I wonder why Germany has so different names in different languages : german: Deutschland, french: Allemangne, english: Germany, danish: Tyskland... Why ?

Germany is the english form for "Germania", a roman province. Tysk is cognate with Deutsch, as well as the word Teuto (Teutonic = german). Allemagne is because germany was comprised of several tribes and somewhere in history they forged alliances and became known as "all men", allemagne. Also, the word Dutch is simply another word for Deutsch :-)

A word of warning for anyone learning Danish and Swedish. They are the same in many ways but in others they are not. Slik in Danish is NOT slick in Swedish. That’s something else and the less said about it the better =)
