and I'm a beginner and don't have bugpins needles. Can normal needles 3RL achieve the same effect? thanks in advance!

Is it good to use the shading needle as a liner I did it a try on my sister friend I like but I’m still learning it was a small tattoo
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question! I feel it really all depends on the technique and technicality the tattooist at hand provides. Round Shaders can be used to line and me personally I love to line with round shaders especially on my mandala style tattoos. Round magnums can be used to line but requires a specific approach. If I may, What type of needle were you using specific?

Thank you so much Daniel! I’m just beginning my apprenticeship and you are helping me excel! Do you have any tips for putting stencils on the fake skin? I’m told that it just won’t work and not to try and put one on….
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your support and feedback it means a lot to me! Congratulations on your apprenticeship! You will do great ! Putting stencils on fake skin can be super super tricky. For me, It really depends on the felt we are using. Some felts of fake skins require different treatments and changes a bit in the process. Rubber felt skins are typically quicker to dry but harder to work with because they smudge like no tomorrow. Silicone felts are good but require more time to sit and rest so the stencil sticks to the skin. In this video I talk more about what I’ve mentioned and I show you how I go about applying stencils to fake skins m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5nEfqSwhshmoZo Let me know if you have any questions at all.

would you rather use this technique with traditional or portrait? or would it be good for both ?
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
That is a great question! I can't say this technique would be good for this , or best for that because we can all use this technique as we see fit. It can possibly work well for both of those style should you need to have this approach. We can also combine different shading techniques in 1 tattoo. I personally do not feel that there are rules but more so our own guidelines to follow. I always encourage myself to try new configurations and new ways of tattooing just to see what I like and what I don't like.

oh so, im guessing stippling and shading this way would hurt less versus if you were to get a black out or thicker shade
@liviousyoung49112 жыл бұрын
So is the skin heat sensitive? Is that why the black stencil fades so you can see the actual tattoo gun working?
@Dark_night87298 ай бұрын
Is the skin you use hard to get shading into? As I use the same methode nice and light and the skin I used ( reelskin) took the ink so much better almost like human skin would. Just wondering if it was my issue or just the fake skin you use

Hey Daniel! I loved your video and the way you explain the technics! I have a question but is more related to the machine you're using. Would you recommend getting one CNC-Q2? I'm learning tattoo and this machine is in the range of "cheap" pen machines, so I really consider getting one, but I couln't find many reviews about this machine. I would really appreciate your word!

Thank you for your kind feedback and support! It means a lot to me. That’s a great question! I actually made a full review on the cnc-Q2 and that video I will link it below for you. CNC Q2 Tattoo Short Pen Review kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHTZgImVbK2Lp5o In my opinion I personally love the Q2 and is one of my go to tattoo machines. I will be switching the cam out for a 4mm stroke for lining. I think you’ll love the Q2. If you have any questions upon watching the video don’t hesitate to reach out and I will do my best to assist you in the best possible direction 🤝

I am a learning artist and just had a few questions. 1. Why use a 9 round shading needle instead of 9 round lining needle for outline? Does this work the same for real skin as well? 2. What is the difference between a bugpin 3rl and a standard 3rl? What do each look like?
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
Great questions! I use a round shader typically when I am wanting to achieve a bolder line. The round shaders have a larger grouping spread which results in the line being bolder. In a nutshell the differences between Bugpin and standard is the grouping sizes. The bugpins have a tighter needle grouping over the standard. I will be shedding more light on this soon.

Thank you so much for this video mate! I found it really useful !!! 🙌 Just two questions: 1) For whip shading, did you use diluted ink or pure black? 2) Could you please explain to me the difference between a Bugpin 1003RL and a normal 1003RL? The gauge is the same, and the needlles are all 3 Long Tape! I thought the Bugpins were the normal #08 RL LT needles but I found there were also the #08 RL LT Bugpin needles Aaaaahhhhhh! They drive me crazy! 😱😱😱🤣 Nobody can explain to me what a bugpin is ... Please! Thank you ✌️
@DanielYuck3 жыл бұрын
For all of the shading techniques I used in this video I used straight black ink. I will bring a review soon on the ink I use on my end. Also those are great questions! So to my understanding bugpin signifies a tighter needle grouping. So we have our standard needle grouping size which is referred to as #12. We have bugpin which is referred to as #10. So if we have a #10-03RL That’s a bugpin 3 round liner. If we have a #12-03RL that’s a round standard 3 round liner. What changes within these needles is groupings of the needle point. Bugpin will always have a tighter needle grouping of standard sizes. I would consider #08 bugpin as well because of the super tight needle groupings. I’m not certain if there is a specific term for #08 or any gauge under #10. To my understanding it’s referred to as bugpin. Don’t quote me on that tho. Lol

It all refers to the diameter of the single needles that make up the configuration. #12 are standard needles size (.35mm), #10 (.30mm), and #08 (.25mm). The reason they, #s 10 and 08, are called bugpins is because the sizes are used by bug collectors to mount the bodies to the boards they are displayed upon. You can have super tight configurations with 12s, it's how the needles are soldered on the bar that determines if it's tight or loose. The longer the solder is towards the tips the tighter the grouping will be. When artists want a looser grouping to get certain effects they put a flame on the solder to melt it some so the needles spread out some. When I started, apprentices were expected to learn needle making among other old-school things.

It’s kinda like 3d shapes, you have to picture where the light is hitting and where the dark spots will be, if you take a close look at materials like leather brick and all other kinds you will get the general idea of where to shade

does the fake skin retain ink the same as real skin? Or do you have to layer the ink more/less than you would on a person?
