The Danes have a lot of habits and traditions regarding the Christmas
holidays. Danes in all different ages tell about their traditions with
decorating the Christmas tree, what their Christmas dinner exist of,
how they spend the 24.th of december, the days after and what their
favourite tradition at Christmas is.

Estella Edwards religion is one thing, christmas and other religios holiday are another thing. Most Danes consider religion being something private, not to be talked about. Christmas is very very big, and for most people its not to be touched. Christmas is for most people a familytradition. Christmas starts late november all through to the christmas days are over late december. Its celebrated at kindergarden, all the way op to old peoples home - christmas parties, dinner with family and friends. I personally dont celebrate christmas as I dont believe that Jesus was born in december, nor is he God, but the only son of God. Most people here know that already, but still they celebrate it like its the ,ast one they'll ever have. Tradition is more important than the real facts of christmas.

Estella Edwads Jul = Christmas is by far the most important celebration in Denmark. Like Thanksgiving in USA, I guess. Most of the traditions around JUL dates back to before Jesus, anyway. So I, as an Atheist and tax-paying member of the christian Danish Lutheran State Church, has no problem in celebrating Jul. The 24.th of december is the only day of the year, where all churches around Denmark are full of people, out of tradition, not deep religious feelings! We meet in the family in the darkest time of year, to eat and drink of last years crop, to show, that we trust in the returning of the sun and growth in the new year. The wheel( hjul! ) of nature, if you will. Lol.
