10 years later he is arguably the most sought after pianist of his generation. Sometimes the winner of the prestigious piano competition does not take it all. I will have a pleasure to see and hear his recital performance in Chicago on March 1. He permanently lives in NYC now and gives more performances in US.

exactly. too many pianists prepare like robots for these international competitions. I know far too many "career competitors" who take part in competitions after competitions, and win many prizes (often first), yet can't get management or engagements. DT is such a great artist with an immense individuality, and he was noticed at this competition,, which is far more valuable than the first prize.

I keep coming back to these performances by Trifonov at the Chopin competition -- this concerto, the scherzos, the mazurkas, the andante spianato/grande polonaise brilliante, the Op. 10/25 etudes -- and I've come to grips with the fact he finished third because this was a competition, where judges are required to nitpick things like wrong notes. Nothing wrong with that -- it's a competition -- but judged purely on musicality, I think we're seeing why he's easily had the most successful career to date out of the competitors from 2010. To me he was the clear standout.

I played one in a showroom - with the extra Bass notes - I felt like I was sitting at a Jet console - the Piano was so powerful, and beautiful - I couldn't think what to play… truly intimidating.

The way Trifonov‘s playing melted with the orchestra- indescribable! I feel he truly serves music, and does not try to rely on „show effects“. In my opinion Chopin‘s spirit comes through loud and clear in this rendition, the whole interpretation breathes with the composers presence… What I think about competitions: they may be in a certain degree helpful to boost the careers of young pianists, but in the end, it is the audience, who chooses their „true winners“. These are the artists, who are sought after still today, when the laurels of any competition are forgotten… It is very difficult to argue about taste, and who wins at a competition is always the result of the subjective taste and opinion of a panel of judges, while the public will not always agree. This is why I believe that in the end, the eternal spark of beauty, of masterful playing, that touches us, the public, in some pianists renditions- such as with Trifonov- define the ones, who have won the hearts of the listeners and are therefore unsuperable in their own uniqueness.

What a jaundiced and ugly view. Often in competitions the “best” player may not win because prizes are really the result of compromise by many judges of various tastes! One or two judges may not have liked the extraordinary speed or some judges may have a prejudice within themselves! Rarely/never are competitions of this stature swayed by dishonest judging! There’s too much publicity, too many tremendous names on the jury and the audiences aren’t idiots. It’s not as if he was surpassed by a Pole! Yulianna is also Russian. Often the great concert pianists have an interpretation or idiosyncrasy that just rubs a strict, by the book type of judge the wrong way. He’s had a much bigger international career than Blechacz or Yullianna.
